From the PrincipalWelcome back to term 3, I hope you all had a safe and enjoyable holiday. You will have noticedan incredible number of events and activities on the agenda for this term. As well as being goodfun they are all great learning experiences for our students so please make sure to read the notes, sign the forms and pay your activity account.

It is fantastic to see so many of our students have started the term in school uniform, it looks

fabulous. Wearing school uniform reflects a sense of pride in our school, students feel moreprofessional and research show it improves behaviour. Many educators believe that students canbecome distracted by fashion trends and status symbol clothing. Therefore, when all students aredressed in regulation uniforms, there is less focus on fashion in the classroom and more focus onlearning. Please encourage you child to be on time and in school uniform every day.

During the holidays I was doing some reading on sibling rivalry and came across the followinginformation, it rung true with me and I thought that Id share.

Bill Cosby once said that parents arent interested in justice when their children fight; they just want peace. Sooften we go to the child who will most likely listen and enlist their help to make peace.Just give it back. I know he shouldnt have taken it but I just cant stand the fighting! However, smart parents continuously coach their children in the art of resolving sibling conflict peacefully, or atleast with a minimum of noise and disruption.

Here are some conflict resolution tricks to teach your kids:1. Encourage them to read their siblings so they can avoid negative situations. This is all about avoidance andstopping fights before they start.2. Teach children how to set boundaries. You can come into my room but you have to stay out of my toycupboard. Ok?3. Praise problem-solving. Make a fuss when they work things out peacefully whether its compromising, takingturns or one child just giving way.4. Help children identify the triggers for getting upset themselves and also when their sibling is likely to losetheir cool. We all have hot buttons that when pressed will trigger an over-reaction. Help kids work out their hotbuttons.5. Reinforce with kids that they need to regulate their responses when a sibling presses their hot buttons. Kidsdont have to fight, argue, yell or whatever when a sibling gets up their nose. Give kids alternatives to theirwar-like responses. Go to your room if he continues to annoy you.6. Teach respect. Respectful treatment is at the heart of civil relationships. Keep reminding kids to treat eachother with respect; stick to dignified behaviours and also to stay within the rules of fair play.7. Ensure restitution. Perhaps the biggest lesson kids can learn is to restore a relationship after conflict. How

can you fix this?is question many kids need to hear.Parenting should reflect real life as much as possible. In the world outside families, people dont always like eachother but they do need to get on with each other. These lessons about getting on are best learned in your familyas a child.

Teaching our children these tricks will help both at home and at school.

Talking parenting, our Parent Library has arrived. There are some fabulous books from respectedexperts. Please have a look at the notice board where all of our newest titles are displayed. Thebooks are for borrowing and are located in the meeting room in the front office. You are mostwelcome to come andperuse.

Welcome back to term 3. The children have finished their second 3 dayweek and despite a few hiccups we have come through relativelyunscathed. Last week we borrowed books from the library for the firsttime and met Mrs Downs. It was all rather exciting and we cant wait to goagain.

Term 3 is going to be an extremely busy one for Room 5 and the first twoweeks have set the pace. The students are focusing on instructional lan-

guage in activities such as leading their blindfolded partner up the hill andthrough the playground with only words to guide them. In Science we havestarted looking at the properties of different materials and how we usethem in the world. The students have to use a variety of materials to helpan egg in a box survive a drop of over a metre. The class reward systemthat Azi is showing matches both our Maths and Society and Environmenttasks as we look at the different ways to grow and manage money.

    Room 4 -Rochelle Reeves

Term 3 has started with an energetic bang. Each morning we are running laps of the oval to get fit forthe Fun Run in a few weeks time. We really enjoyed our NAIDOC celebrations very much and resultedin some creative book writing. The authors and guest speakers also inspired us to retell the story ofDerbal Yaragan and illustrate our own version of the legend. Our theme this term is Water Works andwe are looking forward to learning how water affects how we live and the environment around us.

    Art -Margie Campbell

    NAIDOC WEEK Authors and Illustrators

We were very lucky to have Ron Bradfield, Norma MacDonald and Josie Boyle present their storytelling skills to the

children at North Freo for our Naidoc Celebrations. The guests then joined the children in class to make their own

    books.

Norma MacDonald is an internationally famous artist and has now written and illustrated her own books. Josie is a

singer, songwriter, and author of childrens books. Both of the women read their books to the children. Thank you to

Rob and Magabala Books in Broome for assisting me with this project. A special thank you also to Mrs Reeves who was

a super help to me on the day and to Doug Thompson for his magnificent story telling on The Shores of the Swan.

The art students at North Fremantle had their Henry Rousseau pictures taking

to a meeting of art teachers from the Fremantle region. The teachers were

really impressed with the skills and ideas that our students produced. Some of

the finished pieces are showcased here.

mLearning Parent Information Session Friday 9th August 8.45-9.30.This year we began a working partnership with the University of Notre Dame to develop opportunities toexplore new software, share knowledge and provide learning experiences for both our students.

Last Semester, we hosted two groups of Education students who worked with Miss Lizzie and Ms. Reeves'classes. This information session will be an opportunity to showcase the work created in these classes inaddition to providing parents with some up to date information regarding the use of mLearning for thepurposes ofearly childhoodeducation. All parents are welcome although it will be particularly relevant forparents of children in K-2 classes. If you would like to attend, please come and see Miss Lizzie so we canhave an indication of numbers.
