It promises to be another busy and exciting term highlighted by the Senior Production, Matariki Breakfast, discos, Rock-da-House, Mid Winter Swim, visiting performers, BOT elections, interschool sports tournaments, science week and lots more! PLAYGROUND AUDIT A report has been completed for us by the Nelson Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour team following an audit and review of our playground climate. Their findings concluded a general atmosphere and tone that was positive. Students were happy, active and interacting positively with each other. Specifically - Big and junior adventure playground well used with lots of cooperative play observed. - Library is well run and used at lunchtime. - Good use of peer mediators - Plenty of P.E. gear available and well used. - Excellent playground supervision by teachers and teacher aides. The incidence of negative behaviour was very low and isolated. The report also made suggestions for making a good playground even better. This term we are introducing more lunchtime play options. The full report can be found on our website. - Paul Drummond NOISE CREW Congratulations and thank you to the group of students who were the noise crew at last week’s Giants game. You obviously helped them win in an exciting and close game! I have received positive comments on your behaviour. You represented us well! - Paul Drummond On Saturday the 11 th of May the Softball and T-Ball teams went to the Giants basketball game against the Wellington Saints. We were the noise crew, we had special singlets that we got to wear for the night with noise crew on them. We took a bus to Trafalgar Stadium. We saw Erin Simpson and got interviewed by her. The Giants were down by fifteen points but then they caught up. With ten seconds left the Giants were down by one point, then the Giants got a slam dunk which took down the hoop. There was 3 seconds left and the Saints didn’t get another goal. The final score was 89 –88 to the Giants. - Zane and Ben “I Can - I Will” 69 Muritai Street Phone (03) 548 6167 Fax (03) 548 6761 Tahunanui E-mail [email protected] “Ka taea - ka tutuki” ANZAC DAY To commemorate ANZAC Day, Mr Beyer-Rieger visited our school and explained what ANZAC Day was all about. It was fun getting dressed up. I was really nervous when I got up in front of the seniors. When I heard that Mrs Curnow chose me I was shocked. I would like to thank her and also Joe for giving me that experience. I would like to say I feel sorry for all those lives that were lost at Gallipoli and other battles and wars in the past and present. I also lost a few ancestors in those battles. Thank you Mr Beyer-Rieger for coming to our school. - Jed Room 9 DONATION OF HOCKEY STICKS On Wednesday 17 April Dianne Proudfoot (my nana) from Nelson Hockey came to school to present us with 30 hockey sticks and 30 hockey balls. I felt embarrassed but proud because she is a member of my family. - Jonti Room 10 LIBRARY NEWS Term 1 librarian awards. Congratulations to the following librarians who received Distinction Awards: Zane - for excellent service and high attendance as a librarian and assistant. Nikita - for excellent service and high attendance as an assistant librarian. Bronze Excellence Award - Abbie, Jeanine and Ollie. Silver Excellence Award - Robbie. Gold Award - Congratulations and thanks to Nathaniel. A special thanks to Luke Dell of Guilded Edge (a parent of the school) who has kindly donated a Native Beech and Glass frame for a Jane Evans poster! It will be on display in our school library for all to read and appreciate. - Mrs Climo and Mrs Trewavas FOUNDERS VISIT - ‘Lest We Forget’ On Tuesday 16 April, Room 7 went to Founders Park to see what it was like in the blitz. The blitz was when the Germans bombed England in WWII. First of all we went to a room where we had to crack some codes. Some of them were very hard and some were easy. For example the hardest one was the pin point. There was a newspaper and above some of the letters there were tiny holes and you had to hold it up to the light to see the message. After this activity we split up into 4 groups. We went into the shop keepers store, one of the 4 stations. All of the lights kept going dim and there was no running water. There were bomb shelters and large amounts of people had to stay in them for days. People sometimes starved because they did not have enough food or water in the shelter. Thank you to the many parents who provided transport. - Room 7 Term 2 Librarians Ivy, Seini, Nikita, Matthew, Jacob H, Jacob F, Zehn (reserve), Tegan, Komal, Kayla, Ashley, Samantha, Maddison, Jonti, Robbie (reserve), Chavawn, Jesse, Cassidy, Emma, Zara, Jacqui, Zack D.J. THE GREAT WHITE BUTTERFLY The Great white Butterfly was first found in 2010 in a Nelson garden. The Great White Butterfly’s caterpillars are yellow with a black head and the eggs are yellow. You can tell a Great White butterfly from its distinctive black tipped wings. Its pupae turn from green with grey spikes to yellow with grey spikes. Their eggs are in clusters from 30 to 100.

The Great White Butterfly came from Europe. The great White Butterfly threatens our native plants and it eats our brassicas that we grow in our garden. The butterfly’s full grown caterpillars can reach the size of 5cm. We are trying to eradicate the Great White Butterfly.

Rooms 5 and 6 found some of these caterpillars in the school garden. We phoned the hotline and the eradication team came to see if there were anymore. - Yara Room 5

SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT Q. What did Cinderella say when her photos did not show up? A. Someday my prints will come!

Q. Why does it take longer in softball to run from second to third base than it does from first to second? A. Because you have a short stop between second and third! Q. Why did Sally give up ballet lessons? A. Because they were too too difficult? CIVIL DEFENCE EMERGENCIES

In the event of a Civil Defence Emergency being called prior to 8.00am, the Board Chair and the Principal will make the decision to close the school. If it is called after 8.00am the school will stay open and staff will continue in their professional capacity.

Please follow the advice of the Civil Defence in the case of an emergency. The Suburban Club is the C.D. Headquarters but Tahunanui School may be called to act as a C.D. area. Students will only be sent home in the company of a parent or other adult nominated by par-ents as an emergency contact. A list will be kept of students collected and by whom, including date and time. Parents/Caregivers are to sign students out. Teachers are expected to remain with their classes until all students have been collected, or until advised by the Principal that they may leave. (Are your contact details on record in the school office up to date?)

Looking after our teeth isn’t only about brushing. The more often we consume sweet food and drinks the more likely we are to get holes in our teeth. Limiting any ‘sweet’ foods and drinks to meal times and eating ‘snacks’ such as bread, cheese, raw vegetables, nuts, rice crackers, and unsweetened popcorn, is more ‘tooth friendly’. - Esmé Palliser Oral Health Educator Community Oral Health Service Nelson Nelson Marlborough District Health Board
