How are you surviving the heat? We certainly have had those ‘lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer’ rolled out as sung by Nat King Cole. The heat wavethat has covered much of eastern Ontario reminds us of the need to stay hydrated and not to over exert if you are working outside.
Bill Murtha was our speaker at the June 27th general meeting. He is a
local artist and author who told us his life story. Since 1963 he has battled type 1
diabetes. He has suffered both eye and foot problems, caused by a break down in
the nervous system, due to his diabetes. Bill looked inward and decided that it
was up to him to take control of his diabetes and not allow it to take control of
him. In taking control, Bill identified four issues upon which he would focus:
1. his physical well-being
2. his social well-being, which he felt was probably the most important
3. his emotional well-being and,
4. his creative well-being / a diversion.
Bill’s sage advice has helped him to continue to get joy out of everyday living
and it can help us as well.
July 12th was our annual picnic. This year’s event was held at Timber
Ridge golf course. The weather provided us with warm sun and a gentle, cooling
breeze. The menu was bbq hot dogs and hamburgers along with salads, desserts
and tea or coffee to drink. Table games such as scrabble, poker, bid euchre and
bridge were enjoyed by many of our members, while others chose to take part in
bocce ball, water balloons, putting or chipping activities out on the lawn. A big
thank you goes out to our Social Committee once again for organizing a
wonderful, fun-filled afternoon.
I look forward to seeing you at our next general meeting on the 25th of
July.
Bob

The Canada Day theme at our June 27 PROBUS General Meeting was a great
success. There was a special Canada Day cake, and a morning filled with
Canadiana songs and video memorabilia to please every generation. It was a really well attended event with
more than ninety members in attendance.
