Die volgende oomblik, ver-tel die sakevrou laat val ek alles uit my hande behalwe my sleutels waaraan my paniek-knoppie is.

Brace for power outageLEPHALALE – The Lephalale municipality issued a warning last week that there will be a power outage on 24 to 26 February from 05:00 until 18:00 for the whole of Lephalale. The purpose of the outage is for commissioning of the Lephalale west substation. Residents are warned to view electricity as live during this time.

SAPS educates learnersMOKOPANE – Learners at Edu-Cor private combined college were visited by the police recently as part of an awareness campaign educating the youth about the dangers of alcohol and drugs.

In 2013 Northern News reported that the proposed Altoostyd would see 5 000 houses constructed in the then near future. In a town with limited avail-able housing and even less prospects for residential development, this was seen as a positive move by the government. Most of the land on the outskirts of town belongs to Exxaro and private farmers - with this in mind Altoostyd is the only viable option for expansion should Exxaro and the private farmers not sell.

The municipality confirmed that they did receive enquiries about the impact that the mine would have on development at Altoostyd but would only be able to provide an official response at a later stage.

Trotski conceded that the groundwater quality in the area where the mine will be built is generally poor. “The main elements that are present in elevated concentrations (chloride and sodium) are characteristic of arid areas while the elevated sulphate is indicative of sulphate minerals present in carbonaceous lithologies and coal seams.”

This is in contrast to the good quality water that was measured in the Mo-kolo dam. Trotski maintained that the poor quality water on the mine’s site was not due to mining from Exxaro or the nearby Matimba power station and that a mine in the area would not affect water quality but in contradiction said that mining by Grootehoek may lead to “deterioration of water quality in the down-stream Mogol river.”

During the first public participation meeting held in August last year the air quality of Lephalale and surrounding areas was one of the main concerns. An air quality test done by Cabanga indicated that the baseline air quality already exceeds limits for dust and that any development contributing to dust will only exacerbate the problem. “We need to reduce dust generation and implement additional dust management by for instance more frequent spraying, misting, wind breaks, vegetating bare areas, paving and dust binding agents.”

MOKOPANE – Municipal workers at the Mogalakwena Municipality said on Monday that they are willing to return to their work-places but are afraid to do so as they claim their safety is at risk. This was said during a brief gathering at the Lekalakala Council Chambers parking area.

Service delivery at the municipality has been suspended since last week Wednesday due to the alleged dismissal of temporary municipal workers that were said to have been replaced by service providers.

Northern News reporter Martie le Grange approached a few municipal officials on Monday, only to find that they refuse to speak about what seemed like a tense situation at the municipality.

Johan Fourie, manager of electrical ser-vices, only mentioned that he was acting on behalf of the acting municipal manager (MM), MM Mthombeni, who was not pres-ent. Fourie, however, approached municipal workers in the parking area and instructed them on behalf of Mthombeni to return back to their workplaces. “We need visible action from the acting MM to guarantee our safety. Fourie cannot be held accountable for our safety. How is he in a position to give such orders?” said Boitumelo Mathibi, secretary of the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU).

While approaching a group of the South African municipal workers union (SAMWU) members who were gathering at another spot on the municipal premises, Northern News' reporter was intimidated by a union member while others encouraged him.

Jabu Mashamaite, chairperson of SAM-WU, called the reporter aside to answered questions. He blamed inadequate bench-marking for the suspension of services and accused the municipality of misusing funds. Mashamaite claimed that he has seen figures that proved service providers replacing tem-porary workers are more expensive despite being told that the municipality cannot afford temporary workers. He denied allegations of intimidation and added the union members are not striking, but rather 'sitting in'.

Employees say it is a shame that neither the acting MM nor the Mayor is present to resolve their issues. “It is clear that service delivery is not their number one priority,” concluded Mashamaite.

The municipality’s head of communica-tions, Malesela Selokela, has not been avail-able for comment.

Labour dispute continues for a second week

Cabanga also indicated that they have not contacted the current land owners about sell-ing their property yet.
