COMOX VALLEY — Hornby Island Community School will be featured in a video for the provincial association of community schools.
The video is expected to be shot later this month and will showcase Hornby as an example of 21st century learning best practices. Janey Talbot, president of ACEbc (Association for Community Education in BC), says the fact that it’s a small rural school played a part in the choice.
“I think that’s a really important part of community schools. Community schools ourish in urban settings but they also ourish really well, and sometimes even more naturally, in really rural settings,” said Talbot, adding the school’s emphasis on 21st century learning or personalized learning was a big reason, too. “There’s a really good example of that (kind of learning) happening in the school where volunteers are coming from the community and working along with certi ed teachers teaching in the classroom kind of thing so that was clearly one of the reasons that we chose to go there.”
Hornby vice-principal Gracie
MacDonald says the school did a community visioning process over the past few years in response to low enrolment numbers.
“And where we have moved to is place-based learning, theme-based learning and really trying to use the resources
of the community in the school,” said MacDonald. “So, connecting kids with the types of things that they’re passionate about.”
The kindergarten to Grade 7 school has fewer than 40 students and is open four days per week. While MacDonald
notes morning classes look fairly traditional with kids working on subjects like math, science, English and social studies, each day features special activities.
“Every day, usually in the afternoon, people (from the community) come in and we work
together with them to do art projects, science projects, environmental, biology experiments, that sort of thing everyday,” she said, adding even the traditional morning lessons are connected to what students do in the afternoons.
“So, for example, we’re doing some
chemistry with a local fellow who’s a chemistry expert, but we’re learning sort of the — I guess the more paper-based lesson takes place in the morning and then the actual fun experiments are taking place in the afternoon.”
A few other examples include:
a biologist teaching students about salmon life-cycles, a professional badminton player teaching students the sport and artists teaching kids art.
“One of the best things about Hornby is it’s creative people wholive there, and why not use that resource to really enrich the curriculum as much as we could for the kids?” said MacDonald.
Although MacDonald said it’s hard to provide statistics showing exactly how well the learning model is working so far, she points out that these students performed justas well or better than the rest of the kids in the school district during the yearly Foundation Skills Assessments.
Also, “we’ve had two homeschooling families decide to send their children to school in the last few months,” she adds. “I think that’s a sign of the success, is they’re thinking, ‘Hmm, let’s try this out.’”

email: [email protected] With the opening of the Halibut season the shing has been good in certain areas and anglers have caught their limit, while others have yet to get a hit. Dan Fear from Sayward has been following the anglers since 2006 and said that the tides were strong and water was rough last week. A number of boats were concentrating their efforts at Kelsey Bay.A number of sh have been caught in the 50 to 70 pound range and some have gotten sh while shing the right tide. For salmon a number of local guides have been out and catching sh anywhere from 12 to 19 pounds around the Lighthouse and the Hump. Prawning has been very good in the Campbell River area and usually in the month of April sherman are getting their limit. Helen Dzuris from Campbell River has been shing for Salmon since the early 60’s and has landed a sh that anyone would be proud of. Each year a heavy sh will come in and the sh can come in when
you least expect it. Fishing from Discovery pier will start to pick up in a couple of weeks.
Last week Echo lake was stocked with trout and this week should be an ideal time to get out and catch some pan size trout. This lake can have some fun times shing from shore using power bait or shing the west end in late
evening. Maple Lake in the
Cumberland area will start to sh well using black leech y patterns. Spider Lake can produce some nice size trout and is a favorite shallow lake shed this time of year.

The Black Creek Community Association (BCCA) is celebrating its 55th year as being the hub of Black Creek for recreational programs and special events.
As the Centre is owned by members of the BCCA, and the BCCA is a not-for-pro t organization, the facility can always use lots of hands to tackle maintenance duties. Join members and staff Saturday, April 20th, from 9:00am – noon, to help tidy up and celebrate Earth Day. Maintenance tasks include gardening, power washing (thanks
to Pilon Tool Rentals), wallpaper removal, staining and painting, organizing storage, cleaning windows, repairing fences and the playground, and more – there is a task for everyone of every age.
The beautiful Centre is located at 2001 Black Creek Road in Black Creek. Look for the new highway sign across from Endall Road. Please bring gloves, pruning shears, muscles, energy and any other helpful gear. The coffee will be on and lunch and refreshments will be provided, followed by an Earth Day Cake. Pitch in to clean up our community.

Part Two: Last month I wrote
about colon cancer, the number two cancer killer in Canada.
The number one killer is lung cancer, making up 27 per cent of all deaths due to cancer: breast and prostate cancer are number three and number four.
If I were to ask the average person what they are doing to prevent cancer, ie. lung, breast or prostate cancer the standard answer would include eating a healthy diet, exercising and avoiding lifestyles that include smoking and drinking too much alcohol. Yet we know that these lifestyle habits are not enough to prevent many cancers because our food is not pure and is often de cient in many nutrients and because our bodies are bombarded with environmental toxins that stress the detoxi cation pathways. By knowing what pathways in the body you are trying to support you can be proactive in preventing cancer no matter what type. Here is how!
The following ve mechanisms are the targets for naturopathic medicine in prevention and treatment of cancers in general.
■ Restoring the off-switch “apoptosis program.” This process is powered by the mitochondria or the energy producer of the cancer cells and can throw on the “apoptosis program switch”. Vitamin D, Vitamin A, EPA, DHA, curcumin, garlic, quercitin, green tea, I3C, Vitamin E, selenium and glutathione to name a few are required for this pathway.
■ Interfering with angiogensis or the blood supply to cancer cells. The primary compound is vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF): Nutrients that decrease
VEGF include: Vitamin D, Vitamin A, green tea, EPA and DHA.
■ Control invasion: MMP’s are enzymes which digest connective tissue and allow invasion of the cancer cell. Agents that inhibits MMP’s include: curcumin, green tea, quercitin, EPA essential fats, Vitamin A and Vitamin C to name a few.
■ Preventing metasis of cancer cells: Vitamin D, Vitamin A, bromelain, EPA, DHA, modi ed citrus pectin
■ Controlling in ammation CRP and IGF1 : vitamin D, Vitamin A, EPA, DHA, Other agents include boswellia, quercitin, curcumin, EPA, DHA, green tea, proanthocyanadins and garlic.
Vitamin D helps with all ve of the mechanisms that lead to cancer formation. This is why I think every Canadian should know their 25(OH) vitamin D level.
It is not enough to just take vitamin D because many supplements don’t provide the dosage that is on the label and some forms are better absorbed than others.
It is a fat soluble vitamin so if there are digestive weaknesses then this vitamin may not be properly absorbed. According to Stats Canada March 24, 2010, one third of all Canadians have vitamin D levels below 50nmol/l which is considered de cient. Levels of 75nmol/l are adequate and levels at 150nmol/L are preventive for cancer and chronic diseases including Alzheimer’s disease.
Essential fatty acids EPA and DHA also prevent all ve of the above mechanisms. The question is always about what is the source, is it puri ed of dioxins, PCB’s, and mercury and what is the dosing of the EPA and DHA. I recommend 3,000 mg total per day and this is found in one tablespoon of Carlson’s sh oil or one tsp per day of our Cytomatrix sh oil. Both are very pleasant to take.
Probiotics will enhance the immune system in the gut and also reduce the growth of H. pylori. H. pylori induces angiogenesis via several pathways. This is why taking probiotics reduces cancer risk in general and intestinal cancers
speci cally. B complex is
important as they support many different enzyme functions in the body including detoxi cation pathways. Helping the body rid itself of numerous toxins will lower the cancer risk in general.
Food sources are generally lacking in B vitamins. Knowing that most humans have at least six carcinogenic toxins in their body no matter what the age makes cleansing programs highly recommended for adults on a regular basis.
Mitochondrial support: Mitochondria are the energy power houses of each cell in our body with about
1,000 per cell. They are a key player in the apoptosis process: the off switch for bad cells. Nutrients that support the mitochrondria include antioxidants
such as CoQ10, quercitin, L-carnitine, B complex and Vitamin E.
In the April 1, 2013 Time magazine there was a great article “The Conspiracy to
End Cancer.” It talked about
epigenetics and controlling the environment of the genes to prevent their expression. This is going to be the future of preventing and treating cancers. There are many nutritional remedies that have been researched to do this also.
Dr. Ingrid Pincott, naturopathic physician, has been practicing since 1985, and can be reached at 250-286-3655 or www.DrPincott.com.

A change in the property assess-

to result in a 2012 tax revenue loss
to Campbell River in the range of
$1.8 million, City Manager Andy
Laidlaw said Tuesday.
If that loss was transferred
directly to residential taxpayers,
they would be required to pay 12
per cent more in property tax this
year, Laidlaw estimates.
But Campbell River Mayor Wal-
ter Jakeway is determined there
will be no property tax hikes for
homeowners this year.
In an interview prior to the
Catalyst notification from the BC

said: “My personal intention is to
have a zero per cent tax increase

and I’m sure I can bring a few

without having to cut services too
badly.”The BCAA announced Tues-
day that the equipment removal
at the former Catalyst Elk Falls
pulp and paper mill means it
no longer meets the legislative
requirements for a major indus-

of approximately $45 million dol-

I often have patients tell me they’re surprised to learn that dentists can be trained and licensed to deliver Botox injections.
Many people, it seems, are still under the misconception that only plastic surgeons provide Botox.
When you think about it, it makes perfect sense for many reasons that dentists are also licensed to provide this treatment. Canadian dentists have been using Botox for medical purposes
for more than a decade, and those of us in B.C. have been allowed to prescribe it cosmetically since 2007.
Though some plastic surgeons were against it at the time, it was an obvious decision.
Botox, to explain it in the most basic terms, is a simple injection that blocks a muscle from
contracting. When injected into facial or neck muscles, the result is a smoother, more relaxed skin appearance and a
reversal of visible signs of aging.
Botox injection requires a profound knowledge of the head and neck anatomy, and dentists are obviously highly trained
in this regard; they
are intimately familiar with the muscles, blood vessels and nerves in the head, neck and face.
When you also consider that dentists spend a great deal of the day honing their pain-free injection delivery, they seem like a naturally wise choice when considering an appropriate health care provider to administer Botox.
Special training and certi cation are required in order for your dentist to become
a Botox provider, so be sure to ask if yours is certi ed.
Dentistry and smile enhancement have long been at the forefront of esthetic health care; Botox is just one more esthetic service that your dentist can offer you.
Dr. Cory Seebach, DMD, is owner of Beyond Beautiful Smiles in Campbell River. To learn more, call 250-923-4746 or visit www.beyondbeautifulsmiles.ca.

PORT ALICE—Education paid off nicely for a group of young students when Sea View School hosted its Young Entrepreneurs Show April 5.
Students in grades 3 to 9 designed and produced unique and creative individual products, made business plans, and did marketing research after training through the PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs. PowerPlay is a hands-on educational program, purchased for Sea View School by Neucel Specialty Cellulose, that complements many aspects of the school’s
curriculum such as nancial planning, career planning, and public speaking.
Their products were then displayed and sold at the Young Entrepreneur Show, with ten per cent of product pro ts going to charitable organizations.
Prior to the Entrepreneurs Show, eight Sea View students participated in The Cougar’s Den, the school’s version of the popular TV show, The Dragon’s Den. Each student presented his/her business plan and products to a panel of ve judges — Warren Beatty representing Neucel
Specialty Cellulose; Scott Benwell and Tanya Carlson from School District 85; local school board
representative Carol Prescott, and Natalie Stewart, Sea View School’s PAC president.
After “pitching” to the Cougars, students answered questions about their products and business plans. The judges then faced the dif cult task of determining three winners based on a set of criteria. Two runners up, Taylor Spafford and Anna Romphf, both in Grade 3, received $25 to go towards their businesses, while rst place went to Dawson Hudock, Grade 4, who received $50 and a Young Entrepreneur trophy.
These students had very different and unique products. Romphf developed cat grass because her cat likes to nibble
houseplants. The cat grass provides a healthy alternative for cats since many houseplants can be toxic to pets. Spafford made original earrings to ll the void of limited jewelry availability in Port Alice. On a recent vacation in Cuba, Hudock saw creative uses for aluminum can tops.
He turned these often-discarded scraps of metal into original bracelets and chokers. He also made candy apples.
Other products produced by the young entrepreneurs included bookmarks, driftwood candle holders,
greeting cards, jewelry, sea shell candle holders, pet treats, cat toys, and food items, toname a few.
Turnout for the Young Entrepreneurs Show was high. Many students sold out of their products, while others began taking orders.
Staff and students at Sea View thanked the judges for giving so generously of their time to support the students.
Special thanks went to Prescott, who gave each of the eight “Cougar’s Den” participants $10 as “seed money” to go toward their businesses.
