It is no coincidence that goods have been traded

through Norrköping since the Middle Ages. Quite

simply, we have an excellent location not only

for Swedish exports but also for the import and

distribution of goods to markets in Sweden, the

Nordic countries and the Baltic region.

In recent times, thanks to major investments in

the infrastructure, the Port of Norrköping is better

equipped than ever. Ship operators will find a

strategic modern fairway able to receive the large

vessels now trading in the Baltic Sea. The port also

has ready access to two trans-European highways,

three national highways and a major rail hub as well

as an international airport.

The port is now home to many companies offering

logistics services. And, with one of the largest port

facilities in the country, we have the capacity to offer

the same good opportunities to many more companies.

Our customers include shippers of many types of

cargo and we have worked hard to develop our

Perfect locationfor goods handling

capacity as a full-service port in order to meet the

demands and preferences of our clients. Through

co-operation with customers, suppliers and

universities, we have taken new steps and introduced

a series of innovations.

Container port

With 6,000 metres of quays and, in principle, fully

Baltic depth, we have all the right things in place for

the development of efficient and diversified activities

in the Port of Norrköping. These include a brand-new

container port with an integrated intermodal terminal;

ro-ro berths; an integrated facility for grain handling;

oil depots; bulk and general cargo handling quays

with all-weather storage in warehouses; and handling

facilities for heavy project cargoes.

Norrköping Port & Stevedoring (NHS) is responsible

for the day-to-day operation and long-term

development of the port. The expertise acquired

by NHS is an asset that we continue to nurture and

develop, and we are always looking for new ways

to further enhance the quality of our services. We

have also taken a modern approach to our support

services, using the latest IT and planning systems to

streamline the entire flow of goods and information.

We have a significant cluster of companies in

the logistics sector, with many leading players

represented. Overall, the Port of Norrköping offers a

significant pool of knowledge and experience that we

know can deliver real benefits to our customers.

Thanks to new developments and a combined effort by

the whole port community, we have made Norrköping

one of the most modern ports and terminals in Sweden

and the Baltic region. This has been well received by

the market, thus reinforcing our determination to go on

developing and improving our business.

The Port of Norrköping, on the Baltic Sea

coast, about 130 km south of Stockholm, is

one of Sweden’s most important gateways

for maritime traffic. About 50 per cent of all Swedes

live in east and central Sweden, within a 200 km

radius of Norrköping, while the port also lies at the

heart of a major industrial area containing such key

industries as paper, pulp, timber, steel, agriculture

and energy as well as the high technology sector.

Today, however, Norrköping is much more than a centre

for sea trade. It has evolved into a full-service port, one

of the best equipped in the Baltic region, providing a

hub for logistics and intermodal cargo handling. These

services are in strong demand, both by exporters of

industrial products and by those involved in the import

and distribution of goods.

Distribution

In response to changing market patterns in Sweden

and across the Nordic countries, the Port of Norrköping

has found new status as a distribution hub for the

whole Nordic region. The port company, Norrköping

Port & Stevedoring (NHS), has led a major – and still

continuing – project to expand port facilities and

enhance the transport infrastructure so as to take full

advantage of this vital status.

Already, for some years, Norrköping has been home

to a cluster of companies specialising in third-party

logistics. They have made good use of Norrköping’s

first-rate transport links – including two motorways, a

main railway and an international airport – to provide

manufacturers and other cargo owners with an ideal

base for distributing their products, not only in Sweden

but across the Nordic region, including Denmark,

Norway, Finland and the Baltic States.

More recently, the port company, NHS, has added

further strength to this vital transport operation

The NHS has an ongoing mission to attract new business

and new investors into Norrköping by creating the perfect

environment for cargo handling, storage and distribution.

Full service port

The handling of seaborne cargo remains a key activity

for the port company. Norrköping has the advantage of

being a full service port, equipped to handle all kinds of

cargo, from unitised traffic to breakbulk and from dry

and liquid bulks to heavy lift items.

Norrköping is one of Sweden’s principal gateways for

forest products, especially paper, pulp, logs and sawn

timber, and a major port for cereals and grain handling.

The range of goods handled by Norrköping includes:

• Containers and road trailers

• Paper and pulp

• Sawn timber, logs and wood chips

• Petroleum products

• Steel products

• Fertilisers

• Cereals and grain

• Coal and salt

• Heavy lift items.

The port is composed of several terminal areas. Cargo

is handled mainly in three areas – the Inner Harbour,

the Öhman Terminal and the Pampus Terminal – all of

which are linked to the national road and rail networks.

by investing in new cargo handling facilities and

infrastructure improvements. They include:

• A new state-of-the-art container port and combi terminal at the Pampus Terminal

• A project to widen and deepen the port’s main approach channel, being completed in 2011.

These key investments have been made in direct

response to customer demand. The NHS believes

that both the port and its customers have a common

goal: to create a really effective logistics network that

benefits not only port users and local businesses but

also the regional economy as a whole. An additional

benefit – and a particularly valuable one in Swedish

eyes – is the reduction in environmental impact that has

been achieved by making greater use of sea and rail

transport in preference to road haulage.

The NHS has focused much of its new investment on

the Pampus Terminal. The newly upgraded approach

channel makes the port available to shipping on a

24-hour basis, without any restrictions due to bad

weather or poor visibility.

Sea, rail and road

In 2010 the Pampus Terminal became a full-service

facility with the opening of a purpose-built container

port with an integrated combi terminal. This allows

Pampus to handle a range of traffic, with direct

transfers of cargo between sea, rail and road services.

Equipment includes two ship-to-shore gantry cranes,

while storage space has been increased, with more

covered storage for sawn timber. A new direct and

electrified rail link is planned in the near future. This will

help to speed the flow of rail freight to and from the

Pampus Terminal.

Meanwhile, the Inner Harbour is used for handling

and storage of breakbulk, dry and liquid bulks and

general cargo. There is also a 350 tonne capacity heavy

lift crane, the largest of its kind in Sweden, used for

handling project cargo. Vessels up to 35,000 dwt can

reach the Inner Harbour by way of the Lindö Canal.

As one of Sweden’s most strategically

important maritime gateways, the Port of

Norrköping plays a key role as a full-service

port for cargoes of all kinds.

Now, the port has raised its game and has

endeavoured to maximise its potential by upgrading

its infrastructure and establishing new areas for

cargo handling and port operations.

Infrastructure

Thanks to its status as a vital link in the trans-

European transport network, Norrköping has become

the focus of a major programme of development –

one of Sweden’s most far-reaching port investments

in recent times. This involves a series of long-term

projects to improve and expand the infrastructure of

the city and its port.

The port company, Norrköping Port & Stevedoring

(NHS) has been at the forefront of this programme,

working closely with government transport

in key facilities gives boost to port’s intermodal status

Investment

Improved access by seaThe upgrading of the approach channel to the Pampus Terminal has been a key project for NHS. Work began in 2010 with completion in spring 2011. The channel has been widened from 60 metres to 100 metres and deepened from 12.4 metres to 14.9 metres. On completion of this project, the channel can be used on a 24-hour basis by shipping, even in conditions of bad weather and poor visibility.

The key to Norrköping’s success as an intermodal cargo handling centre is its transport infrastructure, which includes two motorways and a main railway as well as an international airport.

This first-rate infrastructure has evolved over the years thanks to the port’s excellent geographical location, which makes it a natural gateway for goods in transit to and from eastern and central Sweden.

administrations and other stakeholders. Transport

planners across Europe have shown a lot of interest

in developments at Norrköping because they involve

all modes of transport in the region’s network.

The main stakeholders are the Swedish Transport

Administration, the Swedish Maritime Administration,

the Regional Development Council of Östsam, the

County Administrative Board, the Municipality of

Norrköping and NHS.

Environment

This programme has not only opened the way

for a major expansion of intermodal services in

Norrköping but has also shone the spotlight on

its role as an environmentally friendly port. When

it comes to achieving national and international

targets for reducing carbon dioxide emissions and

providing alternatives to Sweden’s congested road

and rail networks, Norrköping has led by example.

By putting in place such a new, first-rate intermodal

infrastructure, the Port of Norrköping has made a real

contribution to sustainable transport.

Key projects

• A new purpose-built container terminal with an integrated combi terminal entered service at the Pampus Terminal in 2010. This is now a full-service facility, able to handle a complete range of cargo traffic.

• The shipping approach channel to the Pampus Terminal has been widened and deepened to provide higher levels of safety and improved access to the terminal.

• In the near future, a new electrified rail link will provide a direct route between the Pampus Terminal and the national rail network, thus helping to speed the flow of rail freight to and from the port.

The Pampus Terminal has been transformed into a full-service facility, able to handle a range of cargo traffic. Such items as bulk, breakbulk and unitised traffic can now be marshalled at one multipurpose facility, with direct transfers of cargo between sea, rail and road services.

NHS has invested in two new ship-to-shore gantry cranes, with a lifting capacity of 60 tonnes, designed to handle the large containerships now trading in the Baltic Sea. These cranes are also equipped to handle other types of cargo.

The combi terminal has six parallel rail sidings with capacity for full-length trains.

There has also been investment in improved cargo storage facilities at Pampus, with larger areas of storage, including covered storage, now available for exports of sawn timber.

NHS has also invested in new procedures, skills and tools to provide a more efficient terminal operation. By applying the latest IT and planning technology, the port company has streamlined the entire flow of goods and information.

The organisation responsible for running the

port is Norrköpings Hamn och Stuveri AB

(NHS) – or Norrköping Port & Stevedoring.

NHS, in co-operation with other key players in the

port community, is responsible for the day-to-day

operation and long-term development of the port.

Its mission is to transform Norrköping into a cargo

handling and logistics centre that is not only vital

to the trans-European transport network but also

environmentally friendly and ecologically sustainable.

NHS is working towards this goal by providing more

cargo handling capacity – to ensure a smooth flow of

traffic – and making a series of improvements to the

port’s road, rail and maritime infrastructure.

Competitive

In recent years, major investments have been made

in quays, port plans, cranes, handling equipment and

technical facilities with the aim of improving productivity

and making port services more competitive. Major

projects have included an expansion of the Pampus

Terminal and the creation of a new container port with

an integrated combi terminal.

Today, the Port of Norrköping can offer a much

improved capacity for various types of cargo along

with more efficient handling. This process has been

enhanced by the use of modern IT systems and other

state-of-the-art technology. NHS also aims to take an

active part in technological development.

Positive

As a result of this positive strategy, Norrköping

has seen a long period of steady growth in cargo

handling and intermodal activities, with improved

services both in the maritime sector and in overland

transport, particularly rail freight.

NHS is a logistics provider in its own right. It offers

a range of logistics solutions, including warehouse

handling services for industries and importers

and IT systems for traceability, labelling and

e-communication.

metropolitan area. Many industrial companies in this

region have long relied on Norrköping as a natural

gateway for their exports. Now, thanks to its strategic

location, Norrköping is carving out a new role for itself

as a cargo handling and distribution hub for markets

not only in Sweden but throughout the Baltic region.

Intermodal

The port is looking to exploit its special position by

focusing on its role as an intermodal centre. Recently,

the port company, Norrköping Port & Stevedoring

(NHS), has focused its efforts on providing enhanced

transport links and intermodal facilities, with a

comprehensive range of new equipment for handling

combi shuttles and wagon loads. NHS has continued

to invest in new facilities to make the port even more

efficient and productive. A milestone was reached

in 2010 with the relocation of container handling

operations to a new facility at the Pampus Terminal

consisting of a container terminal and an integrated

combi terminal.

s a distribution hub for the Nordic market,

Norrköping could hardly be better placed.

Its position – south of Lake Mälaren and

east of Lake Vättern – has been identified by

experts as Sweden’s commercial centre of gravity.

Norrköping is in the heart of one of Sweden’s biggest

production and consumer areas – the Stockholm-

A significant cluster of logistics companies have made

their home in Norrköping, including such top names

as DHL, DSV, Green Cargo, Kuehne + Nagel, ProLogis

and Schenker. These companies are strategically

located in or near the port area with ready access to

the main intermodal and deepsea terminals.

Logistics

As a result of these new developments, Norrköping is

now listed in the annual Swedish industry rankings as

the number one logistics centre on the east coast.

Maritime traffic is on the increase in the Baltic

Sea, with more and more breakbulk and container

shipping companies trading in the region, and

this has led to a growing demand for efficient

transhipment of cargo between sea and rail. The

industry has shown a lot of interest in the use

of feeder and combi shuttle services to provide

transport solutions throughout the Baltic region, with

the east coast of Sweden acting as a key centre. By

focusing intermodal traffic handling on a specialist

hub such as Norrköping, with its enhanced capacity

and improved access for shipping, it is possible to

handle larger volumes and thus achieve an economy

of scale. The benefits are passed on to other players

in the intermodal chain in the form of improved and

more cost-effective services.

infrastructure for all modes of transport and a wide

range of companies specialising in logistics and

supply chain services.

The choice of Norrköping for this project is

encouraging and stimulating for the whole

community of the region. It underlines the fact

that the Port of Norrköping, along with other local

suppliers involved in the project, have been well

able to meet the stringent environmental, safety and

production requirements set by the contractor.

The Port of Norrköping has landed an

important new role as the main supply base

for a major offshore pipeline project.

The Nord Stream natural gas pipeline is currently the

biggest infrastructure project in the Baltic region. It

involves the laying of a 1,224 km pipeline across the

Baltic Sea, from Vyborg in Russia to Greifswald in

Germany. The pipeline is due to be completed and to

deliver the first gas in 2011.

Qualified

The contractor required a customised logistics support

facility to ensure that the pipeline is built safely and with

a minimum impact on the sensitive ecosystem of the

Baltic Sea. The Port of Norrköping is well qualified to

meet the contractor’s requirements and has landed the

role of central supply base for the pipe-laying contract.

Norrköping was judged to be an ideal base for

these operations because it is a modern full-service

port with a large-scale oil harbour, a first-rate

Supply baserole brings new status to port

Modern information technology has brought

key benefits to the Port of Norrköping and

its customers in recent years.

Today, the port company, Norrköping Port and

Stevedoring (NHS), is very much a knowledge-

focused organisation, using modern IT solutions

to improve the flow of goods and information. The

new technology has allowed NHS to offer a greater

degree of administrative support, while improving

the effectiveness of the transport chains and giving

customers ready access to reliable information.

NHS has invested in various IT solutions that have

delivered new improved benefits to customers.

They include IT systems for warehouse hotels and

modern technology for traceability, labelling and

electronic communications, based on internet-

based container tracking, various EDI services

and wireless communication with work vehicles

operating in the port. These solutions are based on

a totally integrated system that includes all activities

in the port.

At the new Pampus container terminal, NHS has

developed a new generation of IT applications with

a focus on integration and optimisation of quays,

ships, trains, warehousing and container handling.

Graphical user interfaces and accurate GPS

positioning are the key elements of this venture,

which involves a simple pre-planning sequence,

short lead times and an efficient service for haulage

companies, shipping companies, rail operators and

other port users.

Solution

Together with ongoing investment in port equipment,

this programme is aimed at improving the port’s

intermodal structure so as to offer customers a total

transport solution. The new intermodal set-up allows

customers to transfer cargo safely and effectively

between different modes of transport and to make

optimum use of the whole transport chain in terms of

cost, time and environmental impact.

warehousing. One major user is Holmen Timber,

which operates Scandinavia’s largest sawmill

at Braviken, close to the Pampus Terminal. The

company took the decision to use the terminal for

storage of all its products, thus helping to boost

capacity and attract more liner services.

Gateway

Most of this traffic comes by road and rail from

sawmills in central and southern Sweden within a

400 km radius of Norrköping.

Norrköping is also a gateway for the paper and pulp

industry by virtue of its key location at the heart of a

major papermaking area. Significant exports of pulp

and paper are handled in Norrköping – especially

from Holmen Paper, Billerud and Fiskeby.

On the import side, there is a considerable traffic in

raw materials for the local paper and pulp mills. In

addition, Norrköping discharges pulp wood and saw

logs from the Baltic States and Russia.

Handling and storage of forest products is a

key activity for Norrköping. The port is one

of Sweden’s leading gateways for paper,

pulp, sawn timber and other products.

Outbound traffic is dominated by sawn timber,

with large volumes being loaded for export at the

deepwater Pampus Terminal. The terminal has ample

storage capacity available for sawmill owners and

timber traders including both open storage and

wood and saw wood. Vessels are discharged quickly

and efficiently using modern hydraulic cranes. The

Inner Harbour is both rail and road linked, allowing

logs to be trucked or rail hauled directly to paper mills

and sawmills in Sweden and Norway.

For exports of sawn timber, the deepwater Pampus

Terminal is one of the most modern facilities in

Scandinavia. The terminal has a total of 640 metres

of quay. The depth was recently dredged to 14.9

metres to accommodate deeper-draught vessels.

Vessels are worked by five large cranes of up to 50

tonnes capacity. Two of these are ship-to-shore cranes

with special equipment for handling breakbulk cargo.

The terminal has large areas of open and covered

Deepsea traffic is handled at the Djurön terminal in

Bråviken Bay, where export grain is transhipped from

feeder vessels to large bulk carriers up to panamax

size. The Djurön terminal has a total of 270,000

tonnes of storage capacity.

Oil products

Norrköping is a key gateway for the import and

distribution of oil products. About half the population

of Sweden and much of its industry are located

within 200 km of the port, and the port is better

equipped than ever for inland distribution.

Each year Norrköping handles over 1.2 million cubic

metres of oil products. They include motor spirit,

gasoil, heavy fuel, bitumen and special gasoline.

In addition, Norrköping is home to Lantmännen

Iron and steel

With good storage facilities, efficient cargo handling

equipment and direct links by road and rail,

Norrköping is perfectly placed for handling of iron

and steel and other metal products. The port has

ample capacity for handling and storage of various

products including iron, steel, rebar and aluminium.

There are also large-scale metal shredding plants in

the surrounding area.

Energy products

The supply of raw materials for the energy sector

accounts for a significant portion of cargo handling

in the port. A range of products are imported through

Norrköping for use in the production of energy,

including wood chips, energy wood and coal as well

as biomass pellets and fuel oil.

In the area of combustible waste, imports from other

European sources have increased in recent years.

Other customers in this sector include E.ON,

Tekniska Verken in Linköping, Agroetanol and

Swecox, which has its own facility in the port area.

Project cargo

A specialist activity for Norrköping is the handling of

project cargoes such as heavy lift and out-of-gauge

items. The port has probably the best handling

equipment and expertise of its kind in Sweden.

The Inner Harbour has a 350 tonne heavy lift crane

for loading and discharging of transformers, turbines

and other special cargoes. Regular customers in the

project cargo sector include ABB, Siemens and other

Swedish high-tech industries.

Etablering NorrköpingE.ON Värme Sverige Europa Transport

E.ON Värme Sverige operates a complex of energy plants in the Händelö industrial area of Norrköping.

Together with Lantmännen Agroetanol and Svensk Biogas, E.ON has designed a complex that uses state-of-the-art technology to harness the high energy by-products of the cereal-based fuel ethanol.

Working in co-operation and making use of local resources, this complex is able to achieve a higher exchange of energy and greater benefits for the climate than could be achieved by each individual company on its own.

Händelö is home to a cluster of eco industries, all of which utilise each others’ by-products. At the hub of this cluster is E.ON’s cogeneration plant, which uses renewable fuel and waste to produce electricity, district heating and – most importantly for the other energy plants – process steam.

The aim is able to produce efficient energy systems and to economise on resources by exploiting the synergies between energy companies and the process industry.
