As I dentist, I know not to take it personally when patients avoid coming in for their checkups. I’ll even concede that maybe – just maybe – our friendly six-month reminders are slightly cringe-inducing, like fi ngernails down a blackboard.

Regular dental visits, however, are about more than just a bright smile.

They’re about maintaining good oral

hygiene and overall health. Typically, a checkup consists of x-rays, scaling, polishing, a fl uoride

treatment and an exam by the dentist. During the oral exam, we’re looking for any abnormalities such as cancer, gum disease, cavities or other indicators of poor health in general.

Dental x-rays in particular provide information that can be impossible to ascertain otherwise. X-rays show us any

tooth decay, bone loss due to gum disease, impacted teeth, abscesses, cysts and even tumours in the jaw bones.

The level of radiation is very low – less per fi lm, in fact, than the exposure you’d experience on an airplane fl ight.

Scaling involves using tools to remove tartar, a hard deposit that harbours bacteria.

Brushing alone won’t eliminate it, and if it’s left unchecked it can lead to decay and periodontal (gum) disease, which has a whole host of nasty symptoms (think

infl amed gums, loose teeth and really bad breath).

Polishing gets your teeth feeling smooth, allows the hygienist a chance to review home care tips and prepares your teeth for fl uoride.

The fl uoride itself coats your teeth and accumulates in soft areas, where it works

to harden the enamel. This treatment both protects your teeth and helps reduce sensitivity.

Remember, preventative maintenance is the least expensive dental treatment there is, and routine maintenance can avert larger issues in the future.

In the long run, it will save you time, money and discomfort.

I have been getting more questions about the book “End of Illness” by Dr. Agus so I have put together a few key

points to consider in retort to some of his recommendations.

● I agree that infl ammation is the cause of many illnesses

but there are many natural remedies and lifestyles to adopt to reduce infl ammation in the body rather than just taking aspirin.

A meta analysis of fi ve studies showed that long term aspirin usage increases the relative risk of hemorrhagic stroke

(stroke caused by a burst blood vessel) by about 40% and the risk of major gastrointestinal bleeding by 70 per cent.

Small GI bleeds can occur over a long period of time and the only symptom might be fatigue that goes undiagnosed until an anemia is discovered. Lifestyle change to lower infl ammation include eating an anti-infl ammatory diet; (this is a diet low in anything white, the nightshade foods, low in red meat and wheat), exercising regularly, taking

vitamin D and purifi ed fi sh oil.

● I disagree that taking supplements is not required in this day and age.

Back in the Victorian era, (during the 19 Century) people ate a clean un-processed diet rich in phytonutrients. After

accounting for a higher mortality rate until age of fi ve, they lived as long as we do now and chronic disease was rare.

These people were

well until they died suddenly usually from an overwhelming infection.

They did not linger

on for 10 years dying of chronic diseases as we do today. There was no mechanization and no pollution. They ate twice as much as we do now because they did everything by hand and needed the calories.

They were not overweight. (“An unsuitable and degraded diet?” Part 1-3 by Dr. Paul Clayton and Dr. Judith Rowbotham, Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine 2008, issue 101). In the era of today, our food is adulterated and contains fewer nutrients, our environment is toxic so much so that we all have at least seven toxins in our blood, including cord blood.

These include BPA and mercury. I believe that a lot of cancers we are seeing today are due to this toxicity level and in order to promote detoxifi cation pathways in the body we need to provide the body with key nutrients such as B complex, methylating agents and liver support.

● I disagree that our society is not defi cient in Vitamin D.

There are many researchers, including Dr. Clayton, and Dr. William B Grant, that are studying the effects of low vitamin D serum levels in higher latitudes and its defi ciency associated with diseases such as cancer, autoimmune disease, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Vitamin D is a much more natural way to prevent infl uenza every year than taking the fl u shot and at the same time prevents many other diseases too!

A trial on school children in Japan showed that 1200IU’s of vitamin D per day (the same amount found in one tbsp of cod liver oil) reduced the risk of type A infl uenza by 64 per cent .

● Take statins

after the age of 50. In the book “Overdosed America” Dr. Abramson outlines the true benefi ts of statin drugs and they are certainly not effective for primary prevention of cardiovascular events which means if you haven’t had a heart attack already it will not prevent you from having one.

It is particularly not studied at all for women for primary prevention of heart attacks.

Taking EPA and DHA rich fi sh oils daily in adequate doses are well known to be cardio protective.

● Prevent the fl u by having the fl u shot. I would say up to half of my patients take the fl u shot and have no side effects and it works for them at preventing the fl u.

However, as in all

aspects of medicine, it does not work for the other half of my patients.

It often causes the fl u after they receive the injection, or in every year that they get the injection they get the worse fl u ever or they had side effects from the injection.

In my practice I recommend a three pronged approach to preventing the fl u: probiotics, adequate fi sh oil and vitamin D consumption and a homeopathic protocol that is followed every fl u season.

This works well and these patients just don’t get sick with the fl u

● I do agree that sitting is bad for our health and recommend that people wear pedometers to keep track of how many steps they take in a day, trying to aim for 10,000 steps per day.

Getting a dog is good for your health in more ways than one!

Eating at regular times, getting to bed at a regular time and getting enough rest are basic foundations of health.

I also agree with choosing a multicolored diet and using wireless headphones if you must a cell phone.

On my website are articles I have written in retort to some of the research Dr. Agus refers to in his book.

Consider these basics keys to health if you want to make your health last with optimal vim, vigour and vitality!

QUINSAM HOTEL

PROCESS

This summer, the Comox Valley Yacht Club is again planning a trip to the Broughton Archipelago at the northern tip of Vancouver Island.

This is an exciting cruise for members as they take their boats through some of the most challenging waters and see some of the most dramatic scenery on this coast. And along the way are orcas, sea lions and dolphins to add to the excitement.

Leaving Comox harbour, the yacht club members will cross the Strait of Georgia and head north through Desolation Sound.

The grandeur of this area can take your breath away the fi rst time you see it, with steep mountains dropping into deep waters. Everyone will rendezvous at Squirrel Cove at Cortes Island for the night. From there the trip just gets more exhilarating as

the boats position themselves to pass through Surge Narrows at slack tide. Tide tables are a must!

The reward is anchoring at the Octopus Islands Marine Park where the mariners socialize over appetizers and dinner, often made from the bounty of the sea. A good night’s rest at anchor is needed as the next day can be long.

The next leg is timed for slack at a series of rapids — Upper and Lower Okisollo Rapids, then nose out onto

Johnstone Strait before ducking into the ‘back way’ again through Nodales, Cordero, Chancellor, Wellbore and Sunderland channels. Green Point and Whirlpool are the last rapids before heading toward Johnstone Strait again.

At this point everyone usually heaves a sigh of relief. However, the weather must be checked to decide if the fl otilla waits out the later-day strait winds or continues.

There are anchorages back

in Sunderland Channel. If the winds are fair, it can be a lovely 24-kilometre (12-nautical mile) run up to Port Harvey at the fi rst entrance into the Broughtons.

If the winds turn, it can be a long hard go of it, looking at the bottoms of boats in front of you. But this is where you have a chance to see the orcas feeding along the shorelines.

Once in the Broughtons, it’s a whole different world of cloud-shrouded mountains, calm waters, fl oating islands and history that takes your breath away. But that is a whole other article that you can read on the yacht club website at www.comoxvalleyyachtclub.com.

For membership information in the Comox Valley Yacht Club, call Sue at 250-898-8333 or Bonnie at 250-941-8432.

Recently, a crowd of forty people gathered at North Island College to view the new documentary fi lm, ‘Status Quo? The unfi nished business of feminism in Canada’ by the National Film Board.

“There is no less need for feminism and

a women’s movement now than there was in the 1960’s when the Royal Commission on the Status of Women made recommendations to the Federal Government,” said Richelle Gardiner-Hynds, instructor in Women’s Studies at

the College, and chair of the event.

A panel discussion following the fi lm included Savannah McKenzie, a student at North Island College; Marie Skinner, a retired teacher and chair-elect of Senior Peer Counselling in the Comox Valley;

Wendy Morin of the John Howard Society and the Comox Valley Transition Society; and Tammy Collard with the B.C. Ministry of Social Development. Savannah’s initial reaction to the fi lm was that “we can see the strong women who came before us.

Our past successes are vulnerable, however, and we must continue to be vigilant in order to keep moving forward on women’ issues”.

The audience also got involved. One audience member commented, “I think it’s great that there

are young women out there to continue the fi ght. My God, girls! Go for it!” Another noted that feminism is not radical, “Radical means rooted, not ‘far out’”. Yet another encouraged women to go into politics “to be law makers and not just law changers.”

The fi lm is being screened in cities across Canada through a partnership between the National Film Board and the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW). You can catch ‘Status Quo?’ on the National Film Board website.

Gem Munro and son Alastair came to the North Island last week for a pair of addresses to Port Hardy and Port McNeill Rotary members.

Gem, along with wife Dr. Tanyss Munro and their four children, are integral members of the Amarok Society, a Canadian charity organization which aims to improve standards in some of the poorest areas in the world through education.

The husband and wife team worked as teachers in an isolated First Nation reserve in Northern Alberta, solidifying their belief in education as a driving force for change.

In 2005, the family relocated to Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, to teach in the slums there.

Gem explained to the Rotarians that Bangladesh posed unique challenges, and the family quickly recognized the traditional approach of building schools and bringing in teachers was not going to work.

They hit upon a different approach, one that many people assured them was unworkable, and decided to go into the slums and teach uneducated mothers there to be teachers, a project dubbed Mothers of Intention.

Gem explained that the project presented a series of challenges, culturally in particular. In Bangladesh, described as a “moderate Muslim country” by Gem, women typically marry young, and once married, their education ends.

He explained that

many of the women they educate typically enter the program with a vocabulary of around 700 words in Bengali. An educated westerner can draw on somewhere in the range of 15,000 words.

Most are illiterate, Gem said.

“One of the fi rst things we teach is how to hold a pencil,” he said. “The next is

which end goes to the paper.”

By the time they graduate from the program they can read and write in their local language, have learned English (described by Gem as “the language of opportunity” in the region) and math, as well as basic nutrition and confl ict resolution. These women then go on to educate children

in their area.The program has

been a huge success, Gem explained, with fourteen schools now in operation in Dhaka and a further six in the city of Khulna.

The group has received invitations to open more such schools.

After initial resistance from some husbands and the

slumlords who control the areas in which the schools operate, the project and the results it has shown have won over opponents.

The society has a partnership with the Rotary Club of Belleville, Ont., and in 2010 also formed an agreement with the Rotary Club of Midtown Dhaka to support its projects.

Gem explained that besides Rotarian support and individual donations, the society is also funded through sales of his book, SouthAsian Adventures with the Active Poor, a bestselling narrative of some of Gem’s experiences in the region.

For more information on the Amarok Society and the work it does, or for excerpts of Gem’s book, go to www.amaroksociety.org.

Fishing for winter spring salmon has been good in areas north of Browns Bay but has slowed in areas near the Lighthouse and the Hump. Over the winter many fi sh have been caught in the 14 to 18 pound range and the largest close to 28.

Our local lakes produce nice size trout in the summer but winter fi shing has been productive using worms fi shed from shore. The Oyster and Salmon can produce some nice catches of steelhead now through May.
