    MAKING AN IMPACT

  • Dear Friends,

A year’s work at the Y is like the making of a quilt. We take the pieces—each one a part of our service to the community—and stitch them together into something beautiful that shows the work of many hands united for one purpose. Through this process of creation, the whole truly becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

This patchwork includes the people who make our work possible: our board, volunteers, donors and corporate partners, and staff. We would not be able to serve without their commitment, and we are grateful for their energy and wisdom.

One of the exciting new pieces of our “quilt” is YMCA Camp Watia. This June the camp opened its doors to 550 campers and the feedback has been overwhelming. Parents thanked us for an affordable overnight camp for their children and told us of their children’s pride in participating in so many new activities. We are honored to offer the life-changing experience of overnight camp to today’s young people and to future generations.

The new Safety Around Water program extended our commitment to youth well-being. We were chosen as one of ten YMCAs nationwide to pilot the initiative, which addresses dangerous gaps in water safety knowledge among children from different racial and ethnic backgrounds. Over 140 children learned life-saving skills during the eight-lesson program.

As we have since 2013, we continue to address food insecurity throughout the region. Our Healthy Living Food Pantry, Mobile Market, and Mobile Kitchens are vital community resources; since October 2015 they have distributed over 122,000 pounds of food to 7,140 families.

We also made significant progress on an innovative program created here at the YMCA of WNC. Taking Control of Type 2™ empowers those living with type 2 diabetes to manage their health. A combination of education, group support, and a free Y membership gives participants tools to make lifestyle changes that lead to big improvements in their well-being. We see encouraging results that speak to improved health outcomes for participants and decreased costs for our clinical partners.

As we expand our offerings and continue our pursuit of excellence, one thing remains unchanged: our dedication to programs and services that support youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Thank you for your trust in us as we work to strengthen community for all.

  • YMCA CAMP WATIABuilding character, inspiring smiles

This summer we opened the doors of YMCA Camp Watia, an overnight summer camp nestled in over 900 acres of mountain wilderness and created to make the unique and life-changing experience of overnight camp accessible for all families.

Over the course of the summer, campers whooshed down the water slide into Watia Pond, held impromptu lunch-time dance parties in the Glass Lodge, and gathered fireside for group reflection.

YMCA Camp Watia was ten-year-old Luc’s first extended overnight camp. His single mother, Lauren, has worked hard to instill in Luc the importance of community service through regular volunteer work. At first Luc protested, but now he is an enthusiastic leader. YMCA Camp Watia gave Luc the opportunity to live his values daily. Because of the camp’s intimate environment, Luc’s selflessness was encouraged and appreciated. During the closing ceremony of his stay, Luc was

given the “I Am Third” award, recognizing how in his words and deeds he put values and faith first, community second, and himself third.

In a message to the camp’s executive director, Lauren wrote, “The ‘I Am Third’ award solidified for me that Luc ‘gets it.’ I am so proud of the young man he is becoming. My heart soared. I am forever grateful for, and humbled by, his week-long adventure with your staff and the beauty of Watia. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to a wonderful experience.”

“Thank you so much for everything you and your team do to make YMCA Camp Watia so special.”

    Andrea, a camp parent

  • TAKING CONTROL OF TYPE 2TMBetter habits, better health

Type 2 diabetes affects 14% of adults in Western North Carolina. For many, the diagnosis is accompanied by fear of how they will manage a disease that can have devastating complications and dramatically increases their risk of heart disease or stroke.

Taking Control of Type 2 wraps around existing diabetes self-management programs and works with participants to ease those fears. It empowers those living with type 2 through education and support. The small-group program includes guidance from a wide range of health professionals, peer support from others facing the same health challenges, and a family membership to the Y to ensure access to exercise and other well-being resources.

The program is making a difference. Since the program’s start in 2013, participants have lost a combined 2,000 pounds and seen their A1C drop an average of 1.9, from 8.3 to 6.4. This translates into reduced medication dependence and fewer

complications, but also shows how participants are able to use their new knowledge to make small changes that add up to big results.

One participant, Crystal, was eager for strategies to control her condition and found the tools she needed to make that happen. “I went off meds after three months and lost 27 pounds by changing my eating habits and practicing portion control. I’ve learned that I control diabetes—diabetes doesn’t control me! It can be hard to stay on track, but it’s what I want to do.”

“When I was first told I had diabetes I felt hopeless, now I have a plan. I can do it. I got this.”

  • SAFETY AROUND WATERLife-saving skills for all children

The statistics are alarming: three children die in the United States each day from drowning, making it the second-leading cause of death for youth ages 5–14. Equally troubling are the racial and ethnic disparities surrounding children and water safety: 70% of African American and 60% of Hispanic children do not know how to swim, compared to 40% of their Caucasian peers.

To address the real-life risk to the children represented by these figures, Y-USA selected ten Ys nationwide to pilot the Safety Around Water program, and the YMCA of WNC was honored to be chosen as one of the pilot sites. The eight-lesson program prepares children for when they find themselves unexpectedly in water and gives them the knowledge and skills they need to be safe. Thanks to generous support from Y-USA and Pardee Hospital, the Y was able to bring Safety Around Water’s crucial life-saving skills to 145 high-risk youth this summer.

One fourth-grade boy, Zhane, trembled as he approached the pool on the first day. Fearful, he started the program clinging to one of the volunteer instructors, hesitant to let go. Lesson by lesson, with guidance and cheers from the instructors, Zhane mastered skills and gained confidence. At the final lesson, Zhane had conquered his fears. He walked onto the pool deck, fastened his lifejacket, and, with an ear-to-ear smile, jumped confidently into the shallow end of the pool to join the fun, knowing he had the skills to be safe.

Nearly 14% of residents in the Y’s service area live with food insecurity, meaning they lack dependable access to affordable, healthful food. Since 2013, the Y has addressed this gap through its Nutrition Programs, which deliver wholesome food and nutrition education to those in need.

Through the Healthy Living Food Pantry and the Healthy Living Mobile Market and Mobile Kitchens, the Y ensures that fresh produce, whole grains, and lean proteins are available to everyone. Serving urban and rural communities, these inclusive programs allow everyone to eat for health, regardless of income.

The food distributions are meeting genuine community needs. One client wrote, “As a single mom of two picky eaters, our food bill is never cheap. The pantry at the Y was a breath of fresh air. A lot of it was organic, and it often looked fresher than what was in the grocery stores. I like that they included realistic recipes

for folks on a budget—using ingredients that they offered free and in abundance. Our family is now in a more stable financial situation, but I am still grateful knowing that in a pinch I can turn to the Y pantry.”

In 2015, the Y was honored to be chosen as the beneficiary of the annual Biltmore Benefit fundraiser. Thanks to the generous support of the Biltmore Company and the benefit’s sponsors and donors, a second mobile kitchen joined the fleet, expanding the programs’ geographic range and deepening the Y’s impact in Western North Carolina.

VOLUNTEERISMThe YMCA of WNC was founded over 125 years ago as a volunteer-led organization. Today, volunteers remain the lifeblood of the YMCA of Western North Carolina, the thread that binds us together and keeps us strong.

Last year, we were honored to have nearly 700 volunteers share their time and talents with the Y, for a total of 23,550 hours. Their dedication is seen in programs such as youth sports, where they are extra hands and hearts to children as they grow and play. In the centers, volunteer greeters are the friendly faces that make members feel welcome and valued. Volunteers with our nutrition programs create a connection for hope at our food pantry and mobile distributions.

Throughout the association, in whatever role they choose, volunteers work alongside employees to embody our four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility and to further our goal of strengthening community. We are truly grateful for them.
