President’s Message

Corona virus. Covid 19. Pandemic. Dire. Unprecedent-ed. These are the words that have been bandied about for the last several months and we are all able to define them. However, let us not allow them to define us. While our Newcomer activities have been drastically curtailed, we as a group remain united and committed to rolling with the punches as we adjust to our new reality. We are able to see each other via Zoom at book clubs, General meetings, and even mahjong and canasta games online. Of course nothing can take the place of actually being together and those of us who partici-pate in pickle ball, golf , boogie boarding, beach walking and biking are able to do just that, albeit with social distancing procedures. We encourage all of you to join in the fun of one or more of these activities and demonstrate our resilien-cy! Going forward we hope to add to this list of things we can do together while still following the guidelines for safety. “We are all in this together” sounds like a platitude but it is espe-cially true for our Newcomers group. With determination and dedication we can make the transition from life as we knew it to this new “life-quake”. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible either in person or virtually and remain dedi-cated to making the best of what this year has to offer. Elaine Frassanito

A Warm Welcome to our Newest Members. Introducing . . .

Paula Carroll, Encinitas By the time you read this, Paula and Jim Carroll will have just moved into 318 Melrose Avenue in Encinitas. They were still loading the moving van in Houston as July turned to August. Paula was born in Venezuela to American parents, and she lived there until the family moved to Singapore for her last two years of high school. Fortunately, she married someone of a similar background, and before long, they were off to Spain, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Venezuela. Paula has taught middle school in Thai-land, Vietnam and Indonesia at the International schools. While visiting California, Paula ran into a group of walkers, and she asked if they walked often. The Encinitas Walking Group invited her to join them whenever she was in town, and the rest is history!

Catherine Cramton, Del Mar

Catherine and Peter Cramton moved to Highland Avenue in Del Mar to be closer to fami-ly members in Los Angeles and to enjoy the wonderful Southern California climate. Her lifelong passions have been learning and writing. As a journalist she learned about peo-ple and situations; later as a management professor and researcher. She loved the op-portunity to understand other people’s perspectives, and she’s spent periods of time in Italy, Germany, Australia, India and Tunisia. Recently retired, Catherine’s interests in-clude culture and language, cooking, painting, tennis and bridge.

Lynne Hamontree, Encinitas Lynne describes herself in three words: sincere, health-minded, and a nature enthusiast. She and her husband, Steve moved to Encinitas from Charleston, South Carolina to be closer to some of their family members, including their youngest son. Lynne frankly ad-mits that to be 60 years old and not really knowing anyone in a new location can be ra-ther daunting, so she’s delighted to have found our Newcomers Club. Lynne is still a working artist and remains affiliated with a gallery in Charleston. She and Steve have been enjoying the cooler weather, hiking, surfing and great excellent restaurants in and around San Diego.

Anne Kutchera, Carlsbad Now living in Carlsbad, Anne and her husband moved here from Salt Lake City -- but also spent over 12 years in Anchorage, AK. She’s a retired cardiac sonographer, specialized in performing echocardiograms; Bill is a retired cardiologist. We’re thankful to Melissa An-derson for introducing Anne to our club so she could form friendships and enjoy club ac-tivities. She plays golf, enjoys the beach, and wants to attend a Christian church. Her passions include tap dancing, singing, and learning to play the piano. And if that’s not ambitious enough, Anne did something even more adventurous two years ago when she, Bill, and friends biked through France and Germany.

Janet Montgomery, Del Mar Janet is a California native! She was born in Los Angeles at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital and lived in the Elysian Heights/Echo Park and the Northridge areas as a child. After marrying Herb, they resided in Simi Valley for 15 years, then in the San Francisco Bay area-Orinda for another 20 years. Danville was their home until recently, when they moved to their present home in Del Mar. She had a remarkably successful career as an educator, teaching many outstanding young people. Janet and Herb enjoy traveling, and some of their favorite countries are China, Turkey, Russia and Ecuador.

Welcoming One More New Member: Susan Oliver, Encinitas Susan recently retired as corporate Vice President for LPL Finan-cial in San Diego. Earlier in her career she worked at a few other companies; however, her favorite time was spent as a business consultant for other companies, like Qualcomm, The Irvine Com-pany, AMN, etc. Now, as a retiree, Susan’s looking forward to her next chapter in life. So far she has been enjoying playing pickle-ball, walking, cooking and reading. Although Susan is not a big travel enthusiast, she does want to explore that world, particularly within the U.S.A.

The Wide Circumference of Love, by Marita Golden. “A moving African-American family drama of love and devotion in the face of Alzheimer’s disease.” Valentine, by Elizabeth Wetmore. “Written with . . . haunting emotional power . . ., an astonishing debut novel that explores the lingering effects of a brutal crime on the women of one small Texas oil town in the 1970s.

In addition, please let Judy know if you have read a book you like and would be willing to lead the discussion. The primary focus of this book club is books that tell the story of the arc of a woman’s growth in the face of adversity, though there is definitely latitude.

Lunch Bunch: Wed, Sep 2, 12 noon

"Lunch bunch", a new activity proposed by Mona Angel, would meet every other month from Sep-tember to June on the first Wednesday of the month. We would meet at a restaurant with outdoor seating, maybe even with an ocean view, and practice social distancing while dining in small groups. If you are interested in this please contact Mona Angel, [email protected]. Once we have an idea of how many are interested we will iron out the details. We hope this will be a good opportunity for making more personal, yet safe, connections with others

Mah Jongg: Many of us are logging into www.realmahjongg.com to play alone against the computer or with oth-ers. This works well on a tablet or desktop and simulates a live game well. It’s free for the first two weeks, $5.99 a month after that and easy to cancel. If you use the option “looking for players” ma-vens from all over may join you for a game or two or you can set up a game with friends or look for other Newcomers playing and join them. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS!

If you want your Real Mahjongg ID added to our Newcomer list, please send me your real mah jongg name and your ID. I hope to send a completed list to our Real Mahjongg players. We hope to make new members feel welcome and encourage everyone to form a group, join a group, or substitute. Please indicate if you prefer a slow, moderate or fast game. Thanks, Mari Siegel [email protected]

Make sure to register on Evite here where you will find what ingredients to buy to make the dish and other details.

(TENTATIVE) Moderated Discussion: Thur, Sep 24, 10:30A The moderated discussion will center around the film The Cuban (see below), views on how society cares for the elderly, the process of aging, and the role of music and the arts in brain stimulation.

Recommended: Watch the Canadian independent film ‘The Cuban’ (2019, 109 minutes) in which Cuban jazz sparks a life-changing bond between a nursing home patient, Luis Garcia, who is suffering from vascular dementia and the beginnings of Alzheimer’s. Luis is portrayed by Louis Gossett Jr. (Sgt. Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman, 1982). Until a new caretaker arrives, Luis' accomplished past goes unrecognized by the people around him, and at its haunting best the movie suggests a multitude of unknown lives and experiences among the ware-housed elderly. The film was scripted by Alessandra Piccione and directed by Sergio Navar-retta. The cast includes Ana Golja as Mina and Kris (Giacomo Gianniotti, of Grey’s Anato-my).

The film can be streamed, $12 here (Angelika Film Center and Café). Once purchased you have 3 days to watch it. More information will be coming via email.

Welcome Social: Mon, Sep 21, 9:30A Please join us for a Welcome Social on Zoom at 9:30 AM on the third Monday of each month. Our first meeting will be on September 21. Grab a cup of coffee, meet a few new people and ask any questions you may have about our club. RSVP to Cheryl Prince [email protected] and you’ll be sent the Zoom information a couple of days before our meeting. Look-ing forward to seeing you! All are welcome.
