The West Kimberley Primary Interschool Athletics Carnival was held at St. Mary’s Secondary Oval on Friday Septem-

ber 1st. There was a huge turnout of spectators which made the atmosphere something special. The two Derby schools as

well as a combined Peninsular team were competing along with the five local schools in Broome. The Secondary Oval was

once again looking absolutely magnificent thanks to the hard work of our maintenance staff Mr Kim and Mr Murray. A huge

thank you to all of the parents and teachers who helped out on the day, as well as the Year 6 leaders who came across for

the day to help. Broome Little Athletics ran the timing gates once again, which gave us some very accurate times. The con-

test for the coveted West Kimberley Interschool Athletics Shield, presented to the winning team, was the closest competi-

tion that we have ever seen. At the beginning of the relays, with only 4 races left, there were 4 schools that were in conten-

tion to win the Shield! St. Mary’s came agonisingly close to taking the victory but fell 9 points short! I was extremely proud

of the way the team conducted themselves throughout the day and they were very gracious in defeat, applauding Cable

Beach Primary for winning the Shield for an amazing third year in a row. Congratulations to Travis Puertollano for break-

ing 2 records on the day – he ran the Year 4 Boys 100m in 14.14sec and the 200m in 29.52sec. Another St. Mary’s rec-

ord breaker was Zaiazlyn Hart who ran the Year 3 Boys 200m in 30.1sec. Well done to these record breakers, and to the

individual medal winners listed below!

CONGRATULATIONS to the Proud Marys, Champions of the 2017

Dragon Boat Regatta. It was a legendary effort last Saturday that saw our team finally take out the title. After

a 22 year wait, it was the sweetest victory of all. A massive thanks to those who paddled, cheered and supported

us down at Town Beach. GREAT WORK TEAM – YOU DID US PROUD!

David Jacka, OAM, Paralympian, Victorian of the Year finalist, and the first quadriplegic to fly solo around Australia, visited

SMC on Friday to inspire our young people in overcoming life’s

personal challenges. Among his key messages were to set small

goals, persist to achieve them and surround yourself with positive

people who will support your attempts to be successful. He

shared his experience, and explained how having a growth mind-

set was the most important factor which enabled him to success-

fully change his life’s direction, after having a motorcycle accident

at the age of 19. Students got a glimpse of how David, with no

finger function, had to re-learn, even the simplest of tasks, by

opening a mintie, using only the balls of their hands. The stu-

dents asked thoughtful questions, finding out about how David

had to think outside the square by modifying his car, his plane

and his lifestyle, in order to live independently and achieve his goals. David said one of the greatest challenges he still faces is

the attitude of others who say he can’t or won’t be able to do things. He implored the students not to listen to these people , and

instead to ask questions, try new ways and find the people who are willing to help you achieve your goals. He encouraged the

students to believe in themselves, find their passions and not to limit themselves by their own thinking.

St Mary’s College Ministry and Outreach Team, sharing the Joy of the Gospel in our community!

As part of the Year 9 Religious Education Unit on Charity, our students visited Germanus Kent to spend time with

valued members of our community. Students enjoyed hearing stories from long ago and working with them on making

beaded necklaces. Called as disciples to build God’s Kingdom, Year 9, 10 and 11 volunteers will continue to make

weekly visits to Germanus Kent as part of our Christian Outreach.
