    7 Benefits

    7.1 Cost-efficient modular site

With Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station, the same equipment can be used to build

coverage and capacity. A high cell capacity and wide coverage per site means fewer

sites which makes building a network more cost-effective. Flexi Multiradio 10 Base

Station can be installed at any existing legacy GSM/EDGE/CDMA/WCDMA site for a

broadband data capability upgrade. Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station is designed to utilize

    the existing site equipment.

    Low site rental costs

Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station reduces BTS site rental costs because a BTS-specific

cabinet or extra floor space is no longer needed on the site. However, existing sitesupport and auxiliary cabinets can be used to house Flexi Multiradio 10 BTS modules. The modules can be also installed on a wall.

    Low total site power consumption

Because of the high integration of Flexi Multiradio 10 BTS and the advanced power

amplifiers the overall power consumption is decreased. In typical configurations, the

power saving is up to 60% compared to the first generation of WCDMA BTS. Additional

    benefits are:

smaller battery capacity for the same backup time

    less AC-DC rectifiers

smaller fuses and thinner power feeding cables air-conditioning for indoor sites needed only in special cases

    no air-conditioning for outdoor sites

no need for a dedicated cabinet for the power system and auxiliary equipment

    Easy installation

A Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station module can be lifted, carried, and put in place by one

person. The average module installation time is reduced, compared to traditional cabinet

    BTSs.

Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station can be installed on a wall, poll, or floor. It fits in the

existing legacy GSM/EDGE/CDMA/WCDMA BTS footprints as well. Flexi Multiradio 10

BTS outdoor is protected to at least IP65 level and can be installed as such at an

outdoor site. In addition, both indoor and outdoor cabinet installation options are

available. Installation locations for a Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station can be smaller than

or the same as those reserved for previous BTSs.

    SW-defined BTS

Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station can be SW-configured according to requirements of a

given radio technology - GSM/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA+, or LTE (TD/FDD). Additionally,

many SW-definable features can be activated by the software. For example:

sector activation (one, two, or three sectors active of a 3-sector RF Module)

    RF power mode for active sector (8, 20, 40, 60, or 80 W)

g The full feature list for each RAT can be found in Feature List document.

    Low acoustic noise

The acoustic noise produced by a Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station site is low because of

reduced power consumption and an increased unit integration level. Site acceptance is

easier, especially at urban outdoor sites. Fan speeds and acoustic noise are adapted tothe BTS load and ambient temperature.

    Easy commissioning

The autodetection feature of Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station makes commissioning and

integrating fast and easy. The commissioning wizard guides the user step-by-step

through the whole commissioning process. At the end of the process, the commissioning

wizard produces a BTS Commissioning Report.

    Reliable operation

Simplicity and speed of maintenance improves operational reliability. Maintenance is

improved by module integration and automatic fault detection procedures. Specialattention has been paid to Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station software start time, reducing,

for instance, downtime when a new software package is put into use.

    Intelligent shut-down

Intelligent shut-down feature optimizes the investment to one battery backup system on

a high-capacity BTS, especially on sites that operate as important transmission hub

nodes. With intelligent shut-down, separate backup systems for BTS and transmission

    are unnecessary.

Flexi Multiradio 10 BTS with battery backup system supports an intelligent BTS site

power shutdown procedure in the event of an AC power failure. During the

commissioning of each site, the operator can define different shutdown timers andpriorities for the BTS sectors and carriers.

Intelligent shutdown is activated from Power systems by activating one external alarm

    (EAC) lines to Flexi BTS.

When Flexi BTS detects a problem with the power provisioning - so switching to battery

power supply - an alarm is raised, and the BTS automatically reduces the required power

consumption. As a result, Flexi BTS is operating with reduced or no service offered as

long as there is enough power. Once the AC power is restored, Flexi BTS again offers

    full service.

The reduction of power is done via the stepwise shutdown of services which are

triggered by operator configurable timers per BTS. Different shutdown scenarios can beconfigured for the BTS by setting these timers.

Two timers with two different actions are steering the BTS behavior while working on

    batteries:

When the first timer is exceeded, selected number of cells will be switched off (for

example 222 to 111) When the second timer is exceeded, all cells of that BTS will be switched off

gracefully, means the UEs in that cell will be forced to change to a different cell.

The timer values can be configured via NetActTM or with BTS Site Manager.

The setting especially of the first timer value shall consider the specific situation in the

    network.

    For example, a three-sector two-carrier Flexi Multiradio 10 BTS WCDMA (2+2+2) site

equipped with battery backup operates as a transmission hub node towards other BTSs

in a chain. The first timer can be set to shut down the second carriers of the BTS, to

operate as 1+1+1 (for example) 30 minutes after an AC power failure. The second timer

can be set to shut down the remaining 1+1+1 BTS (for example) one hour after the ACpower failure, in order to support the transmission node for as long as possible with the

    existing battery capacity.

Timers can be set according to the configuration and priorities of each site.

7.2 One BTS for all network applications

Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station is optimized for high-capacity and wide-coverage

applications. It ensures cell ranges that meet the requirements of the coverage

applications. Therefore, the number of sites required for building a good coverage is

minimized. A seamless voice and data coverage area can be built easily.

Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station has been developed for coverage applications. It offers:

Wide variety of RF modules for different applications and use cases, for example

high downlink power with Flexi 3-sector 240 W RF Module.

Support of 2TX MIMO 40+40 W per sector with single 6TX RF Module and 4TX

MIMO 40+40+40+40 W per sector with two 6TX RF Modules.

Optimum uplink performance and receiver sensitivity.

Outdoor modules that can be located close to antennas, reducing antenna feederlosses.

Optimized antenna system performance, including 3GPP antenna tilting and

    masthead amplifier (MHA) support.

High downlink power in small size with Flexi Remote Radio Head.

w NOTICE: Masthead amplifier (MHA) is not supported in TD-LTE.

    Antenna line

Optimized Antenna line is a separate, optional site solution to additionally improve total

BTS and antenna system site RF performance and to minimize costs.

Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station Optimized Antenna line includes the following optional

    features, enabled by SW licenses:

Integrated MHA power feeding and O&M control to the RF Module of the Flexi BTS.

Integrated Antenna line supervision by Return Loss measurement (VSWR

    measurement).

Integrated 3GPP standard Antenna Tilt power feeding and 3GPP Antenna Tilt O&M

control to the RF Module of the Flexi BTS.

Flexi RF Module has an integrated lightning protection circuit in all antenna connectors.

The antenna connector of Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station is on the RF Module front

panel. No additional units, connectors, or jumper cables are necessary between the FlexiMultiradio 10 Base Station antenna connector and the antenna. That minimizes the

antenna line length and losses, as well as optimizes RF performance in both the uplink

    and downlink direction.

High speed broadband data and high capacity voice

Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station is a compact multi-purpose BTS designed to support all

future high speed broadband data and voice services over an air interface. Smooth data

In addition to the flexible traffic capacity, Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station also allows a

free mix of traffic patterns to accommodate whatever proportion of voice and data is

required. Depending on network capacity requirements, the capacity installed can be

matched with the capacity of the air interface.

7.3 Feederless and Distributed Site concept

Standard Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station modules support the Feederless BTS site

application where one RF Module or Remote Radio Head or the entire Flexi BTS is

installed close to the antennas. For a feederless site, traditional long antenna feeders or

masthead amplifiers are not needed thanks to which the BTS site RF performance is

optimized in both uplink and downlink.

The benefits of Feederless sites are:

Better RF performance because there are no downlink and uplink feeder losses.

Easier installation because of reduced cabling to the tower.

No long antenna feeders (typically six for a three-sector site).

    No masthead amplifiers/tower-mounted amplifiers.

Reduced total wind load and weight.

    Reduced total power consumption.

RF Module and Remote Radio Head can be software-activated and configured to

support one, two, or three sectors, or one sector with 2TX MIMO with optional four-way

    uplink diversity.

In the Distributed Site solution, RF Module(s) or Remote Radio Head(s) are located up to

20 km away from the main Flexi System Module site.

    8 Single RAN aspects

    8.1 RF sharing

The RF sharing feature allows Flexi Multiradio BTS RF Module to operate in a

concurrent mode with two radio access technologies (RATs). BTS resources between

RATs are allocated and shared by allowing two Flexi EDGE/WCDMA/LTE System

Modules to share the same Flexi BTS Multiradio RF Module or Remote Radio Head

(RRH). RF Module or RRH is transmitting RF carrier signals for two or more RATs at the

same frequency band. The RF Sharing concept simplifies the antenna system

complexity, and provides the operators with future-proof BTS site evolution.

The BTS site backhaul traffic can be aggregated on one integrated IP/Ethernet interface

by utilizing integrated QoS aware Ethernet switching. Synchronization Hub feature can

be used for reference clock distribution on the BTS site.

    QoS Aware Ethernet Switching

QoS Aware Ethernet Switching allows multiple Ethernet interfaces in the BTS to be

connected through the integrated Ethernet switch. One of the interfaces is used for the

backhaul connection, while others might be used to connect other BTSs (at the same or

another site). It is also possible to daisy chain several network devices.

The Ethernet switch is VLAN- and QoS-aware. The egress traffic of the switch can beshaped to meet the bandwidth limitations of the backhaul network. Additionally, a policy

can be applied to the ingress traffic to protect the BTS from the interface overload.

g Ethernet switching is required at the BTS where the layer 2 trafficaggregation/daisy chain is to be implemented.

    Synchronization Hub

Each System Module can act as a synchronization hub for other near-located System

Modules. For example, it can output 2.048 MHz SynchOut based on any available

synchronization source. If PDH interfaces are available in the System Module, then they

can also be used for synchronization distribution to other devices.

If the BTS loses all sync sources, it switches to hold-over mode. Then, the BTS Oven

Controlled Crystal Oscillator (OCXO) keeps running with the last known control value,

and still provides the sync output.

System Module can use the following synchronization methods:

    the TDM-based network interface

    the packet network via:

    Timing over Packet

    Synchronous Ethernet

    the 2.048 MHz signal

another Flexi BTS or a legacy BTS

    9 Baseband capacity

    Baseband capacity by SW license

Future-proof Flexi Multiradio System Module capacity is designed to support flexible and

cost-optimized site capacity evolution. The highest capacity Flexi System Module is

dimensioned to provide a hardware baseband capacity, for example, for up to three 20

MHz LTE cells with 2x2 MIMO (FSMF).

Baseband capacity of Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station can be optimized depending on

the BTS configuration and required traffic capacity of the BTS site. More baseband

capacity can be allocated remotely from NetAct by sending a Baseband SW License to

Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station. Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station baseband capacity can

be optimized in steps of Mbit/s without a site visit.

    Future capacity evolution

Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station is future-proof designed to support future capacity

demand. The Flexi BTS architecture supports baseband pooling of two System Modules,

making it possible to build high capacity sites. Flexi Multiradio System Module provides

space for up to two baseband extension sub-modules that triples the capacity of the Flexi

    Multiradio System Module.

SRIO and OBSAI RP3-01 interfaces provide connectivity for baseband capacity and/or

technology extension. Baseband extension and related interface utilization depends on

the radio access technology and the use case (a pure new Flexi Multiradio System

Module case or an existing Flexi System Module case).

    10.2 Remote management

NSN provides an industry-unique NetActTM Network Management System (NMS)

platform that fully integrates with GSM, WCDMA, LTE, and transmission networks. One

graphical user interface covers the entire network - radio, core, and mobile backhaul.

Personnel trained to operate NetActTM can manage the network with small effort.

Operators who already have NetActTM can include LTE in the same NMS and thus fully

capitalize on their investment in the state-of-the-art NMS.

Flexi Multiradio 10 BTS, like the entire RAN, can be managed through NetActTM. The

advanced monitoring functions of NetActTM make it possible to minimize management

tasks that need to be carried out on the site. NetActTM incorporates a full range of

functions, from fault, performance, and configuration management to transmission,

trouble, and security management. The BTS site power and backup system can also be

    monitored.

NSN also provides other higher level service management products, such as Service

Quality Manager, Serve atOnce Activation Manager, iSON Manager and Operations on

    Demand.

For more information, see NetActTM documentation available in NSN Online Services

    (NOLS), Product Information Center (PIC).

10.2.1 Remote User Event Log Management

Remote User Event Log Management (RUEM) is a feature that allows a network

management system (NMS) to trace operations done in network elements (NEs) by

different users. This functionality is sometimes called Audit Trail. User access and

operations might be successful or fail. In both cases this is logged.

    Figure 9 Audit trail

Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station Product Description Management and software

    Issue: 01G DN0971928 27

  • 7/26/2019 Nokia Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station Product Description

    28/47

With RUEM, operations are logged on Flexi Baseband Controller (FCT) and sent to

NetActTMwithin one single RUEM log file.

    NWI3 logged operations:

    Login attempts (successful and unsuccessful)

    Logout

    Configuration changes (on fragment level)

    Local account updates

    HTTP logged operations:

    Reboot operations

    Reset to factory default operation

    XoH logged operations:

SW Management (SW update Request and SW interrupt)

Object Configuration Management (for example ResetRequest)

    Licence Update/Deletion Request

Alarm Management and Diagnostics (for example Change Direct Access Status)

Test Management (for example Test Dedicated State Request)

User Management (for example Login and Modify User Request)

Commissioning (for example Parse Commissioning Data Request)

    Clock Operation Request

10.2.1.1 RUEM concept - how does it work?

RUEM correlates every management operation with each user:

NWI3 and XOH management operations implement session concept

    (username/password)

HTTP operations which are logged are operations that require username/password

    Figure 10 The RUEM concept

Management and software Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station Product Description

    28 DN0971928 Issue: 01G

  • 7/26/2019 Nokia Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station Product Description

    29/47

    Notification - Watermark

Operations that are logged by RUEM are stored in FCT in a ring buffer (internally). This

buffer is filled up for each logged operation.

As soon as a critical value (that is watermark, ~70% of total buffer size) is reached, FCT

will send a notification to NetActTM(mediated by OMS in Flexi).

    The RUEM upload mechanism

    1. Triggered by NetActTM

    2. Triggered by Network element (FCT) - if the Watermark level is reached

After a successful reading of the logfile by the NMS, the read logfile is deleted from the

BTS to free memory space for next log entries. Log files in the BTS are kept in non-

volatile memory, and thus data is not lost upon power breaks.

Exception:In case NetActTM still does not upload the RUEM log file, the buffer might fill

up to its maximum size and even exceed this. In the latter situation the buffer has an

overflow and some old information gets lost permanently. It is not recoverable. This

special event is called a wrapped-over event. This should be logged in RUEM log file.

    10.3 Configuration management

Once the BTS is in normal operation, a polling process is used to check possible

changes in the BTS configuration. When modules are added to or removed from the

BTS, the information in the hardware database changes.

    10.4 Software updates

Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station can store two software packages in its memory. The

software can be loaded either locally, with the BTS Site Manager software, or remotely

from NetActTM. Site visits are unnecessary for routine operation and maintenance (O&M)

    tasks.

Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station Product Description Management and software

  • 7/26/2019 Nokia Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station Product Description

    30/47

Typically, local software download is done only when the NetAct TM connection is missing,

for example, during the commissioning process. Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station

software can be downloaded as a background operation without interrupting the BTS

operation. The new software can be activated at any time. Reboot is required in order toput the software into use.

Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station only uses downloadable software. All software can be

downloaded and updated from NetActTM. This procedure is centralized, meaning that

several BTSs can be upgraded with the new software either simultaneously or one by

    one.

Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station keeps the current and previous software packages in its

flash memory. Either of these software versions can be activated at any time. A reboot is

required in order to put the software into use. Updated software (current and previous) in

the BTS can be seen through BTS Site Manager/NetActTM.

The RF Module and RRH SW is updated automatically during Flexi Multiradio 10 Base

    Station SW update.

    10.5 External alarms and controls

BTS inputs and outputs can be configured and tested locally at the BTS site with Flexi

Multiradio BTS Site Manager software. Six user-defined external inputs and six user-

controlled inputs/outputs are available and can be freely configured to support various

observation or control needs at the BTS site.

In normal operation, the external alarms and control outputs of the BTS are managed

    from NetAct

    TM

    after they have been configured.
