THURSDAY NOV. 16 7:00 PM
California TypewriterUnited States/France/ India/Canada 2016, 103 min
California Typewriter is a documentary portrait of artists, writers, and collectors who remain steadfastly loyal to the typewriter as a tool and muse, featuring Tom Hanks, John Mayer, David McCullough, Sam Shepard, and others.
It also movingly documents the struggles of California Typewriter, one of the last remaining repair shops in America dedicated to keeping the aging machines
clicking. In the process, the film delivers a thought-provoking meditation on the changing dynamic between humans and machines. By looking at our own relationship with technology, old and new, California Typewriter asks whether digital age’s emphasis on speed and convenience is more for our benefit, or for the machines.

Manson: The Voice of Madness
Canada 2017, 104 min
Canadian Premiere. Charles Manson continues to be a beacon of public fascination. How could a no-account drifter and ex-con become a charismatic leader of a diabolical murder cult, one that aimed to start a race war based on the music of The Beatles?
Narrated by Rob Zombie, Manson: The Voice Of Madness is an explosive documentary that will forever change the conversation about Manson and the notorious “Manson Family” murders. Director James Day spent a year interviewing Manson and tracking down members of the so-called Manson Family, many who have been in hiding since the early seventies. These compelling new interviews reveal the true story and motives behind the grisly
murder spree – a story that hasn’t been heard until now.

Mansfield 66/67United States/United Kingdom 2017, 84 min
In the 1950s and 60s, Jayne Mansfield helped define the term “bombshell” as an actress, Playboy playmate, nightclub singer. Mansfield 66/67 looks at the last two years of her life and untimely death, and asks: Could the death of this
all-American movie goddess really have been caused by a curse after her alleged romantic dalliance with Anton LaVey, head of the Church of Satan?
This is a true story, based on rumour and hearsay, directed by P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes, and told by cult icons like Kenneth Anger, John Waters, Mamie Van Doren, Tippi Hedren and many more. Tragic, mythic and larger-than-life, it’s ultimately a celebration of a true American original.

The Power of GloveUnited States 2017, 65 min
Canadian Premiere. IT’S SO BAD. The Power of Glove is a documentary that chronicles the history and legacy of the Power Glove, a Nintendo controller that promised to forever change the way human-kind interacted with technology. Originally released by Mattel,
the Power Glove was the first mass-marketed, gesture-based video game controller, and the hype was immense.
It didn’t work out. Gamers were disappointed by the Power Glove, and critics panned it as a worthless gimmick. But the Power Glove has not been simply swept under the rug. Over two decades after its release, the Power Glove continues to resonate with video gaming and technology fans, becoming the focus of art pieces, songs, videos, hacking projects, and other forms of cultural repurposing.

ShadowmanUnited States 2017, 83 min
Before Banksy, there was Hambleton. In the 1980s, Richard Hambleton was the Shadowman, a specter in the night who painted hundreds of startling silhouettes on the walls of lower Manhattan. Along with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, he helped sparked the street art movement, until drug addiction and homelessness sent him spinning out of the art scene.
Shadowman plunges the viewer into the chaotic life of a forgotten artist, from early fame as a painter and denizen of the Lower East Side, through his struggles with heroin, to his surprising comeback. As street art exploded into one of the most popular and lucrative art movements in the world, Hambleton is given one more chance to step out of the shadows.

The JudgeUnited States/Palestine 2017, 82 min
When young lawyer Kholoud Al-Faqih walked into the office of Palestine’s Chief Justice and announced she wanted to join the bench, he laughed at her. But just a few years later, Kholoud would prove him wrong.
The Judge provides rare insight into Shari’a law, an often misunder-stood legal framework for Muslims, told through the courageous journey of the first female judge to be appointed to the Middle East’s religious courts. In the
process, the film illuminates some of the universal conflicts in the domestic life of Palestine – custody of children, divorce, abuse – while offering an unvarnished look at life for women under Shari’a law.
