the Club. This award was present-ed at our September picnic and alt-hough he was unable to be present to accept, he had been informed of this honor prior to the day. Thank you Jim for the many Club positions you have held and your loyal support and service to the In-dianapolis Ski Club for so many years. Jim and Vicki have recently moved to Maryland, but we hope to still see them around at times.

View from the Sky Mel Crichton, (retiring) SchussBoomer editor

I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t excited about the coming ski season. Like a little kid just before Christmas, my mind is full of wondrous images and thoughts of skiing deep powder snow through sun-blessed glades. And, like all little kids, I hope that Santa comes through this year and doesn’t leave us a lump of coal like last year. Santa, in this case, is La Nina … the little girl…. And a weak La Nina (aka La Nina Lite) is expected this winter. Here is the official winter forecast map from NOAA and a link to the website. Our Big Sky home, as well as other nor-therly ski locations, might just get more snow than last year. Let’s hope your ski season is blessed, too.

It’s with some sadness, and also a ton of “whoopee!” that I turn over the reins of editing the Boomer. I’ve been hacking this for 12 years, and nobody, not even Mitch McConnell, should hold a ‘non-career” job that long. Unlike many of us in the club, our new editor Drew Reed is young, meaning he’s still work-ing. So cut him some slack, as editing this rag is NOT the only thing he has to do. Please bear with Drew as he learns the ropes. He’s so enthused about it, though, that he asked to edit this issue himself, before I trek back to Montana, so I said “sure, why not?” (I ain’t dumb as I look.) I hope all the contribu-tors got their material to him well ahead of time, and I hope they will do so in the future.

BUT...don’t start cheering too soon. To quote Glen Campbell in True Grit, “I ain’t dead yet!” There will be occasional “Views from the Sky” to help Drew fill gaps in issues. And you can help him as well by taking LOTS of photos on ski trips, on bike rides, at Thursday Thirsts and at other club affairs. And PLEASE shrink those massive photos to about 100K in size BEFORE you mail them to him.

It’s been a memorable and often fun dozen years, but change can be good. A lot of change buys a cup of coffee (but not at Vail Resorts, you need the green stuff).

Thinking snow… and glad I bought new powder skis last summer.

Group Ski Trips and other Funny Experiences

by Priscilla Johnson and Ann Daniel

When joining a ski trip set up by the Indianapolis Ski Club, you become an active, participating member of the GROUP. The Ski Club assigns a leader to collect the money, assign the rooms, dispense necessary information about the travel arrangements, coordi-nate with the vice president of trips and the tour operator, and facilitate any emergency situations that may occur on the trip. The hotel or con-do complex will usually have assistance at the front desk for sugges-tions of restaurants and activities in the area. This may be the first time the trip leader has been to this resort also. The leader has contact with our tour operator who can assist in ar-rangements, should they be necessary, if injury or other circumstances happen to necessitate the participant’s early return to Indy. IF you en-counter a problem, please contact the trip leader immediately. In this situation, the tour operator can usually get a refund on remain-ing days of lift tickets, so unused tickets should be given to the trip leader, with any paperwork from the clinic so that refunds can be made. On your trip application, you may indicate preferred roommates. How-ever please pay attention to the number per condo indicated if your group is larger than what is specified. We try to accommodate requests, however sometimes you will find yourself rooming with people you do not know well. Please COMMUNICATE within the housing group about food situations, cleanliness, and group expenses (if any) and make sure that all are in agreement. Respect each other’s need for space and pri-vacy as much as possible.

Ski Club Bike Riders by Ray Battey

We are nearing the end of a very rewarding and fun 2016 season of biking. About 25 rides so far for about 500 total miles. Over a series of rides, we covered the 62 mile Cardinal Greenway from Muncie to Richmond. We also biked the Monon, White River Trail, and Tow Path, as well as a good part of the ex-tensive bike trail network in Carmel

and Fishers. Looking forward to next year, we will consider doing a destination trip, to the Katy Trail in Missouri. Thanks to all of our riders this year and I look forward to starting up again in April 2017.

Charity Golfers Compare Scores by Ray Battey

Four Rounds of golf were purchased at our Christmas dinner last year with the proceeds going to our Indy Ski Club charities. Kristy Williams, John Oberlies, Randy Ridgway and Mike Rees pur-chased the certificate good for four free rounds of golf at Hillcrest CC. Mike couldn’t make the outing and I played in his place. Our charity funds support various causes including the food bank of St. Vincent de Paul, Indiana Blind School skiers, and Special Olym-pics skiers. Everyone had a great time on a beautiful day for golf. We will auction off another four-round certificate at this year’s Christmas dinner so be ready to participate.
