Many thanks to the members for their patience and big thanks to Trevor Newdick for the work and time that he has put into it. Chairman’s Report

Hello fellow bowlers

Depending on when Don Hamilton forwards the newsletter to the members, I could be in the

USA with fellow bowlers Mary Smith, John Fealy, Ray Shaw and my son David or on the way

home.

Hopefully the covered green has been repaired and all is working to our satisfaction. Please let

me know if it isn’t and I will stay away a bit longer. Many thanks to the members for their

patience and big thanks to Trevor Newdick for the work and time that he has put into it. With

repairing the surface, replacing the carpet & underfelt and improving the drainage, we will

have a facility that will need no major maintenance for at least 10-15 years.

Our competitions are continuing with Bayside and Poincana closing and Pennants (Men) starting up soon. The ladies

Pennants season will have already started. I wish all the competitors good luck and success.

It is less than 3 months until we hold our AGM. This is the time to consider running for a position on the Board

and/or one of the committees. Also, now is a good time to start preparing any motions that you wish to lodge.

See you on the green. Geoff Devencorn

Ladies President

Hi all,

Well as I sit and write this piece for the Newsletter, our undercover green is in the

process of being refurbished. What a big job it is. Can't wait to have a game of bowls on

it.

Some of our ladies have been involved in the following competitions:

Women's District Sides Championships 2014

Chris Baxter, Debbie Logan, Glenys Read, Darilyn Spring are all in the Gateway Side.

These girls played on the 7th to 10th May at the Gold Coast. They won the Division 2 Flag.

Queensland State Women's Fours Championship

Chris Baxter, Cathy Lewis, Debbie Logan, Glenys Read represented Mt. Gravatt and finished 3rd place in

the State. This competition was also played in May after the District Games.

Club Championships 2014

Championship Singles was won by Debbie Logan with Margie Wells runner-up.

B Singles was won by Anna Kung with Di Girvan runner-up

Championship Pairs was won by Debbie Logan and Chris Baxter with Margie Wells and Gail Pratt runners-

up

Also this week we begin the Pennant Season, so good luck to all girls in Divisions 1, 2, and 3.

Our social bowlers have been have quite a lot of fun by all the laughter on the rinks, and the Financial days

have been well attended by the various visiting clubs.

I would like to wish everyone happy bowling and I am sure like me will enjoy playing on the new carpet

when it is ready.

Steph Porter

Ladies President.

Men’s President Report

Well it is newsletter time again, and fortunately I can now say work has commenced

to fix our carpet green.

Once again I have to thank the volunteers (Dad's Army) who worked so hard in

removing the old carpet and underlay in preparation for the contractors to start work.

Also I would like to thank the ladies section who kindly provided lunch for all the

workers; a gesture appreciated by all. It won't be long and we will all enjoy the

benefits of all the hard work by having a first class artificial surface to play on.

Also, to those people who in the middle of Thursday afternoon bowls helped bring in the large rolls of

carpet, a big Thank-You. Don't forget we are always looking to increase the numbers of volunteers, please

give consideration to what you may be able to do the help our Club.

With Poinciana and Bayside Challenge competitions drawing to a close, congratulations to all who

participated. You have done us proud.

Pennants commence in July, and we will have five teams competing (Division 2, 3, 5, 7, 8). To all who are

going to represent us, we wish you every success and hope you bring home the flag.

Happy Bowling to you all,

Pat McLaughlin

Bowls Club Members Newsletter

June 2014

Dear Bowlers,

The months are flying by and winter is upon us…. apparently. The change in season may

well signal a few changes around the place so here is what’s going on in each department:

Bistro/Dining

Birthday vouchers are now valid on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday night. Our Kitchen Crew led by Wayne have been

consistently serving good quality meals and diner numbers are increasing. If you haven’t been down for dinner for a

while give us a try.

Keen followers of the menu will have noticed a couple of newer specials migrate their way onto the permanent

menu. The Grilled Cajun Chicken and Grilled Pork Medallion have both been popular specials and are now “full

timers”. Whilst braised Lamb shanks are sure to make a special appearance as the weather continues to cool.

In general whilst I have been hanging off as long as possible I’m afraid to say some price rises are going to be

implemented to certain dishes. We have managed to avoid any increases for over 12 months unfortunately this

could not last forever.

Carson Room

The Carson room is attracting plenty of seminars, parties and various events. Special thanks must go to the Lady

members for allowing us to run some Tuesday events too.

These events do sometimes cause a shortage of parking and your patience and understanding is appreciated. On this

note you may be happy to hear the large monthly Saturday seminar has moved on to a larger venue. This event had

grown into a monster causing issues with car parking and lunch order delays. Not to mention a few less hairs on my

already barren head.

Again your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated.

Bar/Gaming

Some changes to the beer taps may be on the horizon, although I don’t have any firm information to pass on yet. I

will let you know as soon as I have confirmation of what changes are coming.

New gaming machines? I have been promised some newer machines from our big brother. However again I don’t

have any firm information on when or which machines are coming or going.

Happy Bowling

PREMIER SEVEN’S 2014

CONGRATULATIONS CONGRATULATIONS CONGRATULATIONS.

The finals of Premier Sevens Division 5 were played at Pine Rivers Bowls Club on Saturday 24

May 2014.

Mt. Gravatt played Beaudesert in one semi-final and was successful 2 rinks to 1.

Singles. Reg Walls had start slow made up a lot of ground but could not finish it off. But a good

effort.

Michael Geronimos also played singles

Pairs. Peter James / Mal Ferguson continued on their winning way 22 / 16.

Fours. Neil Longhurst, Ron Walton, Bryan Martin, Bruce Black also had another good win 26 / 10

We then had to play North Ipswich who beat Helensvale.

The Grand final commenced at 1.45 p.m. on the grass which was running about 13.5/ 15.0 Seconds.

Singles. Reg Walls Again had stiff opposition and really had to keep his mind on the job. Even though Reg lost he was

a credit on and off the greens. WELL PLAYED REG. and MICHAEL

Pairs. Peter James / Mal Ferguson. What can I say about the pairs combination. 11 Games for 11 WINS. The other

member of the pairs was Tony Fuller. These 3 players combined with each other and this was the result.

GREAT TO HAVE PETER, MAL, and TONY IN THIS FORM OF THE COMPETITION.

Fours. Neil Longhurst, Bill Crewe, Bryan Martin, Bruce Black. Hopes were high as this team had won all 10 games

with John Fealy, Michael Geronimos, Ron Walton, and Mal Ferguson also playing. One end to play 17 / 18 down.

Leads played one down, Seconds after two bowls each one up. After next two bowls still up. Thirds two bowls each

one down. Did the skip feel any pressure, Must ask him some time. Skips first bowl just short, good second shot.

Opposing skip draws second shot. Have to promote the short bowl to get a draw. Narrow, lost 17 / 22. This was the

fours only loss, but again to all members it was a credit having you in the fours.

TO LOSE ONE GAME THROUGHOUT IS A TREMENDOUS EFFORT FROM ALL PLAYERS.NAMELY, NEIL, BILL, RON .JOHN,

MICHAEL, MAL, BRYAN, BRUCE

For this squad of 11 players it was a credit to represent Mt Gravatt and through their effort the club received

$1,600.00.

This success plus doing so well in last year’s pennants (1 pennant 2 finalists 1 lost semi-final) from 5 divisions Mt

Gravatt should be proud of the bowlers we have.

GO MT. GRAVATT IN 2014 PENNANTS AND ALL OTHER COMPETITIONS IN 2015

Bruce Black.

Selector.

Reg Walls provided this detail as well as the photo which complements Bruce’s comprehensive report above. Thanks

to you both. Well done

“Mt Gravatt Bowls Club Division 5 Premier 7s competed in the final four play off on Saturday 24th May. The games

were played at Pine Rivers Bowls Club.

In the first round semi final Mt Gravatt 2 rinks d Beaudesert, 1 rink. In the final played the same afternoon North

Ipswich 2 rinks d Mt Gravatt 1 rink. Both games were hard fought and displayed the overall evenness of the three

teams”. A total of 44 teams participated in Division 5 and to be runner up out of that number is something our Club

should be proud of.”

The names in the photo as follows; Back row; Bill Crewe, Malcolm Ferguson, Neil Longhurst, Ron Walton.

Front row; Bryan Martin, Bruce Black, Peter James, Reg Walls.

Others who played throughout the season and absent from the photo, John Fealy, Michael Geronimos and Tony

Fuller.

Club Chat

Congratulations to Bill and Joy Crewe who celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss

last April. What a great effort.

Gladys Holman and Mary Smith have enjoyed a cruise to Singapore aboard the

Queen Mary. Mary has been well bitten by the travel bug and is currently touring

the Eastern coast of Canada and America taking in Niagara Falls and New York.

She then plans to meet up with Ray Shaw Geoff and David Devencorn and John

Fealy. If I have left somebody out, I apologise.

Helen and David Black welcomed the eagerly awaited birth of grand-daughter

Charlotte Ruby.

Our esteemed President Pat McLaughlin also welcomed a great grand-daughter. Congratulations to both

families.

Alan and Dianne Girvan spent a relaxing few weeks travelling the north coast of New South Wales. Both

Alan and Di are looking very relaxed.

On a sadder note our condolences go to long time member Lyn Anderson on the death of her daughter in

Canberra last week.

If any member has an exciting event about to happen, please let me know so that we can all share in the

excitement with you.

Cheers for now, LORNA

Business Manager’s Report

Sponsorship

We have seen two changes of ownership during the month of May.

. O’Neills Business Lawyers changed hands on 8th May with Kerry O’Neill selling

his practice to Marie Sheehy and Luke Giribon. Many thanks to Kerry for his

support over the last few years both by way of sponsorship and arranging teams for the sponsors’ bowls evenings.

Best wishes to Marie and Luke with the practice into the future. I can now also report that they have agreed to

continue with the sponsorship and advertising sign which have been in place now for a few years. Our thanks to them

for their continued support.”

. Fred Fern Bowls Centre has been sold effective 1st June. Many thanks to John and Sue Finlayson for their support

by way of sponsorship and participation in the sponsors’ bowls evenings over the past three years. I will be meeting

with the new owners in mid June after they have settled in.

Following discussions with the Ladies, sponsorship over the pennant period will not occur. The three sponsors who

were to sponsor days in June have been happy to transfer their support to days later in the year. Thank you to those

people involved.

Friday Night Raffles

The raffles are doing quite well however more people are required to sell tickets. You are required from 6.00 pm

until 7.15 pm on a Friday night and sell in pairs. It is quite a pleasant task with many regular diners attending who are

expecting to purchase tickets. The more people we have on the roster means less attendances by everyone

concerned. Please contact me on 0438 193551 or speak with me at the Club if you are interested.
