Probus Club of Mountain View Our Strength is Fellowship, our Success is Participation President’s Message The notion that activity is related to well-being has long been an accepted fact. Recent studies have shown a correlation between social activity and living longer, happier and healthier lives, or as one study put it, “aging successfully”. Joining any club will do, whether it’s curling, bridge, volunteer or community groups, or Probus. The trick is to socialize in groups, which new studies suggest is the leading way to live long and prosper. In fact, according to a study published in the journal BMJ Open, belonging to social groups is as effective as exercise in promoting longevity. Being part of social groups boosts self-esteem, resilience and mental health, it may encourage healthy habits, and it promotes better sleep habits, researchers say. The bottom line is, if you were unsure whether to go to a Probus meeting or to join the book club or go to the Romeo lunch, the evidence suggests you ought to dither no more. You’ll sleep better and you may live longer if you participate! SPEAKER – JUDITH BANVILLE The Barrie Tornado Remembered

2015 marked the 30th anniversary of that fateful day of May 31st.1985, when the tornado hit and changed Barrie and its people forever. Many have privately told their stories of loss, survival, the search and rescue efforts, and how the community rallied. There’s never been a collective opportunity to share these stories or to acknowledge those who helped in so many ways. Judith Banville presents her unique collection of stories of that day through incredible tales and pictures.

Judith is a personal historian who believes everyone has a story. She organizes free Show & Tell Simcoe County events to provide

opportunities for everyone to share their stories and bring communities together.

Through her business, Word Portraits, she helps people preserve the stories and pictures of their lives in books to leave a very special legacy for family and friends.

Last Month’s Speaker: Catherine Gildiner

What an animated speaker she was. Cathy took us through the different stages in her childhood and life, that shaped who she is today. Many of us are now reading her biography with enthusiasm. Quite the story teller, and if most of it is true, her life has been far from boring.

$78 each – 50/50 Draw won by Dave Sturch & Jane Fleetwood-Morrow

Thanks Joya, Ivan & Paul for selling tickets & counting the $$$

Once again, thanks to all of you loyal buyers!!!

YOU help us purchase items needed to run our meetings more effectively, and to pay for great guest speakers, AV equipment and other operations of our Club !!!

Congratulations & thank you to Maureen Baker, secretary of the Social Committee for all your hard work on the social

committee.
