No 5 Wednesday 6th March 2019 KFPS News Principals message…….. Respect, Responsibility, Teamwork and Being Your Best Hello everyone, Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Teamwork and Being Your Best are values we discuss with our students on a regular basis. Our Positive Behaviour Matrix outlines our schools expectations around the demonstrated words and actions that are associated with these values. This week, our focus is on the value of Teamwork’. By definition teamwork is: The process of working collaboratively with a group of people in order to achieve a goal. Teamwork means that people will try to cooperate, using their individual skills and providing constructive feedback, despite any personal conflict between individuals. Teamwork: Help & include others Work together Encourage each other Share ideas and equipment Be honest when I am wrong Follow the rules of the activity Play fairly with others If someone is alone invite them to play Be a good sport & take turns Encourage others to do the right thing It is very important that children understand the importance and value of Teamwork and how each of us bring a different energy and aspect to a team. We are a TEAM at Kangaroo Flat Primary School – Together Everyone Achieves More. Speaking of Teamwork……..I wish to acknowledge our wonderful Parent & Friends Club. This team held their Annual General Meeting on Monday at 2pm and they have achieved such a great deal over this past 12 months. I would like to congratulate the following office bearers for the next 12 months. President: Judith Rainsbury Vice President: Amanda Hooley Secretary: Lauren Marron Treasurer: Sharyn Holmes. I would encourage any of our parents / carers to think about joining our P&F Club. They meet on the first Monday of the month at 2pm. If you are available and would like to get involved in our school then a monthly Parent Club meeting might just be for you! NEXT MEETING MONDAY APRIL 1 st at 2pm. United Classrooms Congratulations to all the students from grades 3 – 6 who nominated to be classroom representatives for United Classrooms. There was certainly an overwhelming response indeed! The successful classroom reps will be announced at this weeks assembly.

Reminders for next week……

Public Holiday – please don’t forget that next Monday 11th March is the Labour Day Public Holiday and therefore no school. Milo’s Birthday Party! Wednesday 13th March Our Foundation students and their families are invited to Milo’s 6th Birthday party to be held at school on Wednesday 13th March from 5:30 – 6:30pm. All of our Foundation students will know Milo Monkey through their Literacy lessons at school. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our parents/carers to discuss the reading expectations of our students and watch a demonstration about how to use the Little Learners Love Literacy readers. Of course, a birthday celebration would not be complete without a birthday cake and song! Please note this in your diaries Foundation Families as an afternoon not to miss! Athletics: Foundation – Grade 2 We will be holding our Foundation – Grade 2 Athletics carnival at school on Thursday 14th March starting at 9:30am. Our Junior Athletics carnival is held during the morning session only and will be completed prior to the first recess break at 11:30am. This shortened experience provides an opportunity for the students to participate without being overwhelmed. Parents and families are most welcome to attend and support on the morning. You will need to enter via the office and sign in. Grade 3- 6 The Grade 3-6 Athletics Day will be held next FRIDAY 15th MARCH. Parents most welcome to attend and watch our students run, jump and leap their way through the individual and team events. Students can wear their house colours on the day. Lockwood = BLUE Marong = GREEN Olympic = YELLOW Calder = RED What: Grade 3-6 Athletics When: Friday 15th March. Where: Athletics Track, Retreat Road, Flora Hill The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence: Schools across Australia are being called to get involved and take action on the ninth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) on Friday 15 March 2019.

Our school has registered our involvement. The theme for the 2019 National Day of Action is Bullying. No Way! Take action every day.

Schools have the chance to take action and empower young people to be part of the solution when addressing bullying in their school community. It provides an opportunity to focus on bullying and the big changes we can make to create safer communities for everyone.

Due to our Athletics program being held on Friday 15th march, our school will be taking our day of action on Thursday 14th March from 12 midday until 1:30pm. Classes will have a ser ies of activities and lessons and will promote the whole school ‘Bullying. No Way!’ message.

Thought of the week Success is never achieved by the size of your brain It is always achieved by the size of your thoughts.

Kind Regards, Kim Saddlier Principal

Internet safety risks for school-age children

There are three main kinds of internet risks for children. Content risks For school-age children these risks include things that they might find upsetting, disgusting or otherwise uncomfortable, if they come across them accidentally. This might include pornography, images of cruelty to animals, and real or simulated violence. Contact risks These risks include children coming into contact with people they don’t know or with adults posing as children online. For example, a child might be persuaded to meet someone he doesn’t know, share personal information with strangers, or provide contact details after clicking on pop-up messages. Conduct risks These risks include children acting in ways that might hurt others, or being the victim of this kind of behaviour. For example, a child might destroy a game her friend or sibling has created. Another conduct risk is accidentally making in-app purchases.

Protecting your child from internet safety risks: tips You can use a range of different strategies to help your school-age child stay safe while using the internet. Here are some ideas:

Create a family media plan. It’s best to create your plan with your child and ask them for suggestions. Your plan could cover things like screen-free areas in your house, internet safety rules like not giving out personal information, and programs and apps that are OK for your child to use.

Use child-friendly search engines like Kiddle, or content providers like ABC Kids, CBeebies, YouTube Kids or KIDOZ.

Check that games, websites and TV programs are appropriate for your child. You can do this by looking at reviews on Common Sense Media.

Use the internet with your child or make sure you’re close by and aware of what your child is doing while online. This way you can act quickly and reassure your child if they become concerned or upset by something they have seen online.

Check privacy settings and location services, use parental controls, use safe search settings on browsers, apps, search engines and YouTube.

Find out how to make complaints about offensive online content.

Block in-app purchases and disable one-click payment options on your devices.

Make sure older siblings follow your internet safety rules, like watching only age-appropriate programs when they go online with younger children.

MUSIC NEWS Things are starting get ‘drum rolling’ in the music room. Our foundation students are just learning their first music notes the quarter note and the eighth note. Our 1/2 and 3/4 students are all madly drumming away through the bucket drumming units and are finding quite a rhythm.

Our senior students have been looking at notation and just last week completed their first peer performances for the year with a focus on fairy tales. What is one of your favourite fairy tales?
