Since 1997, the Chamber’s Political Action Committee (PAC) has taken a leading role in engaging the East Metro business community in local elections. As a separate legal entity of the Chamber, the PAC is organized to advance the Chamber’s mission by providing support to pro-business candidates running for office.
But why should business leaders care about the PAC’s priorities, and how does political engagement impact your business? We address these questions and explain why getting involved matters in this month’s feature story.
PACs emerge during World War IIPolitical Action Committees can be traced back as early as the 1940s during the labor movement in the United States. During World War II, Congress prohibited the resources of organized labor from being used for political purposes. In response, the Congress of Industrial Organizations created a separate political fund to receive and spend voluntary contributions. Since that first official PAC was formed in 1944, roughly 3,800 PACs have been formed by organizations across the country.
How it worksThe Chamber’s PAC is lead by a volunteer Board that works on a host of activities to engage the East Metro business community in local and state elections. In the past, the PAC

has facilitated televised mayoral debates, hosted fundraisers in support of pro-business candidates, and provided volunteer work on select city council, county board and state legislative races.
These activities provide business of all sizes—from the three-person shop to the global corporation—the opportunity to have a voice in the electoral process.
“You have to be involved if you want your message to be heard and have an active say in what’s going on,” said John Regal, 2010 Chair of the Chamber’s PAC. “Having a strong voice in local elections allows the Chamber to impact the local business climate.”
Why it mattersEnhancing the vitality of the East Metro region requires that the business community have a say in local and state government policy. It’s crucial that business interests are represented while public policy is being developed by officials who understand the issues. Supporting the Chamber’s PAC is one of the best ways to help ensure candidates who support business are elected to office.
In addition, PACs are legally able to make larger contributions to candidates than private individuals. A contribution from the Chamber’s PAC delivers a message along with the money—that this group collectively makes contribution decisions according to the best interests and priorities of the East Metro business community.
The Chamber’s PAC allows you to be engaged in political affairs without taking time away from your business.
How to get involved The best way to get involved and voice your views on business issues is to show up. On September 16, 2010, the PAC is hosting a boat cruise event on the Mississippi River that will feature candidates running for office in the East Metro. Just 45 days before the upcoming election, this will be a great opportunity to speak with candidates and learn where they stand on business issues. Attendees also will have an opportunity to meet Matt Kramer, the Chamber’s new president. Proceeds from the event will generate funds to support business-friendly candidates and issues.
