Dear Lord,

There is no greater feeling of liberation

than to experience this freedom from sin

and death that you have provided for me

through Jesus Christ. Today my heart and

my soul are free to praise you. For this, I

am very thankful.

On this Independence Day, I am reminded of all those who

have sacrificed for my freedom, following the example of

your Son, Jesus Christ. Let me not take my freedom, both

physical and spiritual, for granted. May I always remember

that a very high price was paid for my freedom. My free-

dom cost others their very lives.

Lord, today, bless those who have served and those who are

serving and continue to give their lives for my freedom.

With favor and bounty meet their needs and watch over

their families. In Jesus name we pray. AMEN!

Mercy This Week

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Last Sunday, Jesus rebuked James and John for

wanting to “call down fire from heaven” (Luke 9:54–

55) on an unwelcoming town. As he sends forth disci-

ples today, Jesus again forbids retaliation against non-

receptive listeners (10:10–11), showing us how to be

Jesus’ “missionaries of mercy” this Jubilee Year of

Mercy. Like the first disciples, we are sent not to pro-

claim ourselves but Jesus. As Jesus sent them in pairs,

so are we also to work together in the community of the

Church. We often describe the Church as Isaiah de-

scribes Jerusalem in today’s first reading, our comfort-

ing, nurturing Mother (Isaiah 66:13). So, going forth

gently, like lambs among wolves (Luke 10:3), we share

comforting peace, nurturing food and drink (Luke’s

image for Eucharist), and Jesus’ healing promise of un-

failing, unconditional mercy (10:5, 7, 9). Thus Jesus

bids us proclaim the kingdom of God by showing what

God’s kingdom looks like in action. “Go, preach the

Gospel,” Pope Francis’ saintly namesake of Assisi is

said to have instructed his first friars, “and when neces-

sary, use words!”

Keeping God in All We Do

IN THIS YEAR OF MERCY

Visit THE IMPRISONED Prison populations have grown 700% since 1970.

A discussion on prison costs, lengthy incarceration for non-violent crimes and the effectiveness or

ineffectiveness of our prison system to reform offenders might not be appropriate here.

But Matthew 25 is appropriate. The Gospel is quoted so often that it has become almost trite.

When did we see you hungry or naked or in prison? Whatever you did for one of these least ones

of mine you did for me. (See Matthew 25:37-40.)

During the Jubilee Year of Mercy, our parish is reflecting on and acting on the Works of Mercy.

In July, we focus our attention on “Visit the Imprisoned.”

Mercy does not sidestep accountability for one’s actions,

justice and the need for a safe society. Justice and mercy

come from the same Christ, and so we reach out to those

who need reform, friendship and forgiveness.

Pope Francis visited a Philadelphia prison last summer and

said that Jesus “teaches us to see the world through His

eyes — eyes which are not scandalized by the dust picked

up along the way.” The pope called for creating “new op-

portunities for inmates, for their families, for

correctional authorities and for society as a whole.”

Take note: For Jesus, visiting the imprisoned is as critical

as providing food and clothing to those in need. Pope

Francis invites us to learn to make space in hearts for peo-

ple in prison. If we visit a prisoner literally or if we “visit”

by working for system reform or praying for someone, we

cannot forget those thousands whom society has set aside.

Unbound There are lots of ways to be impris-oned. Everyone experiences some measure of “unfreedom” because of our finite human condition.

God’s mercy opens a path to free-dom from sin and to the joy of the fullness of the Reign of God.

That’s why our mercy to each other is so important. Being merciful builds the Reign of God here on Earth.

The Coffee House next week on July 10 features Patti Bliss, a St. James parishioner who will talk about her experience with Unbound, a Catholic organization that works all over the world to free children and elderly people from a life of poverty.

Criminal Justice Ministry

The Pastoral Care, Criminal Justice Ministry

(CJM) for the Archdiocese of San Antonio recruits,

screens, and trains volunteers from parishes

throughout the archdiocese to minister to the incar-

cerated and those formerly incarcerated and their

families. In order to serve this special population,

this ministry works directly with our parishes and

offers formation and on-going education to help

people understand the needs of those being served.

As Catholics, we are called to social ministry and

must act with justice, love tenderly, serve one an-

other, and walk humbly with God. Through a part-

nership with the Chrysalis Ministry, the Pastoral

Care, Criminal Ministry is able to offer a wide va-

riety of religious and social services with the Fam-

ily Renewal Center to those formerly incarcerated

in any detention or treatment facility. These ser-

vices are provided in order to facilitate the spiri-

tual, emotional and personal transformation of in-

carcerated individuals.
