July marks the beginning of summer vacation, and this year, our
mission kicked off the summer with our annual Parish Picnic. Divya
Mamootil takes us through the events of the fun-filled day in her article.
One of the key events that took place this month was the Regional
Conference in Toronto on July 26 & 27. Three missions from the mid-
West region participated in this conference: Toronto, Detroit, and
Chicago, as well as Rev. Fr. Thomas Puthupparampil from the
Edmonton mission. It was a blessed event and a wonderful opportunity
for our families to come together in the presence of our Lord as a
unified community and gain more knowledge about familial and peer
relationships. Jonathan Mani talks more about our experiences at the
Regional Conference, and goes into detail about the different subjects
and themes we discussed. We also get an interesting look into the life of
the Saint of the Month, St. Dominic, by Alexi Joseph. During our
summer vacation, it is important to relax, have fun, and spend time with
our friends and family. It is also important to remember that we need to
live like Christ, and model ourselves and our behaviour like Him. May
God bless you all!

2014 Annual Parish Picnic
This year, St. Mary’s Malankara Catholic Church held our annual Parish Picnic on
July 5th 2014 at Richard’s Memorial Park in Mississauga. We were blessed to have the
presence of our vicar Fr. John Kuriakose, and majority of the families. It was a wonderful
experience to spend time together as a community outside of our usual church activities
amidst the bright sunshine and gentle breeze from the lake. For lunch we had traditional
Kerala food such as kappa and mean curry, and appam and chicken curry. Following lunch,
the MCYM and Sunday School teachers organized several games and activities for the
children to enjoy. The kids were pleased to participate in games such as musical chairs,
three-legged race, candy picking, and water balloon fights. The adults also enjoyed
themselves with bouts of card games, volleyball, cricket, tug-of-war and singing
Anthakshari in a large circle. The festivities concluded with a BBQ dinner and sea of
smiles on everyone’s faces. It was a fantastic time to be in fellowship and communion with
one another and allowed us to renew and strengthen the bonds we have with each other.
May the Almighty Father continue to shower his abundant blessings and graces upon this
community.

Saint of the Month: St. Dominic
St. Dominic was the son of
Felix Guzman and Jane of Aza and was
born in the year 1170 at Calaruega, Spain.
He studied at the University of Palencia
where he spent six years to the arts and
four to theology. While he was still study-
ing in Palencia, a great famine struck the
land. Out of his great generosity, he gave
away all his money and sold all his
clothes, furniture, and even his books to
feed the hungry. When men questioned
him about his actions, he said, "Would you
have me study off these dead skins' when
men are dying of hunger?” When he was
about twenty five he completed his studies
and joined the Canons Regular of the ca-
thedral of Osma, and soon afterward he
became ordained as a priest. Later on, he
went on to become the superior of the
chapter.
In 1215, Dominic established him-
self with six followers in a house given by
Peter Seila, a rich resident of Toulouse. He
disciplined himself and his companions to
the monastic rules of prayer and penance,
and Bishop Foulques gave them written
authority to preach throughout Toulouse.
In the same year Dominic and Foulques
went to Rome to secure the approval of
Pope Innocent III. Dominic went to Rome
again a year later, and was finally given
authority in December of 1216 by the new
Pope, Honorius III, for an order to be
named "The Order of Preachers".
When he reached the con-
vent of St. Nicholas at Bologna in Italy, he
had a fever so he got the monks to lay him
on some sacking stretched upon the
ground. St. Dominic died at noon on Au-
gust 6th of 1221. He was canonized in
1234 and he is the patron saint of astrono-
mers. His feast day is celebrated on Au-
gust 8th.

Our first Midwest regional family convention was held at Seneca College in Toronto
from Saturday, July 26th to the 27th. The Midwest Region comprises of churches from Detroit,
Chicago, Edmonton and Toronto and about 200 people attended the event. Presiding over the
conference was His Excellency Dr. Thomas Mar Eusebius. The conference was split into
adult, youth and children’s seminars.
The first seminar for the youth was held by Rev. Fr. Mario Salvadori. In it, he talked
about the relationship between a man and a woman, specifically, between teenagers. He talked
about common pitfalls that teenagers fall into such as compromising their faith to fit in and
prioritizing different relationships. It is often true that the youth (and some adults) have a very
different interpretation of Jesus. Most see Him as a nice man who was able to change people
because he was well liked by everyone. Fr. Mario described Jesus as a man who was able to
change people not because he was a nice person, but because he had boldness of faith. Fr.
Mario challenged all youth to be the same; to have faith that was relentless and
uncompromising, despite our circumstances. He went on to emphasize that relationships in
the context of dating and such should not be the main priorities in our lives, as God, our
families and our church comes first. Fr. Mario’s blunt, loud and flamboyant speaking style
come as a shock to most of youth but nonetheless, he connected with everyone on a topic we
all had doubt in.
Suresh Dominic, leader of Gethsemane Youth Ministries, continued on with the next
seminar. He talked about making wise choices in light of our faith. He emphasized that the
life of a teenager can be filled with difficult choices and
various temptations and that we must always be cautious of the
decisions we make. A strong faith background is one that will
keep us on the right path.
Our last session was a discussion facilitated by Binu
Abraham from the Chicago mission. During the discussion we
elaborated on the points mentioned in our previous talks as
well as talked about celebrating our faith as opposed to just
living it.
From here, we entered into our cultural programs which
consisted of dances, skits and songs. Very rarely do all the
missions get to celebrate their faith communally in such a way so it was an enjoyable event.
The conference ended Sunday afternoon with Holy Qurbono. All in all, the
Family Conference was a rewarding experience for the youth. It is always a joyous occasion
when all the youth of the Malankara Midwest regions come together and grow spiritually. It is
always a blessing to grow as a community and we look forward in the years to come.
