    Transition to NGN: First wave

Growth of Internet and other IP-based networks withtheir

requirements for bandwidth and capacity has driven rapidinnovation in telecommunication access and transport

ITU-T definition of NGN (Feb 2004)

A Next Generation Network (NGN) is a packet-based

networkable to provide services including Telecommunications

Servicesand able to make use ofmultiple broadband, QoS-

enabledtransport technologies and in which service-related

    functionsare independent from underlying transport-related

technologies. It offers unrestricted access by users to different serviceproviders. It supports generalized mobility which will

    allow

consistent and ubiquitous provision of services to users.

    Fundamental characteristics of NGN

    * Packet-based transfer

Separation of control functions among bearercapabilities, call/session, and application/ service

Decoupling of service provision from network, and provision of open interfaces

Support for a wide range of services, applications andmechanisms based on service building blocks(including real time/ streaming/ non-real timeservices and multi-media, Triple- play)

Broadband capabilities with end-to-end QoS andtransparency

Inter working with legacy networks via open interfaces Generalized mobility support

Unrestricted access by users to different serviceproviders

    Next Generation Network Plane andFunctions

Monolithic networks evolve towards a layered NGN architecture withopen interfaces.

Application Plane enables theprovisioning of services and

provides the control and logicfor the execution of services

    Control Plane controls the

Transport Plane is responsiblefor the transport of media and

    signaling messagesManagement Plane covers network

    Key drivers of NGNdevelopment

Short Term objective:Create new revenue possibilities

Removal of boundaries between voice anddata opens the way to new kind ofservices

Can be realized relatively quickly with

    limited investments

    Long Term objective:Realize cost savings

    Simpler network More efficient network

    Cheaper network components

Full benefit only realized when all separatenetworks have fully migrated towards tothe target solution
