Letter from the PresidentThe District Assembly is coming up this weekend, and this year ALL Rotarians are encouraged to attend, whether you will be holding a position on the club board or not. It will give you a great opportunity to learn about the role and responsibilities of the committees.
More details are given below. If you would like to attend, please let me know ASAP, as I need to give final attendance figures from our club by Friday.
Yours in Rotary,Simone
Last Week’s MeetingSue Fielding’s address on Wills and probate was of interest to all in attendance. Sue is very experienced in this area and answered a number of questions posed by members. We all left the meeting better informed. One of the most relevant pieces of information was regarding Superannuation. Many thought that it would be covered in our wills however, we now understand
that in the majority of cases separate arrangements need to be made to ensure Superannuation goes to the beneficiaries intended.
This Week's MeetingOriginally scheduled for June (“Fellowships”) month, but rearranged due to other speakers not being able to come until June, Simone will be talking this week about the Rotarians on Social Networks Fellowship she founded and using social networking for Rotary purposes in general.
Two thirds of our club have Facebook accounts, but not all those people use Facebook regularly. Learn about privacy issues, what the point of social networking is, and how we can best use it to promote our club and our activities – for free!

Indigenous ProgramsAs the incoming DG for 2011-2012 for District 9455, I would like District 9455 To Make A Difference in developing a positive relationship with the Indigenous People in our District.
I am not interested in "talkfests" or "who is to blame chest beating exercises" on this issue, as they have little interest for most Rotarians and run the risk of "Politicising Rotary and Rotarians".
But I am very interested in our District 9455 helping Clubs get involved in practical, grass roots activities that are planned, with definite timelines and have the involvement of the appropriate indigenous groups.
I believe programs such as Generation One team offers our District a unique opportunity to highlight Rotary's willingness to "get involved" without asking us to "give money". Very simply, are Rotarians who run businesses employing people willing to take on suitably t r a i n e d i n d i g e n o u s employees?
There may be other many other initiatives of which you are aware and I would welcome you tabling these for discussion.
This is an open invitation to every Rotarian in District 9455 to register their interest and ideas.
If there is a reasonable level of interest, as your 2011-2012 DG, I will ask 2011-2012 District Community Chair Ian Hutton to formally establish an Indigenous Involvement Committee in our District.
On the other hand, if there is little interest, then there will be no recognised District 9 4 5 5 I n d i g e n o u s Involvement Committee in 2011-2012.
I look forward in anticipation to your feedback.
Cheers .... Liz

General Meeting to Alter the RulesAt the regular meeting of the Club last Wednesday, a General Meeting of the RCFBCFI was held to alter a number of the rules to assist the Charity Fund to operate more efficiently.
Despite due notice, an Agenda, the proposed changes and proxy forms being distributed to every member of the Club, there
was only one proxy form returned and insufficient members (75%) in attendance to conform with the requirements to vote in the changes.
Due to this, the entire process will need to recommence. To avoid the previous scenario, all members will be requested to submit proxy forms so that if they are not at the next meeting set down to ‘Alter the Rules ‘of the Charity Fund, there will at least be enough votes to proceed with the changes.
Magnifying Microscope ProjectLast week the 1,000 units were received by the Club. On Wednesday 996 of these were distributed to local clubs Applecross, Armadale, Booragoon, Byford Southern Districts and Willetton, as well as regional Clubs Boulder, Bridgetown, B ro o m e , C a r n a r v o n , Hannan’s Kalgoorlie, Harvey and Kalgoorlie, plus the Rotary Club of Hobart, Tas.
As the last of the payments for the microscopes distributed some time ago was only received a couple of weeks back, the new policy in the Club is to request pre payment of the units. This is proving to be extremely successful with payment for Hobart (who were only invoiced last week when delivery costs were known) and three other clubs still to have their cheques received. The three Clubs have all indicated that their payments are in the mail or will be received by us this week. Country Clubs have been sent a second invoice for delivery costs, hence a minimal amount of money is still outstanding.
With the pre payment system it has allowed the RCFB to pay the $12,500 invoice from the Science Teacher’s Association of WA
immediately. Otherwise, our Club, with its limited funds, would not have been able to do so.
There are still almost 800 units on backorder and one Club has already payed for their entire order (60 from the one just received and 120 from next delivery). The following shipment is due to arrive in mid to late June.
Finalists in the Citizen of the Year AwardsRtn Prof. Ralph Martins and Manna Industries have both received advice that they are finalists in the WA Citizen of the Year Awards, to be announced at a dinner on Sat. 28th May. Ralph is in the category of the Professions and Bev and John Lowe from Manna Industries are in the Gold Swan category. A few years back Rotary International won the Gold Swan Award.
Manna IndustriesOn Friday morning Bill Hasssell and Ken Colllins attended the official opening of a new kitchen in the Forrestfield Primary School. The Rotary Club of Northbridge funded the facility.
Manna Industries continues to make an incredible contribution to the needy, the homeless and disadvantaged children with the meals and clothing packages that they provide. Another area that they are involved with is the ‘seniors’ and Chevron are assisting with funding by sponsoring part or all of the costs of feeding the ‘seniors’ administered to by Manna Industries.

Would all members please put Thursday, 30th June in their diaries for the annual Club Changeover.
It will be held at the Nedlands Golf Club and further details of time and cost will be advised in due course.
To support the changeover of Pres Simone to President Elect Bryant, would all members and partners please make every effort to attend and also invite as many guests as possible to make it a successful event.
Interact ClubAfter a break for the school holidays the Interact Club of Freshwater Bay will recommence meeting this Thursday, 12th May. They will be presented with a beautiful jarrah lectern, gavel and base, all hand crafted by PDG Bill Benbow. It is hoped that the remainder of the items ordered from Rotary Down Under Supplies for the Club will also arrive in time for the meeting and in due time to have the President’s Collar and Collar Bar engraved prior to Thursday’s meeting.
From the District Governor’s DeskRotary International ConventionThe Rotary International Convention is being held this year on May 21 - 25 in New Orleans. It promises to be an exciting event with something like 18,000 delegates. There are a number from our District attending and I look forward to giving you a report on how it goes. It will also be good to see how New Orleans is recovering from the hurricane and ensuing floods it experienced only a few years ago.
ShelterBoxLast month I was pleased to report that our District had contributed a large number of ShelterBoxes in response to the tsunami that devastated Japan. I can now confirm that we have
reached the 100 mark. This is a tremendous effort fro m our District, particularly given the other disasters that have occurred this year in our region and the response from Clubs to the needs of those affected.
The ballot of Clubs to determine if District 9455 would join ShelterBox Australia as a Multi Rotary District Supported Project was concluded and the proposal was approved. I have advised ShelterBox of our decision and the process to establish the new Multi Rotary District Supported Project is progressing.
InteractInductions to establish the new Freshwater Bay Interact Club were carried out on 14th April. There were 17 inductees on the evening with 3 or 4 others still to be inducted. This is a community based Interact Club in that it has members from four different schools in the area. It is the second Interact Club in our District and my congratulations go the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay for its achievement in establishing this new Interact Club.
Water and Sanitation ProjectsRotary International has used appointed regional coordinators to monitor and promote Water and Sanitation projects. At the same time, the Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group (WASRAG) has also been active in supporting projects of this nature. After a review of arrangements this year, the Rotary International Board recently decided that it will no longer appoint Regional Coordinators for Water and Sanitation but instead will rely on WASRAG to coordinate and promote these projects.
Group Study ExchangeOur Special Focus Exchange team from Wiluna has completed its visit to Fiji and has returned to Western Australia and home in Wiluna. Reports from team leader PDG Hugh Lavery indicate the visit by our team has been a great success. Hugh has remained in Fiji to assist the Fiji team with its preparation for a visit to Western Australia which is now planned to start towards the end of this June.
Our Group Study Exchange team that will visit District 1880 in Germany departs for Germany towards the end of May and will return towards the end of June. The team has been preparing for its visit to Germany including German lessons and having a weekend in Busselton to get to know each other better. I was pleased to have the opportunity to visit the Rotary Club of Swan Valley on 18th April when the outbound team gave its presentation. It was excellent and I am confident the team will represent our Australia and our District really well when away. The team has started a blog; follow the link on this page to get more information on the team.
District AssemblyThe District Assembly for Metropolitan Clubs is being held on 15th May. There will also be a number of Assemblies held in regional areas including that at Cunderdin on 9th May. All Clubs should ensure that as many of their incoming Board Members as possible should attend these Assemblies and, in country areas in particular where training opportunities are limited, as many Rotarians as possible should participate.
District ChangeoverDistrict Changeover this year is to be held on Saturday 2nd July at the Mount Lawley Golf Club. It should be a great fun evening. Flyers advertising the event have been circulated to Clubs.
Foundation and Polio PlusClubs are asked to review their contributions to the Annual Program Fund and to give particular consideration to making a donation to the fight against polio. We are getting close to beating this disease but we cannot afford to relax. Please make your donations soon.

Pink Jeep Delivers Prenatal Care to Rural Haiti Rotary International News5 May 2011Photos by Alyce Henson/Rotary Images
A bright pink Jeep Wrangler, staffed with four midwives, races along uneven, dusty roads to reach more than 50 pregnant women in Darlegrand, a rural town two hours north of Hinche, Haiti.
The Jeep belongs to Midwives for Haiti , a nonprofit organization working to ensure that women in remote parts of the country have access to prenatal care and skilled birth attendants. Without the Jeep, many of the women, who have traveled to the daylong February clinic in Darlegrand, would not receive proper medical attention.

The Rotary Club of Western Henrico County, Virginia, USA, along with Bon Secours Health Systems and local i n d i v i d u a l d o n o r s , contributed a total of US$70,000 to purchase the Jeep, customized for rugged terrain. More than $20,000 of that amount came from the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, a donor advised fund set up by The Rotary Foundation.
Rotarians around the world are working to reduce maternal mortality rates and improve access to essential medical services for mothers and their children. Maternal and child health is one of Rotary's areas of focus .
More than 340,000 women worldwide die each year from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth, most of them preventable. On 5 May, midwives and their supporters c e l e b r a t e t h e International Day of the
Midwife -- launched by the International Confederation of Midwives in 1992 -- to raise awareness of their role in reducing maternal and child mortality.
Nadene Brunk, founder and executive director of Midwives for Haiti, says long distances, inadequate transportation, and lack of information on basic prenatal care contribute to Haiti's maternal mortality rate, the highest in the Western Hemisphere. A Haitian woman's lifetime risk of dying in childbirth is 1 in 44.
The off-road vehicle allows the midwives to reach some of Haiti's most remote villages, says Brunk. "I believe Midwives for Haiti
can expand so that every woman can have access to a skilled birth attendant."
