FIRST ARRIVALS

X WFIS-Europe Assembly – Welcome Discourse Dear Scouts, I remember the first time I met a crazy guy, and what I mean is someone that you wouldn't think was crazy but peculiar. I think Klaus Tegeder didn’t trust me so much in the earlier days but I was looking beyond the moment, because yes, we’re humans we made mistakes but we also can find out the sources to build up something nice again and the moment came, and new hopes arise because we do not deserve what has happened in Scouting. Even this day I have no satisfactory theory about why WFIS is spreading everywhere so fast, we both know that something is going wrong and our movement is in risk but most important that our time is limited so we observe the last words of the Founder and continue to meet the challenge of trying to leave the world a little better than we found it. It is the major purpose of WFIS to maintain the high standards in Scouting under a Promise, a Scout Law and the Patrol System. Those who identify with our aims are welcome to join our ranks but let us always observe the first of all purposes: children as a priority, cradle their present and do not worry about the future. Today, after three years of our first steps in Independent Scouting, others are already following our steps. Traditional Scouting in Spain is still alive and well: Galicia, Catalonia, Madrid and other regions very, very soon. We are witness voices of our groups looking forward. I believe the children are our future, we can’t stop now. Welcome to Barcelona, a city of hopes and projects but over all, city of dreams becoming a reality. Jerry da Silva Matz “Kangur”

ROVERS, JULIE AND THE “MADAME TUSAUD’S WAX STATUE” OF KLAUS

Greetings to all I am taking this opportunity to introduce myself to anyone who doesn’t already know me. I have been a leader in England for 30 years, I work with children of all ages, but especially with Wolf Cubs, Wölflinge :-) I live in the north of England, in the Lake District and Scouting is my passion. I work as a lecturer in computing but all my spare time is taken up with Scouting. I started my Group 9 years ago and we have 92 members. I am responsible for all the Wolf Cubs in the north of England and am a member of the International Training team. Now of course, I am also 2nd Chairman of WFIS, which is a great honor, and I hope that I will be able to learn from the experienced members of the committee and help to keep WFIS the thriving organization that it has become. It is important, that as WFIS grows, we work with all the Associations and their different ideas, and remember that “different” does not mean “wrong”. We must be tolerant of cultural differences, and use the differences as a learning experience, even the most experienced leaders can learn from others, I am certainly keen to see how other Associations do their Scouting. I hope to meet many of you at the workshop in October and at the General Assembly in January, maybe I will see some of you at the Centenary camp in England this summer. I wish everyone a super summer of Scouting, in this special year, as we celebrate 100 years of Scouting. Julie Bryceson

CENTENARY CAMP

Celebrate 100 years of Scouting – 28th July to 4th August 2007 Join us to celebrate 100 years of Scouting since Baden-Powell’s first experimental camp on Brownsea Island. The basic camp fee of £50 per head will include:- camping fees, on site activities (archery, abseiling, climbing, rifle shooting, artificial caving, pioneering and canoeing), plus a morning at the local leisure centre for swimming and sports. There will of course be plenty of opportunities for troop activities, inter troop sports, hikes and of course a massive camp fire for the whole camp. The high point of the week will be a day trip to Brownsea Island on Friday August 3rd. We have already had bookings and expressions of interest from members of WFIS – so it will be a truly international experience, with opportunities to make new friends and discover different Scouting cultures. The camp is open to Scouts, Seniors and Rovers and maximum numbers are 500. The camp will be held at Cricket Camp, which is the SA District camp site for South Itchen near Southampton – we will be taking over the whole site. For further site information go to www.isdsc.org.uk/scouts and click on the link to the site information. The camp fee does not include transport or food. There is an excellent supermarket about 1 mile from the site. Transport to catch the ferry to Brownsea Island if required will be £10 per head. Group bookings, with approximate numbers and a Group deposit of £10 (cheques to Southern Area B-PSA) to Norman Boxall by end of November 2006. Norman’s contact details are: Norman Boxall 238 Shinfield Road Reading RG2 8EX [email protected] Phone 0118 975 3438 Mobile: 0796 995 9331

Baden-Powell Scouts Baden-Powell Scouts was formed in 1970 in order to continue traditional Scouting when major changes were being introduced by WOSM. The Association is divided into 5 areas within the UK, and each Area is led by an Area Commissioner and assisted by Commissioners for each section. B-PSA (UK) is a founder member of the World Federation of Independent Scouts (WFIS). There are 5 sections within the organisation: Beavers, this is the youngest and newest section in the Association, formed in 1982. The Beaver section caters for children between 5 and 7/1/2 -8 years of age. Wolf Cubs, for children aged 71/2-11 years of age. The motto is “Do your best”. Training is based on the Tenderpad, First Star, Second Star and Leaping Wolf, together with a selection of proficiency badges. Scouts, 101/2-15 years of age. The motto is “Be Prepared”. Training is progressive and is based on Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class and Scout Cord.

Senior Scouts, 15-18 years of age. The motto is “Look wide”. Training is based on the Bushmans Thong, and St. George’s Award along with proficiency badges. The St. George’s Award was introduced in 1978 in place of the Queen’s Scout Award (which was copyright to the Scout Association). Rovers, 18 years upward. The motto is “Service”. Rovering provides an opportunity for the adult to develop and extend the skills learned as a Scout, within the community. Rovers can work on the training scheme and the B-P Award or take up Service to the community or Scouting.

Leader training Leader training is organized and run by the Training Team. The first Wood Beads course (in its current format) was held in 1990, with a Cub and Beaver course held in May, followed by a Scout and Senior Scout course in August of the same year. @

Associació Catalana de Scouts – WFIS Catalunya

ACS-WFIS Catalunya was formed in 2003 in order to continue traditional Scouting in our homeland.

The inspiration to form this scout association is the result of a wide existing worry of Catalan scout groups to preserve Scouting under the idea, spirit and forms of the founder, Baden-Powell of Gilwell.

There are 5 sections within the organization: Beavers, our youngest section for children between 6 and 8 years of age. Their highest rank is Keeo Award.

Wolf Cubs, for children between 8 and 11 years of age. The motto is “Tant Com Puc” (DYB). Training is based on the Tenderpad, Bagheera, Baloo and the highest Mowgli Award, together with a selection of proficiency badges. Scouts, 11-15 years of age. The motto is “Sempre a Punt!” (Be Prepared). Training is progressive and is based on Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class and the highest St. George’s Award, together with a selection of merit badges. Senior Scouts, 15-17 years of age. The motto is “Unitat” (Unity). Training is based on 3 different stages plus the highest St. George’s Award along with merit badges. Rovers, 18 years upwards. The motto is “Service”. The same traditional aims and goals ever: Paddle Your Own Canoe.

Training, it’s important to realize that the scheme of Gilwell is the only formula of adult training success in Scouting. @

OUR ASSOCIATIONS

Page 11: New Editor - wfis-europe.org

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Scouting, dear member association, This year we will celebrate the 100 anniversary of scouting, which was founded by Lord Baden Powell. We all could take the chance to show our neighbours’, families and friends, the mayors and the cities and countries, how traditional scouting could be. It is up to us to show the world a proper picture of our way of doing our scouting, then now is the time for the next camping and hiking tours and I would like to mention that we all represent the Scouting today. I would like to invite you to join the next Cub Project the “Circle of Friendship” or the Scout Project “Scouts discover the World”, with your Association, to meet our Scout Brothers and Sisters in Europe and the World.
