Letter from the PresidentOur two meetings in January have been club forums to look at what we have achieved so far this Rotary year, and to discuss and agree on changes to implement in the club.

From here on in, every meeting in a 2 month period will have a different focus: one will be a committee meeting (with meetings in the alternate months being conducted electronically), and the other meetings will each focus on a different topic, such as vocations, community projects, youth, fundraising, training, and so on.

The idea is to mix things up a little, so that some meetings will still be like they have been to date, with a speaker (internal or external) following reports and announcements, but other meetings may be mini forums run by a particular committee to seek ideas and feedback from the whole club about projects and activities, or may be a vocational visit, a panel session, a hands-on project, social event, presentation about projects that have been completed, or whatever the committee responsible for

that focus would like to do. It is hoped this will enable greater participation by all members at meetings, rather than each meeting being a rather passive event.

I have lined up a few speakers in February in different topics, and will work with the committee directors to schedule a more varied program for the remainder of this Rotary year.

Yours in Rotary,Simone

Last Week's MeetingAlthough we were due for a committee meeting, a regular business meeting was conducted this week for feedback from all members.

Assistant Governor Kay and Malcolm Mason joined us, as did Max Hipkin's wife Merran, who arrived in time to catch the tail end of Max being inducted into the club.

The bulk of the discussion

focused on our meeting format, with the outcomes discussed in the President's letter.

President Simone also sought feedback on options for online discussion groups for committees on our club website, which she was willing to build if members were willing to use it! It was agreed that Simone would set up the website with those facilities, and spend a meeting in late February / early March showing members how it works, with one-on-one training available

as needed.

Next MeetingPlease note that there is NO MEETING on January 26th with the public holiday. Our next meeting will be on February 2nd.

We will be kicking off World Understanding Month with a speaker recommend by Friend of the Club Lynette Packer. Wajipha Chongwe grew up in Zambia and will give a presentation about Cultural Identity.

Wajipha is a lovely young performing artist with a fascinating story. Her Father was in the first wave of African students to study here in Perth, and is now a Human Rights Lawyer.

Humanitarian Award

Rob Pearce is a talented sculptor as well as a plastic surgeon. At the meeting, Rob passed around a medallion he has made and offered the club the opportunity to use it as an annual ‘Humanitarian Award’ to an outstanding organisation or individual.

The idea was enthusiastically endorsed, and a sub-committee will be set in place.

Books for IndiaRajah Senathirajah made contact with the Rotary Club of Madurai in India to obtain a progress report on the project. Quote from the email:“In my view, books are very wonderful. I am waiting for feedback from schools (the books are send to many schools in our RI District 3000). Till now the feedback

is very good. Thanks from me and our district members. We love to do more projects, to help the world needy people.

Thanks & Regards,we in Rotary service,Rtn. P.J. Sridhar.”

Rotary Youth Driver AwarenessPP Lindsay Frances reported to Sec Di that not only 210 students from Newman College have registered for the RYDA in August, but 30 students from Donna Bicknell’s school, Ellenbrook Secondary College have also registered. Donna will be coordinating Ellenbrook Secondary College.

We will require at least six volunteers on each of the days the RYDAs are run (three days) plus sponsorship to assist with funding each day. Cost to the club will be in the region of $1,000 per day so any members who have contacts who may be prepared to o ffer sponsorship for this fantastic project please see what you are able to put in place.

Interact ClubEarly in the school year Ken will proceed with an interest meeting at Christ Church Grammar with the aim to starting a community-based Interact Club.

Ken is seeking members who are prepared to assist with Interact. Members involved must hold a ‘Working with Children’ card.

Our Badge ManufacturerPDG Maurice Hill from Launceston, Tasmania. has been making the Club’s

badges at an extremely reasonable price. Maurice has been unwell for the past couple of years and has now retired. A member of his Rotary Club’s wife, Faye Owers, has taken over Labels and Badges and will continue to provide the same standard and prompt reliable service.

Maurice has been very generous to the Club in providing all services postage free. Faye will continue with the excellent badge prices, however, will be charging us postage so there will be a small increase in cost.

Upcoming FundraiserRob Rohrlach announced that he’d been in contact with the cook at Scotch College whom he has invited to assist w i t h j u d g i n g t h e competition. Wilma McBain was able to facilitate the contact.

Magnifying MicroscopesRob Rohrlach announced that 14 clubs have now put 1500 microscopes into 71 schools. The Rotary Club of Kenwick recently requested microscopes for a further three schools. The project is gathering momentum!

Community Service ProjectsMembers are invited to recommend projects for the C o m m u n i t y / Vo c a t i o n a l Service Committee. Please put forward ideas of what you would like to see the club support in the local community.

Rotary Turns 106 February 23rd is Rotary’s 106th birthday and is d e s i g n a t e d W o r l d Understanding and Peace Day.

This year it falls on one of our meeting days so the Dean of Perth, John Shepherd has accepted an invitation to address our club's meeting. John is a member of the RC of Perth and a most entertaining speaker, John will talk about the major achievements of Rotary in its 106 years of service.

This is a great meeting to invite guests along to.

Bus for Dentists in CambodiaThe bus for the One-2-One Dental Group in Cambodia, purchased via the Good Eve Foundation and a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant, should be delivered and handed over to the dental group in Cambodia on 10th February.

Tony Munday will travel to Phnom Penh for the handover and if any members of the Club are able to join him, they’d be most welcome.

National Youth Science ForumSimone and Marcos hosted Casey and Lucy, while Ken and D i h o s t e d Tayesha and Caitlin last Sunday, a day designated for students at the NYSF to catch up on washing and rest after their first week, in readiness for the final week at the Science Forum. Students reported that it was a wonderful experience for all involved and they were gaining a great deal from it.

There were fewer Rotarian host families this year as some clubs have not encouraged members to obtain ‘Working with Children’ cards, which is a necessity for any Rotarians involved with youth projects in the under 18 age bracket.

Polio Film Night“Conviction' starring Hilary Swank, Sam Rockwell and

Minnie Driver, will be screened on Sunday 20th February at the Greater Union Cinema, Morley Galleria.

Tickets are $15.00 each, of which $5.00 will be credited to our club for PolioPlus.

Tickets will be available at the next meeting from Ken Collins.

Queensland FloodsThe challenge has been put up by a great Rotarian and philanthropist Mr Stan Perron AM.

Stan will match giving by individuals, not clubs or businesses, to the District 9455 Queensland Flood Appeal up to $50,000. Please dig deep into those generous pockets and help relieve Mr Stan Perron of his $50,000. PDG Errol Wildman, the Flood Relief Coordinator for DG Anne Brand of District 9630, and I have been in constant contact. Their District is in desperate need of bedding etc. The plan is to get the generous Rotarians and clubs of District 9455 to pool their funds and purchase, through the manufacturer based in W.A. as many as the funds will allow of mattresses, sheets, pillows and covers, then send them to District 9630. Some will say ‘it would be best to send the funds and purchase them there’ and I have thought this myself but there are thousands of homes flooded, and their factories are not working because of floods, and the supply of bedding is very short to nonexistent. They cannot purchase any supplies, but we can, so that families and children can sleep comfortably in their own homes. District Treasurer Clive Bain is looking into the options of achieving tax deductibility for this project and should be able

to advise us in the next few days. In the meantime, it would be appreciated if each Club could collate pledges from individuals and report that tally to me via the email at [email protected] Again please reach into your vaults and lend a helping hand to our fellow Rotarians in their hour of need. Thank you Ron GearyDistrict 9455 Disaster Response Coordinator

Carnarvon Floods Much of Carnarvon was protected by the levee banks and in that respect, Carnarvon was lucky and there isn’t the same demand for assistance as there is from communities in Queensland. The plantations that line the river, several caravan parks, and a few other businesses like a concrete batching plant and the petrol stations have suffered substantial damage. The Rotary Club of Carnarvon is continuing to investigate and assess opportunities for Rotary to assist and in the meantime they have asked Rotarians and Clubs to provide the following assistance:

• When shopping, ask for Carnarvon product. Enough enquiries should assist the growers.

• Seek legal and accounting professionals to register to give preliminary pro-bono advice. What is envisaged is that questions regarding insurance claims and other matters associated with businesses and individuals will arise, probably within the next month, and professionals willing to give preliminary advice on the telephone indicating what options might be open to the individual concerned could be of real benefit. People wishing to

register should give their names to Ron Geary.

District ConferenceRegistrations for the Joint Districts 9455 and 9465 Conference at the Burswood Convention Center on 25 to 27 March this year are open and being received. Please also note that 50 Rooms have been reserved at discount rates at the Holiday Inn (in the Burswood complex) and bookings should be made on the attached form.

Member MovementsIt was great to have Rob Pearce, Bryant Stokes, Hamish Mackie, Margaret Stuart and Warren Milner back with us this week.

Marcos Carot Collins has taken a leave of absence from the club, and plans to transfer to a more convenient club.

A New Approach to RotaryKatie Ischkin, president and founder of the Rotary Club of South Metro Minneapolis Evenings, Minnesota, USA, believes in a new approach to Rotary.

Her Rotary club, chartered

in June, has already grown to 25 members, including 12 new Rotarians who were recruited in a three-month period. The club has signed up for its first Matching Grant and international service project and has participated in more than 10 community service or hands-on volunteer efforts.Ischkin shared her ideas on how to attract young professionals to Rotary during the International Assembly, an annual training event in San Diego, California. As a "proud, young, female Rotarian," she is among only 2 percent of club members worldwide under the age of 30, and only 11 percent under 40.

"We need to focus on generating interest in young people for the future success of Rotary," she said. "We are faced today with the need to grow not just for the sake of numbers but to create strong, young, global leaders who are going to help continue the success of the Rotary organization."

Ischkin advocates a new outlook on membership and a different approach to club structure. As a change management consultant, she

New Horizons: Winner of the District 9450 Bulletin Award for 2009/10

said she understands people's fear of change. But she stressed that her approach doesn't mean altering the core pieces of the organization or losing what Rotarians hold dear.

"What does change are what I call surface-level elements," she said. "The pieces that individual clubs have the power to shift and redesign, such as meeting times and locations, program structures, club member involvement, and committee formats."

Manage expectations

Ischkin's club meets in the evening and lowers costs by not having meals. And it doesn't hold a traditional meeting every week: The third meeting of the month is a happy hour/networking event at different locations in the city, and the fourth meeting is a hands-on volunteering opportunity.

Ischkin added that it's important to understand the mindset of the new generation and manage expectations accordingly.

Younger people are "always on the go and truly connected," she explained, whether it’s through social networking, text messaging, or other means. They face a lot of pressure to be involved in multiple endeavors and to balance work and personal life. As a result, they may be "on call" with their careers, but they are no less dedicated to service.

"When you’re trying to recruit younger members or even sponsor and start a New Generations Rotary club, take time with your club and

committee to outline what your expectations are and whether they will align with the younger generation you are trying to attract and work with," she said. "Not every Rotary club can quickly shift gears to attract younger members; it takes time and baby steps."

But for many clubs, she said, "all it takes is opening up your minds and starting to think differently about the future of your club's membership."
