CongratulationstoElliottBowyerandTammyCrockeronsuccessfullyobtainingcoachingaccreditations:ElliotthasreceivedherLevel2CoachingAccreditationandTammyhasreceivedherLevel1.

Overthepastseveralyears,ElliotthascoachedCLRCjuniorsandiscurrentlycoachingpara-rowersCameronZellerandIanCooper.ElliotthasbeenCameron’sprimarycoachforthepast18months,helpingCamerontoachievesomeimpressivemilestones,themostrecentbeingCamerontransitioningfromthedouble-hulledsculltoasinglewithpontoons.Ianhasonlystartedrowinginthepast5monthswithElliottashiscoach.IanwillbecompetingattheSydneyInternationalRegattanextweek–veryimpressiveaftersuchashorttimerowing.Welldonetobothofyouandgoodluckfornextweek!ElliotthasalsobeenbroadeninghercoachingexperiencebyregularlyattendingcoachingsessionswithnationalandACTAScoaches.Shehasalsotakenupapositionaswomen’scoachatANUBC,whereseveralex-CLRCathletesnowrow.

TammyhasbeeninstrumentalincoachingtheOctober2015juniorLear-to-Rowprogram.ShehascontinuedtocoachthissquadinconjunctionwithRodneyPalmer.Thissquadhasachievedoutstandingperformances,receivinggold,silver,andbronzeinbothnoviceandintermediate“A”and“B”eventsinrecentregattas.Tammyalsoobtainedhermotor-boatlicenseandisnowaBoatRowingOfficial(BRO),officiatinginthepastfewregattas.

BothElliandTammy’sdedicationandresponsibilitytotheclubandtherowingcommunityisaproudachievementforCLRC.Congratulationsagainonallyourhardworkinobtainingyourcoachingaccreditations!

Wehaveenjoyedalovelysummerhoweverasweheadintowinterpleaserememberthatyoushouldnotrowwhenthereisasmallboatalert,wheretherearehighwindscausingwhitecapsorwhereitwouldputyouintothepathofanactivestormcellorlightning.

Makeaseriousefforttowearclothingthatisreflectivetoincreasevisibility.Thisrecommendationappliesunderalllightingconditions.

Boatlightsarerequiredunderthefollowingconditions:• priortoandintheimmediatetimeaftersunrise.• immediatelypriortoandthenaftersunsunset.• lowvisibility,suchasduringheavyrainorperiodsoffog• lowlight,includingheavilyovercastskies

Intheaboveconditions,ifyoudon’thavealightonyourboat,don’tgoout.Youcanpurchaseyourownboatlightoruseonefromtheclub.IfyouareunsureofwheretheclubboatlightsarekeptpleaseseeyoucoachortheclubcaptainLoydPerrin.

Rowingbeforepostedsunriseandafterpostedsunsetcanbedangerous.Individualscullersshouldconsidertheneedforanaccompanyingsafetyboator,attheveryleast,trainingtogetherwithotherscullers.Rememberthatanincident,suchasacapsizeorcollision,thatoccursaftersunsetwillhavetobedealtwithindarkeningconditions.

Incaseofaccident,staywithyourboatratherthanattempttoswimtosafety.Theboat,unlessseriouslydamaged,canbeusedasaliferaft.Ifthewateriscold,getasmuchofyourbodyoutofthewateraspossiblebydrapingyourselfovertheupturnedhull.Turntheboatoverforthispurposeifnecessary.Youcanalso"buddy-up",i.e.,tworowersholdontoeachotheruntilrescuedtoprovidemutualsupportandwarmth.Beawareofwhoisaffectedbyanincidentandensurethatallareaccountedfor.

AlexGrzeskowiakcompetinginthreeevents.Fridaymorningwasperfectforapractiserowonthecourse,withthefirstracestartingat1.00pm.Alextooktheopportunitytorowhisfirstcompetitive2000minasinglescull,withagoodwarmupThursdaynightandFridaymorning.Thetemperaturesweresettosoarinthelate30’sovertheweekend,whichwouldproveverychallengingforallcompetitorsandspectatorsalike..

CLRChadgreatrepresentationatACTChampionshipsinFebruarywith43juniorsand2masterscompetinginatotalof73events.Thisyear’schampionshipswerethefirstforanumberoftheclub’snoviceathletes,whilstourintermediateandseniorcrewswerecompetingfortheirsecond,third,and,insomeinstances,fourthtime.

ItwasdefinitelytoughcompetitionovertheweekendandCLRCathletes.Allathleteshadpositiveattitudesandfocusedonpersonalimprovementsandresults.AnumberofPB’swereachieved.SpecialmentiongoestoHelenaSmithforknocking40secondsoffherPB:20secondsintheheatofWU171xandthenanother20secondsinthefinal!SomePW’s(personalworst!)werealsoachieved!ACTChampions.EmmaGruenandYolandaPattersoncamefirstintheWU152xfinal,andAlexGrzeskowiakachieved3rdplaceinMU191xfinaland2ndplaceinMU192xfinal(rowingwithNathanKennedyfromDaramalan).Thefollowingmadeitthroughtofinalsintheirrespectiveevents:WU194x+(3rdinheat;6thinfinals):MikaLeslie,LilyBryant,RebeccaHyslop,IsabellaAlvanos,EmmaGruen(cox)

Congratulationstoallparticipantsontheirachievements,andspecialthankstoeveryoneinvolvedinensuringourathletescouldcompeteattheChampionships.Asyouknow,itisahugeexerciseinlogisticstogetboatstotheregatta.IttakesseveralhoursonThursdayandFridayafternoons(in38°heat!)toderigandloadboatsontotrailers;transportthemtoWestonPark;unloadandrerigreadyforracing.Nottomentiongettingthembacktothesheds.Ittakesatirelesscrewofhelpersandthereisnowaywecoulddoitwithoutthissupport.ThankstoeveryoneinvolvedJ----CatherineBower.

IntheMen’sUnder19singlescullAlexplaced3rdinhisHeatand6thintheFinal.Sundaybecameanendurancetestintheextremeheatwithtemperaturespeakingjustover38degC.IntheSchoolBoysinglescullAlexplaced2ndinhisHeatand5thintheFinal.WiththelastfeweventsofthedaytogothecompositeSchoolBoysU19quadofCLRC/ACTASrowedasolidracefinishing5th.WehavetheACTChampsonthe20thFebandAustralianNationalsinPenrithtolookforwardtoinMarchbut,withfingers-crossed,considerablylowertemperatures.Happyrowing.KathyG.
