¶ The architecture of Ofis Architects is attractive because of its insightful, humorous and provocative solutions. This is exactly the reason why their buildings are a favourite topic for relevant and irrelevant critics and occasional commentators of architecture. Their photogenic architecture, which is memo rable, equally delights accidental passersby, tourists inte re sted in architecture, as well as the editors of various ma gazines and books, who often use it for the cover pages of their publications.

concepts, arousing great interest both at home and all over Europe. Differently than in the City Museum in Lju bljana, where Ofis Architects in a similar way attempted to affirm continuous curved surfaces as the guiding theme, the sta di um was completed in accordance with the idea of the com petition entry in 1998, won together by Špela Videčnik, Katja Žlajpah, Rok Oman and Aleš Žnidaršič. ¶ The buildings of Ofis Architects are attractive because of simply understan dable architectural gags, humorous ideas, with which generic volumes are equipped. On the residential blocks in Izola, loggias are stuck like hives in different colours. The historical mass of the villa in Bled drowns at the foot of the hills, a version of the American ‘Glass House’ concept. The residential block in Cerklje na Gorenjskem is covered with ‘folksy’ wooden crosses. With their neat architectural implants, Ofis’s architec

ture creates a kind of mixture, which arouses a desire among the most fanatical traditionalists to invest in contemporary architecture at home. ¶ Neither does the stadium in Maribor lack architectural gags. The transparent ring turns its lights on during evening football matches, like an orbital space vessel parked on a hardly big enough platform, somewhere on the intersection point of the 46th parallel and 15th meridian. Since architects in Slovenia, with rare exceptions, prefer safe, more easily controlled polyhedron geometric forms, at first sight it seems that the double glazed curve is something entirely new. However, Ofis architects established themselves back at the end of 1990s with their concept of connected curved surfaces that flow parallel one above another, when they won the competition for the stadium in Maribor and the competition for the City Museum of Ljubljana. The connecting tract of the museum was conceived as a sequence of five arches which, like ramps for automobiles, connect the divided floors of the old palace. In the case of the stadium, there are two parallel arches, the roof and the ring of stands, which bridge over the generic base with public programmes. ¶ The stadium does not hide its ambition to denote a place in the future, even further than just a few generations. On the other hand, it does not deny spatial continuity. The curve of the new roof is overbuilt geometry of the concrete arch above the old stands, which were designed by architect Boris Pipan during the 1960s. The widely praised architecture of the 60s in this case serves as

zanimanje.

a donor of genetic material, used for designing a new, more complex and advanced hybrid. The stadium in Ljudski Vrt (People’s Garden) is an example of the way in which a proactive treatment of architectural heritage stimulates development of remarkable and functional new architecture. Without restraints and false respect, the new architecture of the stadium selfreliantly meets with the old, not touching it in the process. Together, they create an irreplaceable entirety. ¶ Ljudski Vrt has become even more ‘people’s’ since the stadium was built. This new design of the sports park opened the surroundings of the sports arena towards the town in the form of a huge public space in its centre. In Ljudski Vrt, they in fact only did some additional building on the old football field, and yet the stadium represents a great new architecture. Regardless of the used architectural concept, the primary significance refers to the public building intended for numerous users. The ring of the stands, already during the construction works, attracted the attention of football fans, but also of those who have a quite low opinion of football. The photo documentation of the construction of the ring, which was regularly up da ted on the web pages of FC Maribor, is extremely detailed, as if construction supervisors were the ones who were doing it. ¶ To what extent intelligently, humorously and interestingly designed public buildings can produce enthusiasm among pe ople for contemporary architecture, we were able to see

recently in Ljubljana in the example of the building of Chamber of Commerce (SVA, 1999). On the occasion of the opening ceremony, the new stadium offered an impor tant football match between local clubs and thus drew a mass of people who filled the stadium to capacity. If we observe the stadium’s opening as a unique architectural event, it should be, to tell the truth, admitted that the audience there was probably mo re numerous than total number of all visitors at architectural symposiums, exhibitions and awards cere mo nies in the whole of Slovenia. The renovated Ljudski Vrt there fore took hold as the town’s icon in a moment, which symbolizes the historical continuity of sports culture, architecture and innovativeness in Maribor.
