FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I have been spending a lot of time in classrooms observing the teachers’
lessons and the student participation. This will assist me in providing a
relevant professional development plan for the teachers. We have already
had a number of PD sessions that have mainly centred on creating a “Safe
and Secure” environment.
One of the highlights for me has been to observe the quality of the rela-
tionships between the teachers and the students. There is a real warmth
but also respect between the two. I have also been impressed by the
widespread use of IT in the lessons. The SU teachers are making good
use of the IT resources provided in each classroom.
Finally you will see a report in this newsletter regarding the 2014 ICGSE
results for our Form 5 students. Overall we are satisfied with the results.
There is ample proof that students with the right attitude and ability can
achieve very high results under the teachers’ guidance.
“ The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” ~ William James (1842-1910)

Do not think of your faults,
still less of other’s faults; look
for what is good and strong
and try to imitate it. your
faults will drop off, like dead
leaves, when their time
comes.

cerely and moderately and

make you enter Paradise, and

little.”

PROGRAM OF STUDY
2014 IGCSE RESULTS
We have received the IGCSE results for 2014. Nine of the eleven subjects stud-
ied had a 100% pass rate which is a very good result for the school. There were
very strong results in Chemistry and Mathematics with most students scoring
well above the expected average pass. Three students were awarded the pres-
tigious A+ which is a great credit to their teachers. There were also good re-
sults in Art and Design, Biology, 2nd Language English and Physics.
However, the strongest single result was in Malay with half of the students re-
ceiving an A+ grade and the rest scoring above the average. This is an excep-
tional result and is indicative of the commitment of our students and teachers
to their learning.
Special mention must be made of the following students who scored A+ or A in
a number of subjects :
Please note that these students have attended SU for most of their Secondary
school years.
FIRE DRILL Last week we held a Fire Drill to test out safety procedures. We are currently
reviewing the drill and will make some changes to ensure that our evacuation
plans are the best that they can be.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY PROCEDURE
In Week 3 the staff were provided with training for the implementation of OH
and S Procedures. These procedures are designed to quickly and efficiently deal
with any hazards in the school that might cause an injury. A system of reporting
has been implemented that should address any risks that arise. This initiative is
part of our Priority Area to create a “Safe and Attractive School.”
All parents should have received copies of
their child’s Program of Study for each sub-
ject by now. We encourage you to discuss this
with your child and share your thoughts on
the PoS as outlined in the document.

OBSERVATION OF TEACHERS’ LESSONS In Week 6 we will begin a program of lesson observations. All teachers will be
observed as they teach their classes. Following the observation the teachers will
meet with me to discuss the lesson and debrief on the success of the lesson.
This will be maintained throughout the year. Research has shown that provid-
ing teachers with performance feedback on their lessons is the most effective
way to improve student learning.
SOCCER INITIATIVE
Some of our senior students have shown valuable initiative in proposing the for-
mation of a school soccer team with a view to playing other private schools in
the area. The team will begin training soon and hopes to play its first match by
the end of the month. Parents please note a signed permission note to attend
training and play in games is required.
CLASSROOM MONITORING
Earlier this week we commenced a system for monitoring the classroom envi-
ronments. Using a checklist, each class was monitored to ensure that the re-
quired documents, equipment and procedures were in place.
