After finishing a close second to Adrian Dix in 2011, Mike Farnworth says he is running for NDP leader to correct the party’s mistakes of 2013.

Offering “a progressive alternative that can win an election,” the long-time Port Coquitlam MLA referred Sunday to the NDP campaign choice to run mostly upbeat advertising to promote a platform with few specifics.

“Under my watch, the B.C. NDP will never fight an election with one hand tied behind its back,” Farnworth said in an opening statement released by his campaign. “We’ll be tough on the issues and hold the B.C. Liberals to account for their disastrous record, while being clear about what we would do differently.”

Farnworth also gave a hint of a more pro-development stance for the party, which has opposed oil pipelines and offered lukewarm support to liquefied natural gas development.

Roadside suspensions and vehicle seizures for drivers blowing as low

as 0.05 per cent blood alcohol have helped cut B.C. drinking and driving deaths by half, Attorney General Suzanne Anton said Monday.

Government statistics show average fatalities from drinking and driving have fallen to 54 a year from a previous five-year average of 112, since the law took effect in September 2010.

Anton said the

program is so successful that other provinces are moving in the same direction. Anton wouldn’t comment on court challenges to the program, which imposes penalties on people who test in the “warn” range below

0.08, where they are subject to impaired driving charges.

“If there have to be changes made to it, we will be making those, but the program is good, it saves lives and that’s what’s important,” Anton said.

The “immediate roadside prohibition” program replaced most impaired driving charges with administrative penalties, including a three-day driving ban and a $200 administrative fee for those who blow between 0.05 and 0.08,

if the police officer has reason to believe the driver is impaired.

For those who blow in the “impaired” range of 0.08 or higher, police have the option of imposing a 90-day driving ban, a $500 penalty and impounding the vehicle for 30 days instead of laying a charge.

Towing and impounding a vehicle can result in a $700 bill, and a $1,400 mandatory “responsible driver program” may also be required before the driver’s licence is returned. The

government terms the measure “Alexa’s Law,” after four-year-old Alexa Middelaer, who was feeding horses at the roadside in Delta when she was struck by an impaired driver and killed in 2008.

“After decades of stagnant progress on reducing the number of preventable deaths caused by drinking and driving, as a community we’ve made significant and sustained changes,” said Laurel Middelaer, Alexa’s mother, who has been an advocate on the issue since the tragedy.

A new container recycling plant will be built in the Lower Mainland this year as industry stewardship group Multi-Material B.C. takes over responsibility for an expanded blue box recycling program.

MMBC on Thursday named Green By Nature EPR, a firm formed by three recycling industry partners, to handle the processing of packaging and printed paper province-wide.

Cascades Recovery, Emterra Environmental and Merlin Plastics are the three companies that have joined forces to invest $32 million building the new container recycling plant, a new material recovery facility in Nanaimo, as well as

won’t handle the curbside collection of packaging – that will still be done mostly by local municipalities, except for a few locations where new collectors are yet to be named.

Besides new plants, existing operations will also be used.

A material recovery facility in Surrey run by Emterra will help sort materials, and the plastics recovered are expected to be processed at Merlin Plastics’ plant in Delta.

A site for the new container plant hasn’t yet been revealed.

“The entire system is designed to shift everything into two streams,” said MMBC managing director Allen Langdon. “One is for fibres – newspapers, cardboard

and printed papers – and the other for containers.”

Green By Nature expects to employ 570 workers in all.

The new system – slated to launch May 19 – promises to add 10 new types of containers or other

materials to what households can place in blue boxes.

The new categories include milk cartons, foam packaging, plant pots, aluminum foil packages, plastic clamshell containers and drink cups.

Langdon said a public education campaign will launch in late April.

In most communities, glass bottles and jars will be directed to depots, instead of curbside pickup, but Langdon said there are exceptions, as some municipalities have opted to continue segregated glass pickup.

MMBC says it needs to keep glass separate from paper and other recyclables to avoid contamination that slashes the value of materials.

“There will be a

much better chance of it being recycled,” Langdon said, noting 90 per cent of glass going into blue boxes actually now ends up going to landfills.

MMBC’s operations are expected to cost $85 million per year and be fully funded by its member businesses, which include major retailers and consumer product makers.

The stewardship group is targeting a 75 per cent recycling rate, up from 50 per cent province-wide now.

The producer-pay system, mandated by the provincial government, has been controversial.

Cities have feared they’ll be forced to pay more to maintain service, while businesses worry about paperwork and MMBC-levied fees to recycle the packaging they generate.

Gone are the days of oiling wood floors and then waxing them with the old Johnston paste waxes.

Those messy, labour-intensive waxes were eventually superseded by oil-based urethanes, and later water-based urethanes when we realized the oil based versions were very toxic.

Water-based finishes, however, just didn’t give wood that beautiful luster we

wanted, nor did it show the wood’s grains very nicely. And then there was the elephant in the room . . . they were still toxic.

Enter Hardwax oil finishes

from Europe. Using modern science to blend vegetable oils

with plant waxes, companies like Osmo and Saicos (from Germany) have created environmentally friendly wood finishes that enhance the natural esthetics of wood while also offering great wearability.

The oils penetrate wood fibres while the waxes create wear and stain resistance. The cleaners work to maintain and refresh, whereas urethane

finishes needed sanding to refresh, a process that gets expensive as the years pass. The result is that hardwax oil finishes are also incredibly easy to maintain.

Hardwax oil manufacturers vary their finishes for various applications such as industry, trade and consumer use. Most of these finishes incorporate oils from thistle, sunflower, safflower or soya combined

with carnauba and candelilla wax, along with benzene-free mineral spirits and earth pigments for colors. Some are UV-cured in flooring factories and now seen in stores as an alternative finish.

The Hump is also an area to � sh this time of year.

At Discovery Pier Walter Johnson of Campbell River landed a 15 pound spring with the help of � shing buddy Doug Turko.The Pier is a gathering point for locals and tourists who � sh in the summer months and many a � shing story can be told on the Pier. Especially the one that got away In Sayward the wharf is a gathering spot for anglers to catch � sh when the run is on.

With the longer daylight hours and mild weather Comox Lake and Maple Lake can be a great spot to troll lures or plugs and some big � sh can be caught. At the moment higher elevation lakes will be snow

covered and in some places hard to get to.

With the recent dump of snow the rivers will be more � shable and � sh will

be on the move. Water levels have been down in most rivers between Port Hardy and Courtenay and those heading out for steelhead should encounter good water conditions in the days to come.

Ready to rollWith names like Foxie McMuff, Ballsy Benoit and Lumber Smack, Campbell River’s roller girls will � oor you with the rock ‘em sock ‘em style of Roller Derby

When Kim Emsley-Leik rollerskates around a rink, it’s no leisurely roll.

She takes numbers and clears bodies.

Emsley-Leik is one of a growing number of local women who have taken up the thrilling sport of roller derby.

But it’s more than a sport. It has a culture all its own. It even comes with its own rough and cheeky nicknames.

At the rink, Emsley-Leik becomes Foxie McMuff and her job as a blocker is to block the opposing team’s jammer from passing Emsley-Leik’s fellow blockers and scoring points. If the jammer gets around twice, she racks up one point for each skater she passes on the second lap.

Emsley-Leik is one of seven from Campbell River who skate for the Rink Minx, a team based out of the Comox Valley. The other members are: Lind-sey Ryzak, who’s known around the rink as Lita Riot, Peggy Benoit (Ballsy Benoit), Lisa Jackson (Whiskey Jack), Chantelle McPherson (Chantos San-chez), Kari Barker (Swifty), and Taisa Brown (Lumber Smack).

Though so many members of Rink Minx call Campbell River home, the team has had a dif� cult time bringing the sport to the River City.

“What’s challenging is � nding the space,” Emsley-Leik says. “A lot of facil-ity staff assume our roller skates will ruin the � oor, which is not the case. So we practice in Courtenay, which is unfortunate because half the team is from Campbell River.”

But having said that, Rink Minx will be hosting its � rst ever Campbell Riv-er bout at Strathcona Gardens on Saturday, July 5.

Emsley-Leik said she hopes the bout, which will attract teams from all over Vancou-ver Island, will show the viability of having the sport in Campbell River.

“Every time we host a bout there’s an in� ux of skaters,” Emsley-Leik says. “They spend money on hotels, on restaurants, they go shopping, they go to bars. The more events we have, it only bene� ts the community in the long run. People want events to go to, they want to be entertained.”

And roller derby is no doubt entertaining. It’s a full contact sport full of positional, or booty blocking, ride outs, and hip whips. For that reason, each skater must wear full

gear which includes a helmet, mouth and wrist guards, knee pads, elbow pads, and roller skates.

While serious injuries are rare, Emsley-Leik says she does come home with some “wicked” bruises. “We call them trophy bruises,” she says smiling. “They’re these huge things sometimes. We’re actually kind of proud of them.”

But she enjoys it all the same. “I just love to skate,” says Emsley-Leik, a former � g-ure skater, who � rst got into the sport while living in her hometown of Williams Lake. “I’ve always loved to skate. I like being a part of a team atmosphere. It also promotes � tness. We’re always trying to � nd a way to up the bar just one more notch.”

Emsley-Leik and teammate Melicious Mooose (Melissa Curtis) have even started roll-

er skating from Courtenay to Campbell River on Sunday mornings after bouts, leaving Courtenay at 4 a.m. and winding up with breakfast at the Dolphins Resort.

Bouts are typically held Saturday nights at the Comox Valley Sports Centre be-tween May and July. But Emsley-Leik says the team is trying hard to bring some of the games to Campbell River. “I think the Campbell River girls de� nitely

have a certain amount of pride in trying to bring the sport to Campbell River be-cause we live here, it’s our hometown,” Emsley-Leik says.
