Portfolios In previous years we have provided a portfolio of student work with the mid year and end of year reports. Mrs Hounsell’s class trialled a portfolio with Class Dojo last year and then surveyed the parents. Overwhelmingly the response was very positive for the digital portfolio in preference to the folder. This year 1/2, 2/3 and 4/5/6 will be using the digital portfolio to send a sample your child’s learning home each week. The digital portfolio remains accessible from year to year.

School Development Days Variation On 19 and 20 December 2019, there will only be the principal and office staff at the school. Students and staff will finish on Wednesday 18th December.

Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Keep coughing kids home and see your GP Whooping cough (also called pertussis) began increasing across NSW todays the end of 2018, especially in children between the ages of 5 and 14 years. NSW Health anticipates that this in-crease will continue into 2019. School aged children who are infected with whooping cough usually experience a troubling cough that can persist for months, but they rarely get severe illness. However, they can spread the infection to younger siblings and other more vulnerable people, who are at higher risk of severe disease. Whooping cough can be a life threatening infection in babies. What can you do to prevent whooping cough?

Make sure vaccinations are up to date for all family members Be alert for symptoms of whooping cough Keep coughing kids home, to prevent them spreading the

infection to others, and see your GP to get them tested for whooping cough.

For more information on whooping cough and vaccination visit the NSW Health website www.health.nsw.gov.au/infectious/whoopingcough/pages/efault.aspx

DSM news

Can you believe we are already past the half way mark of Term 1? The time has flown.

As we are now all settled into the new school year it still remains important to inform myself or the school if you or your serving member will be away from home due to course, attachment, deployment or if you have decided to go MWD(U).

Once I know of your absence, usually a week and beyond in duration, I can provide your child/ren with the support best suited to them in relation to the parental absence.

At the end of this newsletter is a form for you to fill out and return when required. You can find extra forms at the front office if required or you can also email me or phone the office.

Please use this form to advise the DSM if a parent or guardian will be away from home for any period of time. Having this information ensures that all staff are aware and can be alert for any signs of changes in behaviour, as well as providing appropriate support if children should show signs of distress.

Thank you,

Rachel Dolan (Defence School Mentor)

Ladies and Gentlemen of Kapooka

The INCLOSED LANDS PROTECTION ACT 1901 is designed to prevent trespassing, and you can be charged under this act if you have been found to be unlawfully on 'inclosed land' or a 'prescribed premises' or behaving in a manner that constitutes offensive conduct. What is inclosed land? lnclosed land is defined as that which is surrounded or partly surrounded by a fence, wall or other structure, and has recognisable boundaries. If land is occupied or used in connection with a building or structure, it can also be classified as 'inclosed land'. What are prescribed premises? Prescribed premises are defined as land occupied or used in connection with certain types of buildings including childcare centres, schools, hospitals and nursing homes. This does not include buildings that are nearby, but are not used for the same purpose, or public roads which go through the land. What this means to me? Both Kapooka Public School (KPS) and the Kapooka Early Childhood Centre (KECC) are prescribed premises, and therefore protected from trespassers. To reinforce this simply, regardless of whether your children attend KPS or KECC, nobody is permitted to enter or remain in the KPS or KECC grounds outside school hours. The KPS and KECC grounds are out of bounds as follows: a) 30 minutes after school finishes on a school day; b) Any time on a weekend; and c) Any time during school Any person found to be in within the KPS or KECC grounds outside school hours are considered to be in breach of the Act and are liable to prosecution. Any questions can be directed to the ARTC S1/4, MAJ Roe on 6933 8370 or the Kapooka Public School Principal, Mrs Eacott on 02 6931 2703
