Summative:Accountability Measure

Benchmark assessments:Designed to measure scientific practices and cross‐cutting concepts through performance tasks and/or 

problem‐based response or scenario items. 

Formative Assessment: Measuring key ideas defined in NGSS including scientific practices, content 

and/or cross‐cutting concepts.  Informs pedagogy and curriculum decisions at the local and collectively at the state level (Science Coalition).

Foundation of knowledge and practice, monitored regularly (daily/weekly)

Measure of knowledge and practice expectation of experience in classroom

Formative Assessment: Short diagnostic assessments aligned with the content and theory (practices/pedagogy) defined by the NGSS.  Requires multiple formats and professional development aligned with curriculum and standards.  Student work used in PLC settings to address shortcomings in curriculum and classroom teaching strategies for the betterment of our overall science instruction at the classroom, local and state level depending on professional development focus.

As required by the new assessment system legislation Assembly Bill (AB) 484, the California Department of Education (CDE) is required to make recommendations to the State Board of Education (SBE) regarding science assessments based on the NGSS. In order to develop these recommendations, the CDE has to consult with stakeholders regarding the grade level and the type of assessment. To start the process leading to the recommendations, we are working with our testing contractor, ETS, to conduct the stakeholder meetings.
