I am Yogi
"Yoga continues to shape my life", 23 year old yogi, Angelina Colon, said one
spring afternoon. "...it reminds me to come back to peace and come back to
self.
When asked who she was, Colon said, " I am sacred serpent, sacred
messenger, sacred, sacred, sacred. Still figuring out my purpose, yet I know,
I'm here to deliver a message." Then laughed awkwardly, not believing her

words were enough. "May I try again?" she asked. When the camera was reset
and turned on she restated who she believed she was yet, still
wasn't satisfied with the words she spoke. After asking the
question to herself, she stated several truths. She is Angelina
Colon, a "sacred serpent"(born Scorpio) who lives nomadically
in her van. As a creator and a lover, the most important truth
she knows is that she is still figuring out who "Angelina Colon"
is herself.
The nomad was raised in New York however completed her
200 hours of Kemetic Yoga training in Negril Jamaica. By the end of July 2015
Master Teacher, Yirser Ra Hotep, presented her with a certification of
completion of the Kemetic yoga course.
Books such as, The Complete Yoga Book by James Hewitt, Know Your
Nutrition by Linda Clark, The Serpent Power by Musta Ashby, and many more
keep her in constant union with her practice while she sharpens her skills.
These are examples of tools that aid her in becoming a good practitioner as
well as a Yoga Instructor.

When asked, what was Yoga to her,
Colon responded with on simple
answers "Yoga...Reminds me to come
back to peace; come back to self." Colon
also says that yoga is always shaping
here life, but more specifically when she
is dealing with the every day struggles
life may bring. Although she is still
unfolding herself, Ms. Colon knows one
truth, that there's beauty in the discovery
of self.

Meditation In Inglewood School District
Ronnie-Iman, a 14 year old ninth grader at City Honors Preparatory High School, is not afraid to speak her mind; especially when it comes to her fellow peers. She noticed that many school districts in privileged neighborhoods have meditation and yoga programs, however, these health conscious practices are not currently being granted to her own (Inglewood Unified School District). In her attempt to convince her school to allow quiet time meditation, she wrote an essay

with several great points. Enclosed below is the full essay that she bravely wrote.
Quiet Time In School There are several reasons why students should be allowed to practice mediation at school.
Experts agree that meditation leads to a wide range of positive effects for the body, mind
and behavior. Meditation increases flexibility and strength to the body and increases
intelligence in the mind. Meditation also helps better focus in behavior. In addition
meditation produces a combination of deep physiological rest and mental alertness.
Meditation is to think deeply or focus one’s mind for a period of time in silence or with the
aid of chanting for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation.
“Meditation is twice as effective than any other stress reliever” (Kaplan). Studies show there
are many positive benefits to mediation, which is why students should be allowed to
meditate at school.
There are many benefits students, teachers and schools could get out of Quiet Time /
Transcendental Meditation. The most important benefit meditation could help with is
academics, grades and test scores. Studies show that students who practice meditation
get higher grades and preform better in school. With meditation, students improved by
10% in test scores. Another important benefit meditation could offer is within the area
inappropriate behavior and violence. Studies show schools that use Quiet Time decreased
65% in violent conflict over 2 years and 86% reduction in suspension at schools. “The
Quiet Time Program is the most powerful and effective program I’ve come across. “It is

nourishing to these children and provides them with an immense valuable tool for
life” (Dierke). There are many positive benefits to meditation, which is why students should
be able to practice meditation at school. There are many misconceptions about meditation.
Many people believe that meditation is a religious practice. Many people also believe that
meditation comes from Buddhism. People who are not exposed to meditation think that
chanting while meditating is mandatory. However, “meditation is not a religious practice, it
is a simple mental technique to help one to center the mind and relax the body”, (Chopar).
Chanting while meditating is not mandatory but may be practiced for religious or spiritual
purposes.
In conclusion, there are many benefits students can get out of meditation. First of all, after
meditation students will feel great. With 10-15 minutes of absolute silence studies also
show that students who meditate preform better in school and get higher grades. Academic
wise, meditation benefits show a 10%
improvement in student test scores.
Meditation also helps with behavior in
focusing, concentrating, participation and
effort. Meditation produces more
emotionally intelligent and wiser students of
our generation. Yes, students should be
allowed to practice meditation at school! Be
the change and add meditation to your daily
school schedules.

We talk about (no subject) in particular,
feeling that it's important to see and
accept all forms of art. In our youth
community, there are several talented
individuals, however they are not able to
adequately showcase their talents. We
replace the name misunderstood, struggling
artist, dreamer with UNDERGROUND artist.
Their independent movement is the start of
our today . We embrace the uniqueness
they acquire. Their art is art & is just
as valuable as any other. Creating a
