The music of Ottorino Respighi, which the Conserva-tory Orchestra will be performing on the November 3 concert, has long fired my imagination. I first became familiar with his music when I was 11 years old shortly after a trip to Europe. I had the luck of seeing a group of archaeologists in England uncovering part of an an-cient Roman road. Later when I listened to my parents’ recording of Respighi’s Pines of Rome, particularly the final movement titled Pines of the Appian Way---which depicts Roman sol-diers returning on the road home to Rome after a victorious battle---I had a very clear picture in my mind of legions of soldiers on that road appearing out of the mists of an ancient time long past.
Now here I am decades later helping stu-dents get ready to perform

The Right Time for KairosHere at SOGO, we are so excited for the world renowned Kairos String Quartet to come to Olympia and perform in our November concert. Kairos, loosely translated as the right time, is comprised of violin-
ists Carrie Rehkopf and Denise Dillenbeck, violist Tim Betts, and cellist John Michel.
The Kairos String Quartet is recognized as one of the premier chamber ensembles in the Pacific Northwest. The quartet holds an en-dowed residency at Central
Washington University—where all four members also teach—affording the group a degree of stability that is unusual in the chamber music world. (cont’d on p.3)
Kairos String Quartet
I know that I speak for the entire Conservatory Orchestra when I express the excitement generated by having the Kairos String Quartet from Central Washington University join us for our opening concert of the 2013-2014 Season. We have sent them some of our gradu-ates in the past and now we will get a chance to see why those students universally praise their professors and progress so well. One can feel the dynamism Kairos produces as a quartet and the individual inspiration they personify.

Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No. 2, a work based on 17th century lute pieces. Again I find my mind evoking images of ladies and gentlemen of some aristocratic court of the High Renaissance, wearing the heavily ornate brocade
fabric fashionable at the time, and dancing to
this wonderful mu-sic. Still fires the imagination!

Who Will You Thank When You Win Your Nobel Prize? When Nobel Prize winner Thomas Sudhof was asked about his most influential teacher, he replied:
Thomas Sudhof is a professor at the Stanford School of Medicine. He is the co-awardee of the 2013 Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology for his work on molecular and cellular physiology.
My bassoon teacher, Herbert Tauscher, who taught me that the only way to do something right is to practice and listen and practice and listen, hours, and hours, and hours.

In addition to traditional concert performances, Kairos is committed to educational outreach and to performing in unlikely venues in which they seek to break down the
barriers be-tween audience and perform-ers.
Kairos pro-vides a 10-day, intensive sum-mer institute,
named the Kairos Lyceum, for advanced high school and college-aged string players from around the Pacific North-west. During the course, Kairos Quartet members men-tor a number of ensembles as they take up rewarding, yet challenging, masterworks of the string quartet repertoire.
Students focus on the technical issues of musical perfor-mance—things like pitch, rhythmic “groove,” beauty of tone, and expressive and inspired interpretation— while learning how to work together, as four individuals with diverse personalities, in a small group.
“A string quartet is a democ-racy,” said Kairos violist Tim Betts. “Part of the perfor-mance is the intensity of the interpersonal relationships required to make the music happen.”

Kairos String Quartet rehearses with SOGO musicians
Maestro Welsh, cont’d
Our program begins with the Overture to Prince Igor, the opera, by the Russian composer Alexander Boro-din. After that we will be treated to a concerto by Louis Spohr with the Kairos String Quartet. Our program ends with the Ancient Airs and Dance Suite No. 2 by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi.
The Overture to Prince Igor tells the story of a Russian ruler who goes off to war despite the bad omen of a solar eclipse. While he and his sons are held prisoner, his son Vladimir falls in love and eventually marries his enemy’s daughter. Igor escapes and returns home to the sounds of rejoicing townspeople.
There are only a handful of concertos for string quartet and orchestra. Most of them are contemporary, late 20th century works. We found one from the mid-19th century by composer Louis Spohr. Spohr was a violinist and knew the medium quite well.
Now that our rehearsals have begun it has been quite revealing to hear the piece performed with such under-standing. One of the phenomenon about the Kairos String Quartet that interests me so much and why I think they will be such a good influence on our stu-dents is their expressive and outgoing music making.
Ancient Airs is an incredible work that personifies the brilliant orchestration for which Respighi is so famous. This is just the work that Kai-ros can help move our music making to another level. So, I asked them to participate in our rehearsals and performance. Kairos will be sitting with our principal string players! And they will be commenting and demonstrating during rehearsals. They were quick to remind me that they usually only visit an organization a couple of times. We are so grateful.
I am looking so forward to this performance. What a way to kick off our 2013-2014 Season!
“I’m not a fan of Spohr, so I was reticent when I heard we would be playing one of his pieces. But I absolutely loved it when I heard the quartet rehearsing. And then when you add our orchestra it sounds so lush and full.”
