Dear Parents and Guardians, The AGM for the Larrakeyah Primary School Board was held on Wednesday 13th March. Many thanks to parents and staff who attended. The School Board consists of parent members and teacher representatives. Thank you to those who expressed an interest in being a member of the School Board. Congratulations to our 2019 board members – Zeynep Yaltirakli(Chairperson), Ridwanul Hoque (Secretary), Jason Tutty (Treasurer), Chad Banfield, Rachita Jain (Teacher rep), Rick Collister (Teacher rep). We all look forward to working together to improve outcomes for students whilst focussing on the strategic direction of the school. Thank you to the parents who were on the school board last year and volunteered their time and gave valuable support to the school. Thank you to Rachita Jain and Karen Bouhoris. A special thanks to Kathy Ganley who was the board chairperson. Whilst the School Board focuses on the school’s strategic direction, there are also several committees in which parents can become involved as well. We will be finalising subcommittees at the next Board meeting and providing further information. Last week we celebrated Harmony Day. All students participated in Harmony Day activities and had the opportunity to wear national costume or orange clothing. Harmony Day is a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity and it was also wonderful to celebrate the diversity within our own school. It is a concern that some children are arriving at school very early – some almost an hour before school commences. School commences at 8.15am. Parents need to be aware that supervision is provided from 8am. School finishes at 2.45pm and parents are responsible for making arrangements for their child’s supervision after school. If you are collecting your child from school, please be punctual. Office staff will follow up with parents if students are still waiting after the duty supervision at 3pm finishes in the afternoons. Students are not permitted to be playing in the school grounds when they are dismissed unless they are supervised by a parent. We have an OSHC program operating after school and if parents require care for their child after school hours, please contact 89414521 or 0438813211. Dear Parents and Guardians,

on the school board last year and volunteered their time and gave valuable support

to the school. Thank you to Rachita Jain and Karen Bouhoris. A special thanks to

Last week we celebrated Harmony Day. All students participated in Harmony Day

activities and had the opportunity to wear national costume or orange clothing.

Harmony Day is a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity and it was also wonderful to

NEWS FROM DSTA

Students in DKC last week got creative making

chickens in a basket, fun and feathers were

everywhere.

This week we will be making some giant poppies for our

ANZAC Assembly display at the start of next Term. But will

finish off this term with some more Easter activities.

Defence Kids Club, lunchtime Wednesdays, room 5 for

some dancing, friends and fun.

A few students are coming forward to let me know their

mum or dad are away. Please inform me and your teacher as this can sometimes change

a child’s behaviours at school or leave them more sensitive than usual. If you send the

away parents email address with a date of return there are fun activities to help support

your child during these times. I also would encourage you to contact the Defence Family

Helpline on 1800 624 608 and register for Absent Partner Support and request a bear and

book pack to be sent to the kids. You may also be interested in the KidSMART workshops

DCO will be running on the 15 and 16 April at your local Community Houses.

If you are interested in having a medallion presentation for your child for being brave while

a parent was away on deployment please see me for more information.

The weather is a bit topsy-turvey and so too are some of the children’s moods as we come

to the end of a very busy first term. Please continue the great efforts of encouraging good

sleep routines, hydration and healthy eating to help keep students fuelled up for busy days

of learning and creativity.

Please contact me if you have any concerns with how your child has settled in this term or

if you are having any educational, friendship or resilience issues that require a bit of support

before the end of term.

If anyone has old or torn military cam uniforms please donate them for craft activities and

wreath making, thanks.

ANZAC Day isn’t very far away and neither is our ANZAC Day Assembly 24 April, so if you

have any ideas, decorations or special skills that you could contribute, or would like to

volunteer, please let me know as we are looking for ceremonial assistance like flag raisers,

buglers, etc. to make our 2019 ANZAC Day Assembly special. Last year we were the NT

runner up for the ANZAC Day School Awards and a special mention of our ‘walk with our

soldiers’ was mentioned, so we want to grow this into something even more special. So if

you have a special ANZAC, serving member past or present, to add to our photo plaque

display email me their photo and basic details including student’s name.

Please discuss crossing the road safely

with your children on a regular basis.

Remember to include the message

below.

Stop – Stop at the kerb. Make sure it is

safe to cross

Look – Look to your right and then to

the left. Can you see any traffic?

Listen – Listen carefully with your ears.

Can you hear any traffic?

Think – Think with your brain. Is it safe

to cross?

Walk – Walk straight across. Don't run.

Keep looking and listening for traffic

as you cross.

ANZAC Commemoration

Ceremony

Our ANZAC Day commemoration ceremony is on

Wednesday 24th April and we would like as many

people to be involved as possible.

We have so many proud families at Larrakeyah with

military history, so if you have a special ANZAC, a past or

current serving member, who you would like to have

included in our lawn display, please email a photo (or

copy) to Jodie DSM [email protected] and

provide details of service and the names of the children

to go on the plaque in our ‘Walk with Our Special

ANZACS’. This display keeps the memory of those that

have sacrificed and contributed, both in the past and

today, relevant and appreciated. The kids are very

proud too, to be able to lay a poppy on someone that

is part of them and their own family history.
