On the Journey...Mark T. Davis, Pastor [email protected]
My article this month consists in repeating important news from last month's meeting of the Session. Please take time to read it carefully. On Monday, May 18th, the Session unanimously approved the recommendation of the Personnel Committee to reconfigure facilities staffing. The Personnel Committee has given substantial thought for many, many months to the issues concerning how we handle our property, its care and its repair. Over many years, there have been ongoing complaints and concerns regarding general building conditions and ongoing small repairs. We have given ample thought to whether these concerns represent a performance issue or if they are more the consequence of system issues. Put most simply, we do not believe that the skill set necessary for the care of our property is best met with a single position.

Therefore, it has been recommended by Personnel that we change our staffing model. The proposed model has three pieces:
1) A part-time Facilities Manager - this person would work up to 25 hours a week.
a. Approximately 15 hours per week focused on routine management and oversight to proactively care for our property. b. This person would coordinate their work closely with the Ministry Support Team to help integrate administration, communication and property repair, cleaning and maintenance. c. This person would provide direct oversight to both a part-time sexton and cleaning service contractors. d. In addition, this person would handle both light cleaning and spot cleaning as necessary. e. Light repairs as necessary.
2) A part-time Sexton - this person would provide opening and closing for Wednesday evening LOGOS, Sunday morning worship, and special outside uses. This person would ensure that the programs begin with clean restrooms and entry ways and do general room set up as needed. This person will also provide a hospitable welcome to those coming to the church building. This person will report to the Facilities Manager. 3) A Cleaning Service - increasingly offices of all kinds work on a contract basis with cleaning services. Such services can be tailored to meet our specific needs. We seek to build the expectation of having our facilities in the highest quality condition for the use of our programs and people. In the past two years, we have experimented with the seasonal use of outside cleaning services. Our experiences have been positive in every way.
We are working closely with William, our Sexton, as his current position will end as we move forward. One of our elders is working with William and with me to help sort out the best way we can support William while carrying out the above recommendations. While there is no firm timeline in hand, we anticipate making these changes by mid-summer. If you have questions or concerns please direct them to me, to any member of the Personnel Committee (Tommy Glover, Dr. Jan Guy, Steve Kelly, Ann-Phillips Mayfield, Lewis Paisley, Dr. Butch Welsh), or to any member of the Session (Rod Brotherton, Phyllis Culp, Dr. Jeff Creech, Merl Hackbart, Steve Kelly, Diane Kraft, Walter May, Ann-Phillips Mayfield, Pam Jenkins McGee, Clint McKinley, Tom Miller, Dr. Bruce Nicol, Sr., George Pearson, Dr. Debbie West). SUMMER CHOIR
Summer Choir is here again - a time when all are welcomed to join in with
the choir during services in August. To participate, simply show up in the
choir area at 10:00 am on any Sunday in August. There will be a 45 minute
rehearsal to learn the music to be sung in the service that follows at 11:00
am. This is a great opportunity for people who would like to try out the choir
or for those who enjoy singing in a choir, but who cannot make the regular
weekly commitment required from September - May. We hope you'll join
us!
FPC CHANCEL and CHAMBER CHOIR CD IN PRODUCTION
The CD that the Chancel and Chamber Choir recorded last spring is currently in production
with an expected release date of early Fall. The choirs recorded musical settings of beloved
psalms, including three settings of Psalm 23. The CD will be a great way to enjoy the beauty
of sacred choral music throughout the year, and will make great gifts to share with friends and
family. Stay tuned for more information as the details are firmed up!
MONTREAT WORSHIP AND MUSIC CONFERENCE
On June 28th
, thirty-nine people from First Presbyterian
traveled to Montreat, North Carolina to participate in the annual Worship
and Music Conference sponsored by the Presbyterian Association of Musicians. Participation
in the annual conference has become a tradition for many in our congregation. This year, 22
adults, 12 youth and five children from our church are gathering alongside over 800 others
from across the country to worship, sing, dance, study, play, and enjoy the beautiful setting of
the Presbyterian conference center at Montreat.
Participants always return to Lexington refreshed and renewed, and bring back with them
creative ideas for worship and church life that are integrated into our own community here as
the year unfolds. If you've never attended, consider joining us in 2016 - a conference that
features our own Kelly Abraham and Caitlin Foehse on the planning team.

Treasurer's Report Financial Summary May 2015
REVENUES & EXPENSES
Summary of Revenues May pledges increased to $84,402, up from $57,314 last month. So far this year the average monthly pledges have been $71,778. Other revenues performed about as expected, receiving $7,337 on a budget of $7,406. Total revenues, as shown on the chart, rose to $91,773 from $65,842 last month. Monthly average revenues have been $82,944, on a budget of $81,332. Year-to-date pledges have totaled $358,890, compared to the budget of $369,531. Interest & trust revenues are at the budgeted level, at $12,737. Other revenues are doing better than expected, at $43,091, on a budget of $37,030. Total revenue for the year has reached $414,719, within 1% of the budget of $418,981. Summary of Expenses
May expenses declined slightly to $98,244, down from $106,672 last month. Personnel expense was a total of $49,965, which was very close to budget for the month. For the year, personnel costs have tracked very close to budget. Total expenses for the year thus far have been $425,153 on a budget of $454,663, which is a trend that has continued from prior years. The summary of monthly and yearly expenses by Commission follows.
DISCIPLESHIP (Worship, Outreach, Children's Ministry, Youth Ministry, Other Ministry) Total Discipleship expenses were $6,037 on a budget of $14,137 for May. Music &
Arts Camp lower than projected. Worship expenses were $6,114 due to the timing of
payments to Guest Musicians for special programs. Children's Ministry was on budget and no Youth funds were expensed. Outreach funds totaled $500 during the month.
For the year-to-date Discipleship expenses were $40,831 on a budget of $71,722. Almost all of the difference comes from $27,000 in budgeted Outreach payments that have not occurred to date.
RESOURCES (Administration, Building & Equipment) Total Resources expenses were $41,893 on a budget of $45,562. Administration was
under budget by $3,000 due to timing differences in several categories. Renewal of the annual property and workers compensation insurance was about $3,500 higher than budgeted. Building & Maintenance costs were $1,974 less than the budgeted level of $5,000.
For the year-to-date Resources expenses were $116,879 on a budget of $119,810. Insurance and maintenance costs have been higher than planned but other categories have enjoyed lower spending levels.
BELONGING (Fellowship, Membership, Picnic, Life Events) Total Belonging expenses were $1,435 on a budget of $2,233 for the year-to-date.
Net Revenues/Expenses Net revenues for May were -$6,471 compared to the budget of -$30,993. We are thankful for the surge in pledges and gifts that has lifted revenues to be near planned levels and for the dedicated efforts of the staff and Commissions to control spending levels during the summer months. Net revenues for the year were -$10,434 compared to the budget of -$35,682. This reflects the seasonal nature of revenues and expenses and means that we are doing somewhat better than we expected for this time period. PERMANENTLY RESTRICTED FUNDS SUMMARY
These funds are invested with the Presbyterian Foundation in Balanced Growth mutual funds and a managed investment account. Statements are received quarterly on these accounts. The Session has approved an income distribution from the 174 Legacy Fund equal to 5% of the 12 quarter moving average balance. Those funds will be distributed in July 2015. The Faith in Action Fund provides quarterly income of 4% of the 12 quarter moving average balance. LOAN BALANCE SUMMARY
The Church maintains a $500,000 line of credit with Central Bank. The line is used for short-term borrowing, generally for cash management purposes. There is a $0 balance on the line of credit.
