2012 Product Review
From September 8 to 11, Mr. Chow, Mr. Lin, Mr. So, and Ms. Lin of HIOKI’s Taiwanese distributor, Don Ho & Co., Ltd., visited HIOKI to undergo product training.
Every September, HIOKI holds the HIOKI Festival, entertaining residents of the surrounding area with a classical music recital (or this year, a performance by internationally renowned tenor Ken Nishikiori) and various food and beverage stalls set up by individual departments at the company. The consistently popular event also includes activities such as taiko drum performances and dances by cheerleading teams on an outdoor stage and a quiz contest. This year’s festival was no exception,
attracting a large number of visitors from the community. The Interna-tional Sales and Marketing Department sold popcorn, beer, and cock-tails, and the four visitors from Don Ho & Co. joined the department in enjoying the festival. The department sold traditional sweets that the trainees had brought from Taiwan at the stall, where they proved to be a big hit with festival attendees. In a warm and moving gesture, they donated all proceeds to victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake, so we’d like to offer a big thank-you to our guests from Taiwan. We hope other distributors will consider visiting the HIOKI Festival if the oppor-tunity presents itself!
On September 10, the trainees’ day began with a meeting with new International Sales Director, Naomasa Kurasawa, followed by a meeting with President Yoshiike and then product training. Whenever sales person-nel from Don Ho visit HIOKI for training, the diligence and enthusiasm with which they approach their studies never fails to impress. Despite the short amount of time available for training, they continually asked questions and ended up staying late into the night. Even though there wasn’t much time available, the experience proved to be a valuable and significant one.
It’s no easy thing to meet colleagues who live and work in faraway places, but when the opportunity to get together and talk does arise, it exerts a positive influence on our ability to communicate effectively in the future. Normally, we can only communicate by phone or email, but after getting together, we felt a renewed desire to stay in close touch and work together to promote HIOKI products… And we’re looking forward to the day when we can meet again!

The instrument, which is placed on the cart during the tests, captures data including battery consumption, speed, internal temperature, motor surface temperature, current, and motor RPM. The company chose the MR8875 due to its ability to operate on a DC power supply.
Model: LR8401-20Customer: Quality control department of electronic component manufacturerApplication: Measurement of connector re-sistanceDescription: The customer records 30 chan-nels in parallel during contact resistance test-ing and evaluation of connectors. The com-pany records variations in resistance during a variety of environmental tests focusing on temperature shocks, vibration, and other con-ditions. The customer previously connected an ohmmeter to conduct these tests but chose the LR8401-20 due to its ability to record data for multiple channels directly.

The company likes the ability to use a 30-meter extension cable so that data can be recorded at a high degree of precision even when the sensor and recording equipment are operated some distance apart. Currently, the customer is using six sets of equipment on a trial basis and expects to purchase a large number of systems if the results of the trial are favorable.
Model: MR8875Customer: Testing department of automo-bile manufacturerApplication: Acquisition of data during colli-sion testingThe customer needed an onboard recorder that could withstand impact forces of at least 40 G for use in collision testing. The MR8875 underwent collision testing with forces of up to 50 G during its development, leading the com-pany to choose it.
Model: SM-8220Customer: Market service department of super computer provider Application: Testing of insulated mats used on server room floorsAs an alternative to a flooring tester, the cus-tomer measures the resistance of an insulation resistance test mat. The company, which has added the procedure to a list of regular testing items in its equipment maintenance program, uses proprietary electrodes for the test.
Model: FT3470-51Customer: A u t o m o b i l e e q u i p m e n t m anu f ac t u re r (p r o duc t deve l o p m e n t department)Application: Field intensity testing of an automotive LF antennaThe customer uses the FT3470-51 to measure radio emissions at a frequency of about 130 kHz output from a low-frequency (LF) antenna designed for use with an automobile smart entry system. In the testing process, waveform output is recorded by a Memory HiCORDER and then subject to FFT analysis. While the FT3470-51 does not offer guaranteed accuracy in the target frequency range, the company determined that the instrument offers adequate performance for making a relative comparison of approximate field intensity.
Model: LR5031Customer: Product management depart-ment of home-use medical equipment rental company Application: Recording sterilization system operationWhen rental equipment used in nursing care is returned, the customer subjects it to ozone sterilization for an extended period of time. The company records output from an ozone concentration meter during sterilization, verify-ing that the result obtained by multiplying the ozone concentration by time meets a predeter-mined standard and documenting that fact.
Model: PW3198Customer: Market service department of super computer provider Application: Testing of power supplies at fa-cilities where servers will be installed before delivery and analyzing issues after deliveryThe customer’s testing targets single-phase power supplies, and they use channels 1 and 4, with channel 1 measuring the interphase voltage and channel 4 measuring the power-to-ground voltage (ground noise). The dealer conducts testing at the installation site prior to delivery to ensure that a stable power supply is available. The instrument is also used along with a variety of other measuring instruments to investigate the cause of any issues that oc-cur.

Q: Are the PC interfaces for Model 8826 still available?A: No, I’m afraid the optional RS-232C, LAN or GP-IB interfaces for Model 8826 are completely discontinued and no longer available. Please consider the new Model MR8740 that has a maximum of 54 channels and LAN and USB interfaces built-in.
Q: I am current using Model 9291 with Model 3166. Is the 9291 also compatible with Model 3169-20?A: No, I’m afraid the 9291 is a current output sensor with an output ratio of 1000:1. On the other hand, the 3169-20/21 only takes voltage signals. Please use the 9661 or similar voltage output sensors.
Q: What is the technical name of the material that is placed inside the C1000 case to protect the equipment?A: The material is made of EVA, or Ethylene-vinyl acetate, with a hardness of 50.
Q: I’m trying to measure insulation resistance using Model 3454-11 but the readings are so unstable I can’t get a reliable value. Is it because the cable I am measuring is too long? What is the average cable length?A: The 3454 series is designed to measure cables of around 100-200m.
Q: I want to use the 3169-21 to measure an inver ter and to input that signal to an oscil loscope via the A /D output. Is this possible?A: The guaranteed accuracy range on the 3169 series is 45 to 66Hz, which means it should mainly be used on 50/60Hz lines. As such, it is not appropriate for the secondary side of inverters. Please consider the 3390 Power Analyzer.
Q: While zero adjusting Model 3540, we received an “Err1” display. According to the instruction manual, “Err1” is displayed when the count value that can be zero adjusted is exceeded. Does this mean that the instrument needs to be recalibrated or readjusted?
A: When zero adjusting and a resistance other than 0Ω is connected, the 3540 judges that as an anomaly and returns a Err1 display (for example, if a resistance higher than 1mΩ is connected in the 30mΩ range). Please follow the instructions on page 85 of the manual to properly wire and then zero adjust the instrument. If the instrument is connected using only 2 terminals, and you would like to reduce the redundant resistance, please move to a higher range. For example, if the redundant resistance is 2mΩ, and you are seeing Err1 in the 30mΩ range (1.00mΩ display), you can try to adjust in the 300mΩ range.
Q: I loaded previously measured data back into Model 3196 but I can’t seem to see the voltage or current waveforms.A: Please check the following:
Did an Error display after loading the data? -- No
Is “Analyze” shown on the upper right corner of the screen? -- Yes
When the screen is in VIEW mode, you should be able to see the currently mea-sured values of the 3196.
When the screen is in TIME PLOT mode, you should be able to see the trend graph.
When the screen is in EVENT mode, you should be able to see an event list. Choose an event and ENTER. The volt-age and current waveforms should ap-pear.
Q: Can I use the extension cable I purchased through a semi-custom order for Model 3290 with the CT6590+CT969X bundle?
A: Yes. However, the amplitude accuracy is guaranteed only up to a 100m length, and the phase accuracy is guaranteed only up to 10m.

Final Quarter of 2012It’s hard to believe that we have already entered into the final quarter of this year. In 2012, we continued to be plagued by problems in the global economy, resulting in a fur ther decrease in HIOKI sales compared to 2011. However, despite the severe conditions, please do your utmost to match the performance you achieved last year by pouring more effor ts into promoting our newest products, such as the new IR4056/4057-20 Insulation Testers, FT6380/FT6381 Earth Resistance Testers, and the LR8431-20 MEMORY HiLOGGER, which are quickly picking up the pace. Widen your sales activities and use the many new products as the driving force to reach and even surpass your target. At the same time, HIOKI pledges to support you in your proactive strategies by continuing to work closely with each and every one of you so that we can achieve sales growth together.
HIOKI Internet Pricing PolicyIn recent years, HIOKI has been receiving questions about our Internet policy from our distributors. As you know, anyone can take a look at the prices of goods on the Internet, including HIOKI products.
As an example, HIOKI sells through the Internet via the HIOKI website in Japan. Basically, we only indicate the Japanese list price and frankly, the HIOKI domestic sales departments do not expect a large amount of orders to come from online sources because HIOKI has established distribution channels throughout Japan. In some countries, however, the online business is becoming very common even

for test and measurement products. On such occasions, HIOKI products are sold on the Internet through online distributors.
In general, HIOKI does not control the list price for distributors and subsidiaries; as such, strategic pricing in one country might affect other countries. In order to establish the HIOKI brand name, we hope to avoid any parallel trading between countries. The organization that promotes the product has the right to obtain the order and enjoy the profit. As of now, although we are not controlling prices in each country, we continue to try to establish HIOKI as a global brand under efficient and reasonable ways.
As a f irst step, HIOKI asks our all of subsidiaries and distributors to promote and sell HIOKI products in their own territories. However, since commercial laws are different from county and country, we cannot officially prevent parallel trading, including sales beyond territorial borders using the Internet. Nevertheless, we will continue to monitor the current situation and consider a counter policy if they are causing big problems in your territory. Please continue to inform us when a potential sale is being countered by online sales.
