1 Trinity School NEWSLETTER TO PARENTS and CARERS February 2014 HEADTEACHER’S LETTER Dear Parents and Carers, Half way through ... the school year already; for Year 9, half way through the 11-16 school and on the point of making choices; for Years 11 and 13, more than half way through their exam year ... and it feels as if it has been busy enough. First of all, thank you to the many parents and carers who have been in school over the past half term: for the Year 9 Parents‘ Evening, and for the Sixth Form Centre Open Evening (which we decided not to hold in the Sixth Form Centre because of the need for extra space). The Year 13 Parents Evening has only just happened, but it is always slightly sad as this could be the last one for students with whom we have worked for almost 7 years in many cases. It has been very good to hear of the many very good university offers coming in. Thanks also for those who came to the Form Tutor review evenings for Year 7 and Year 10, which is a new feature of our work with home this year, and they started at 2.30pm, which was another departure for us. All of these have been well attended and well received and thank you for your comments for their further improvements next time round. New style reports have also been sent home for Years 9 and 11, and it has been a pleasure to read and to write briefly on those, to see the unfolding stories of our students in the classroom and beyond. Comments from parents and carers on the reply slips will be welcome to these new reports. I have been impressed with the mature reflections of the students themselves on their work and progress. Some are leaving the Activities in and out of school section empty on those evaluations, and that is a shame. As you will read on the pages that follow, there is much going on in school for students to become involved with currently recruiting for the Landscape Team and about to close the theatre trip to the Royal Exchange Manchester to see ‗Much Ado About Nothing‘ as my own two examples. Contrary to a popular myth, there is also a lot to do in Carlisle for young people too, and perhaps this coming Spring will give students a chance in and/or out of school to try something new. On a different matter, we are conscious in school of how much attention there has been in the media to students being safe in their use of the Internet, and social sites in particular. We continue to be committed to ensuring that there is no bullying in school, and to act whenever we discover any. That includes cyber-bullying, of course. Some further guidance will be coming out for families after the half term break, and I hope that that is useful to parents and carers. It will appear on our website and via School Comms thank you for all who have signed up for that system. Education at its best is about the changes in an individual as she/he matures as a person, and obviously learns more as a student. Change itself has been a feature of schools for the past 25 years, and there has been much coverage recently in the local newspapers about required changes in Cumbrian secondary schools. I think that we are all conscious of the challenges that face every school, and it will be the years from 2014 until 2019 which see the biggest impact of the curriculum and examination changes in all schools. Through this Newsletter in the coming months, we shall try to keep you up to speed with what is happening. Thank you for your support and encouragement in changing times, and best wishes for the half term break. Yours sincerely Headteacher

HEADTEACHER’S LETTER

CHAPLAINCY

Norwegian Visitors On the last week of January we had missionaries from Norway come into school. They were students with Youth with a Mission (YWAM) and visited our Year 7 form groups and taught them a little bit about Norway, as well as delivering their ‘Thought for the Day.’ Congratulations Michael Fox from Northern in School Christian Unions (NISCU) has been coming into Trinity to run our Christian Union for years. On Friday 31st January he and his wife, Sally, welcomed their first child into the world. Congratulations to them and welcome to Gabriel Elijah! Thought for the Day The beginning of next half term sees the start of Fairtrade Fortnight, so please consider how you can support this with your products and watch out for Fairtrade events around town. Fairtrade is swiftly followed by Lent, so get your Fairtrade chocolate while you can! Our student council came together this term to consider the ‘Thought for the Day’ and have noted that they most enjoy the assemblies delivered by other students. The council also came up with lots of good ideas for future ‘Thoughts for the Day.’ Assemblies The themes for our assemblies for the coming half term are as follows:

Week 1 w/c Monday 24th February Fair Trade

Week 2 w/c Monday 3rd March Lent

Week 3 w/c Monday 10th March Acting Justly

Week 4 w/c Monday 17th March Run the Race

Week 5 w/c Monday 24th March Leadership

Week 6 w/c Monday 31st March Giving Thanks

Week 7 w/c Monday 7th April Easter

Our vicars will be visiting us on the week commencing Monday 17th March to deliver assemblies on running the race. The following week our prospective head boy and head girl teams will be visiting lower school to present their leadership skills and give the young pupils a chance to get to know the candidates before they make their vote.

RECENT EVENTS Future Chef 2014!! A huge well done to Frankie Harris Williams 11NSE who competed at the local final at the end of January. Along with her mentor chef, Chris Austin from Davids Restaurant, she created a fantastic menu of duo of Cumbrian pheasant, followed by a chocolate and hazelnut fondant. Frankie‘s dishes looked and tasted fantastic and she got some excellent feedback from the judges! Best of luck to the William Howard student who came 1

st and now goes through to the regional final in Manchester.

Year 10 Tutor Evening A Year 10 Tutor Evening took place on Tuesday, 21

st January in the Lower School. Parents had the

opportunity to speak to Form Tutors to get an overview of their child‘s progress and work in form. Thank you to all the parents who attended. Year 9 Ace Day and Parents’ Evening On Wednesday, 5

th February, all Year 9 students took part in workshops and activities around school

as they prepare to make their option choices. Activities involved the University of Newcastle, STEM ambassadors, to research progression opportunities and to speak to graduate students now working in industry. The students were encouraged to take time to weigh up the choices and courses open to them, to discuss options subjects they may be considering, and new subjects to find out more about that course. The day continued into the parents‘ open evening and thank you to all the many parents, carers and students who came along. Parents were introduced to the options process by a short presentation by Mr Kay, Deputy Head, offering key guidance for parents. We will be supporting Year 9 students throughout this process to ensure they choose options that they will both enjoy and that will enable them to achieve their full potential. Debating Success for Sixth Form Girls Recently a team of five Sixth Form girls travelled to Newcastle to take on Cramlington Learning Village in the Debating Matters Competition. They were superb: under intense scrutiny and questioning from the judges, the audience and the other team, they held their nerve and won both debates 2-0, displaying excellent literacy skills of listening, reading and writing in the process. They now go forward to the Regional Final in April, also in Newcastle. Congratulations to the team: Katie Richardson, Hannah Hayes, Chloe Patterson and Philippa Harmison, supported by Emma Walker. Thank you to Mrs Hopley and Miss Ashton for their fantastic advice and guidance given in preparation. Café 26, Classic FM concert at The Sage Gateshead On Friday 31

st January a small group of students and staff travelled over to The Sage to enjoy the

Classic FM concert featuring Bruch‘s Violin Concerto, along with some Rossini, Falla, and Fauré. The concert was enjoyed by all and a fellow audience member commented that she had never seen such a well behaved group of school students before! They were a credit to Trinity school. Year 7 Freeze Morning – Responsible Learners Year 7 had their latest freeze afternoon on 30

th January. Students were asked to consider ways in

which they could be more proactive and responsible for their own learning. Students watched a video of Mr McArdle teaching to help them reflect on this. We also thought about the benefits of peer and self assessment and why it‘s important to know what makes work of a high quality. Students then went on to reflect on the points and to be able to learn as much as they can during a lesson.

A-Level Physics trip to CERN 15 A-level Physics students and 2 teachers have just enjoyed a 4 day trip to Geneva. The focus of the trip was an inspirational day at CERN where students saw how the Large Hadron Collider worked and how this lead to the discovery of the Higgs Boson. The science experience continued with a visit to both the History of Science Museum and the Natural History Museum. A night time walk around the old town saw students appreciating the architecture and beauty of the cathedral and other buildings. And, of course, the Swiss experience would not be complete without a couple of courses of fondue, some yodelling and a man playing Edelweiss on cow bells. The students were extremely grateful to Mr Lindner for the time and effort that went into planning such an excellent trip. Miss McLeod

Readathon Our recent Readathon in school raised a total of £1,235.47. Well done to all of our students who did a fantastic job, had lots of fun and thank you to all who sponsored them and supported the Readathon event. The event encouraged students to read for pleasure, and the sponsorship money raised helps seriously ill children. Mrs Armstrong

Primary School Tri Golf Festival – 29

th January 2014

97 children took part in our annual primary school Tri Golf festival. Children from Year 1 & 2 came from Kingmoor Infants, Stanwix, and Robert Ferguson schools to take part. The Sixth Form Sports Leaders assisted by our Y9 leadership club students did a fantastic job of leading all of the activities. The focus of the afternoon was for the children to learn how to putt and chip the ball using the Tri golf clubs and foam balls. Well done to all the children and leaders who took part!

INFORMATION Child Protection Every school has a designated teacher for child protection issues. At Trinity, this is Mr Lythgoe (or in his absence Mr Mottershead). If you have any concerns regarding the well-being of a child, please discuss these with us. Fostering Through our work on child protection, we know there is a shortage of foster care places in Cumbria. We would encourage you to consider fostering. The minimum allowance is £515 per month per child fostered and we believe that is more than matched by the rewards of securing the safety and well-being of a child. If you are interested, check out cumbria.gov.uk/fostering or call 0303 333 1216 Fizzy drinks It is a good time to remind students and families that we do not allow fizzy drinks, especially such as Lucozade in school. The high sugar and caffeine content of ‗energy‘ drinks are really not good for young people, and they do not help their concentration or learning. We will be reminding students of this when we come back after half term. E-cigarettes I guess that the unexpected national media coverage has made the school‘s position clear on this, but worth simply restating here: as advised by health experts, the school does not allow E-cigarettes in any form in school. Dares – ‘Neck nominations’ This latest craze of ‗drink and dare‘ around the country is causing the police and health experts real concern. We would urge parents and carers to explain the risks of such behaviour, and that, in extreme cases, there have even been fatalities. We are happy that our school is a settled place to work and we shall be re-inforcing this for all students, in case the ‗dare to do something silly‘ craze also catches on anywhere. Thank you for your support. Parking - Trinity School Visitors’ Car Park and Strand Road The Trinity School visitors‘ car park in front of the main entrance is small, with just 6 spaces for visitors and 5 spaces for the sole use of Blue Badge holders. We also use it as a drop off and pick up point for a small number of students. Please do not use it as a dropping off area. We have noticed a big increase in the use of the car park by parents bringing their children to school in the morning or collecting them after school – often arriving 15 or 20 minutes early in the afternoon, and waiting, causing severe congestion in the car park and making access difficult for all. This presents us with a safety risk. While we understand that parking in Strand Road is limited, there are a number of Trinity students with mobility problems whose parents/carers need to have access to the Blue Badge parking area. We are asking for parents and carers not to use the car park when dropping off or collecting students. Please also avoid the double yellow lines and the designated school entrance areas on Strand Road. Rather, we ask parents/carers to pick up your children a little away from the school site, perhaps towards the Newman School end of Strand Road, or in one of the approach roads leading off Victoria

Place. For those travelling west or north, a pick up point near Wickes or DFS could avoid the congestion in Georgian Way/Victoria Place, which will inevitably become worse once the building of the new Art block for Carlisle College gets under way. We would greatly appreciate your co-operation with this request. Thank you. Instrumental/Singing Tuition Fees 2013/14 A reminder to parents/carers who are not paying by monthly standing order payments: the 2nd instalment is due to reach us by 28

th March 2014. Please note, if payments are not up to date,

students may not be allowed to continue with lessons. Payment can be made by standing order, credit/debit card either with ParentPay or by phoning the Finance Office. Payments by cash and cheque are still acceptable, cheques should be made payable to ―Trinity School‖. If you have a query or you require further information please contact the Finance Office on 01228 516051 ext 215.

Mrs A Larking, Finance Manager The News at Trinity Please have a look at Issue 10 of the News at Trinity which is now available on the info link of the school website. This includes news and pictures of the many and varied events we have celebrated at Trinity over the school year 2012 – 2013. If you would like a paper copy please contact Mrs Waddell via the school email: [email protected] Vouchers We are collecting the Sainsbury’s Active Kids 2014 Vouchers and Morrisons’ Let‘s Grow Vouchers as well as the Nestle Box Tops for Books. All can be handed in at main reception. Thank you.. Books needed As part of the library‘s campaign to encourage more 6

th form students to read for pleasure, we are

currently re-vamping our fiction section. We would like to acquire more contemporary fiction, book-group style novels and Young Adult fiction. So... if you have recently read any book that you think would appeal to a 6

th former, please would you consider donating to the 6

th form library.

Unused games Due to their popularity, the library is looking to increase the number of games available at lunchtimes. If you have any lurking at the back of cupboards that you no longer want, please would you consider donating them to us? The sort of things we are looking for are: Chess, Scrabble, Snakes & Ladders, Draughts, Connect 4, Mastermind and Dominoes - although anything appropriate and not too noisy would be gratefully received! We just ask that they are complete—we can repair any bashed boxes! Please hand any donations to the Library or to Main Reception. Learning Theme The learning theme for next half term is Thinking Skills. We will be encouraging students to think outside the box and willplace more emphasis on how students reach their answer rather than the answer itself. Year 9 Revision Session Year 9 will have exams in all their subjects over the period 31

st March – 9

th April. Students will be

taken off timetable for one lesson at the start of next week to spend an hour thinking about revision skills. They will have the opportunity to think about their learning style and to apply what they have learned to creating revision resources. Year 8 Freeze Morning Students in Year 8 will be involved in a morning of Thinking Skills activities. During this time, they will consider the best ways to ask questions and will use what they learn to solve a murder mystery. Students will work in teams to solve the crime and will have to present their findings at news conferences and to the Crime Prosecution Service. We hope that they have fun learning about thinking! Accelerated Reader Trinity are introducing the Star Reader programme with all our Year 7 students, to aid in the development of their Literacy skills. It‘s an enjoyable (and sometimes competitive!) programme that improves reading ability and will help our youngsters to achieve across the curriculum in the long term. They‘ll all read for around twenty five minutes in one English lesson a week and complete quizzes that test their understanding of the books. The more they can read appropriate materials at home too, the better they will improve their reading ability.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS The Ugandan Project

Preparations for our trip to Uganda in the summer are continuing and we have booked flights and accommodation. We are now starting to collect equipment to take out to Uganda for the two schools we support and are looking for second hand laptops, projectors, stationery, calculators etc. Our fundraising continues too and on Saturday, March 8 we are holding a Quiz Night with Auction of Promises at Scotby Village Hall. The event starts at 7.30pm and tickets (which include food) are £5.50. Teams should include 4 to 6 people and tickets are available at Reception in School. We should also like to hear from anyone who can offer a promise –this could be anything from a meal in a restaurant to a photographic session. Thank you for your continuing support. Mrs Jary

The Community Orchestra

Last year the school‘s Orchestra was disqualified from the Schools‘ Orchestra class (which we had won) of the music festival because members of staff performed with the orchestra! Instead we were awarded 1

st Place in the

Open Orchestra Class. So – this year, because we feel there is great benefit from our students playing alongside adults and we intend to enter both classes: the School Orchestra Class with an Orchestra entirely made up of students and the Open Orchestra Class with Trinity Community Orchestra. The Community Orchestra will be made up of students from the school and Staff, Peripatetic staff, Parents and Friends of the school. Students will rehearse the pieces for the performance in school time and then we will have a couple of evening or Saturday rehearsals for the adults to rehearse with the students. This is a great opportunity for students to play alongside adults and gain experience from this and we would welcome any instrumentalist of at least grade 4 standard who would like to be involved in this. The Community Orchestra will be playing an arrangement of ‗Carnival of the Animals.‘ For more information please email Mrs Richardson at [email protected] Mrs Richardson Café 26 Trips

We have a few places left for our trip on Saturday 29th

March 2014 to see Shakespeare‘s ‗Much Ado about Nothing‘ at The Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester. The trip will be a full day visit to Manchester, leaving school at about 9.00am and having a bit of a shop and a look around the city (hopefully the John Rylands library) before the matinee performance of this lovely Shakespeare comedy. Return sometime after 9.00pm. The cost of coach & ticket is £22.50. Classic FM concert at The Sage Gateshead

Friday 11th April 2014 7.30pm featuring the Shostakovich Piano Concerto, along with

Beethoven‘s 7th symphony and Tchaikovsky‘s Serenade for Strings. This is the one which comes just into the

Easter holidays but it looks worth it to me! Leave school about 3.00pm for a leisurely drive across, something to eat and then concert. Back 10.45pm and cost around £20-£25. If any students are interested in either trip please let Mrs Clarke at [email protected] know by Tuesday 25

th February.

Landscape Team

The Landscape team has three projects planned for the year ahead: to make progress with the school orchard - now in its third year, and the school‘s allotment - in its second year, and to renovate the wildlife garden. Students are being invited to participate from after half term. Spellbinding 2014 Reading Group

The Chapman Library Team is setting up the Spellbinding 2014 Reading Group. The group will be open to students in Years 7-9 who already enjoy reading, and talking about, the latest fiction books. Their challenge as part of the group will be to read ten selected books and then vote for their favourite. The group will meet one lunch time each week, starting after term until the end of May. Year 12 Geography Trip to Ireland – 9

th – 13

th April 2014

There is a meeting for all students on Wednesday 5th March after school in Hu2. All those going on the trip must

attend. Could arrangements for the final balance please be made and for it to be settled by Friday 14th March.

Thank you. Mr Stables World Book 6

th March 2014

Students are encouraged to design a bookmark in our competition. Entry forms are available from the library and further information can be viewed in the library section on Moodle. All students will have the opportunity to nominate their all-time favourite book. Nominations can be suggested by logging on to the Library Section on Moodle and clicking on the World Book Day course. Also in the Library at Lunchtime on this day Bookends will be setting up a book sale for students. A range of paperback books will be on sale up to a value of £7.99. Students will be able to purchase a book or exchange a WBD voucher for a free book (while stocks last!). Alternatively the voucher can be used as a £1.00 discount on a book purchase over £2.99.

As usual it was freezing cold and pouring down but this did not deter the girls, who were in great spirits. There was some excellent hockey played by both schools and the matches were end to end, making it exciting to watch. A big thank you goes to the Year 11 girls from Nelson Thomlinson who umpired the matches, and to Mrs Davidson who came along to support and help with transporting students. Hockey - Austin Friars v Trinity – Saturday 1

st February

Under 14 Trinity 3 Austin Friars 0 A fantastic game for Trinity - even with some key players missing, the Trinity girls linked well with some excellent passing. Fiona Davidson in Y7 had an outstanding match alongside her sister Rachael - Fiona was drafted in at the last minute to make up the numbers! Meg Burns had a great debut match and Jodi Leeson was playing in her second match - they both played superbly. Captain Lucy Jefferson linked well with Eve Driver and were instrumental in all of the goals. Other team members who made an outstanding contribution were Lucy Brown, Ashleigh Ritchie, Catherine Philip, Emma Little. Under 13 Trinity 0 Austin Friars 2 As the weather worsened, Trinity Y8's (with Fiona Davidson and Catherine Philip playing their second match of the morning) took to the pitch. Although the game didn't go Trinity's way, there was some very promising play by our girls. In defence Sophie Mason, Caitlin Reeves-Brown and Fiona. In midfield we had Beth Faughey Scraggs, Grace Foster, Jade Airey, Megan Hanson and Jess Machin and up front Alex Collins, Darienne Boyd and Roslyn Mackie. Roslyn was most valuable player.

HOUSE NEWS Amazon Everyone in Amazon is looking forward to the half term break, with many plans for exciting activities. In assembly we have been thinking about the light and are very pleased to see the mornings much lighter now when we come to school and the evenings are getting longer too. We have paused to think about the benefits of walking to school so we can appreciate the signs of Spring. We had news of our sponsored Jaguar this week Jaguar (Panthera onca) Jaguars don‘t have a specific breeding season, after jaguars mate with their chosen female the pregnancy lasts around 14 weeks. The norm is for a jaguar to give birth to two cubs but they can have up to four at a time. Weighing in at between 700-900 grams, cubs have rough, woolly, spotted fur coats and it takes two weeks for a cub to open its eyes for the first time.

All the students in Amazon House have been encouraged to support Random Acts of Kindness and do something nice for other people. Mrs Walton was really pleased to be on the receiving end of a RAOK which made her happy cry!! Thank you to the anonymous letter writer, it certainly made Mrs Walton smile!! Keep up the good work folks!

Kilimanjaro Congratulations to 7 FDG for some super sporting achievements. Johnny Westgarth, Adam Tiffin and Matthew Johnston have received certificates for the inter form chess competition from Mr Mottershead. They have also been actively involved with the inter form cricket competition for Year 7 and have visited classes to organise this off their own bat (no pun intended!) The County Gymnastics Schools‘ Trinity girls gym teams won both the under 14 and under 19 County competition held at Carlisle Gym club recently. Our girls from Kilimanjaro were Victoria Bradley and Caleigh Alison. A brilliant achievement girls, well done. Everest Everest House students had a lovely surprise from our charity: Second Chances. The family who fostered Jess, a German Shepherd, wrote us a lovely letter saying how much Jess had enjoyed our gift and sent us some photographs of Jess taken on Christmas day playing with the many treats we had provided in our gift shoe box. These photographs were shown in assembly and are now proudly displayed in Everest House area if any students would like to see them. We are currently taking suggestions from Everest students for our next charity venture so watch this space! A special mention must go to Bethany Lindsley 8MHA who, following an assembly the Army gave in school, has joined the Army Cadets: Harraby Division. Bethany has recently spent a weekend at Carlisle Castle as part of her basic training and took part in a range of activities including: shooting practice, field craft and military training. We wish Bethany every success in this new adventure and look forward to hearing about further training weekends as they occur. Nile Charity work – students in Year 7 in Nile House charged 20p to deliver Valentine‘s cards to students across the school on Friday. Additionally, students in Year 11 devised a quiz with questions on the River Nile & Africa, general knowledge, sport and music. Throughout this final week prior to the half term break, Mrs Wylie has baked and then sold cookies with demand seriously exceeding supply. All proceeds are going to support our link school in Dar es Salaam in western Tanzania.

SIXTH FORM NEWS

Luke Gay – Hadrian’s Wall run On Friday 17th January Year 13 student Luke Gay set off to run Hadrian‘s Wall from east to west. He began at 7pm and expected to pass through Carlisle at noon on Saturday. Completing the first 22 miles in 3 hours, Luke kept up a good pace over the next 25. He then unfortunately had some really bad luck as he damaged his foot quite badly and had to be picked up at 5 a.m. Luke is now concentrating on recovering full fitness and is determined not to be beaten. He aims to finish the remaining section at Easter and complete the full run in the summer. We wish him well with both endeavours. Lessons from Auschwitz Project During the autumn term, Silke Davison and Samantha Schug were involved in the ‗Lessons from Auschwitz‘ project which included a trip to the historic sight of Auschwitz, located in the town of Oswiecim. It was a four-part course, with a seminar before and after, briefing and de-briefing the students of the experience. In the follow-up seminar after the trip, Sam and Silke reflected upon their experience, and began thinking of ideas for the Next Steps part of the course. Both girls decided to focus on the contemporary lessons they could learn from the Holocaust, and emphasise the issue of prejudice and discrimination. They created a short film, in which they interviewed John Stevenson, the MP for Carlisle, on his view of prejudice and discrimination as well as what he thought society could learn from the Holocaust. This idea came from a visit he paid to the school back at the start of the year, and they thought he‘d be a prime candidate for the documentary. The documentary also included factual information about discrimination of the Jews and other minorities, as well as general information about Auschwitz and the Holocaust. In honour of Holocaust Memorial Day which was on the 27th of January, Sam and Silke presented their well produced and informative video to Year 12 and 13, highlighting what they had learnt and raising awareness of not only the Holocaust, but of prejudice and discrimination prevalent in our society today. Finance talk by the University of Lancaster Leanne Bates, UK Student Recruitment and Outreach Manager from Lancaster University, visited the school on Thursday 30 January. Leanne presented an assembly to Year 13 students on managing their finances whilst studying at university. Many students had not really thought about how to budget, therefore income, part time work, loans etc. were looked at and then offset against expenditure. It was interesting to see what sort of expenditure students had to budget for. An exercise on how to make your money go further with regards to food shopping left many students amazed at different prices for the same goods. Leanne gave the students a sheet with three identical shopping lists: one for the basics range, one for Sainsbury‘s own brand and one for branded goods. This highlighted to the students how much they could save by shopping wisely – in the example given over £30.00 was saved by buying the basics range. Ahead of Lancaster University‘s presence at the Sixth Form Open Evening, Leanne also conducted a mock interview with a student, asking challenging questions and providing the student with extremely useful feedback prior to his actual interview.
