With the rapid development of the modern industry, thescale of process system of industry becomes more huge, thesystem functions are more complex, and the geographicaldistribution of system tends to be more distributed. Repre-sentative systems are chemical industrial network, roboticsystems, smart grids, sensor networks, and so on [1–3]. Therapid development of industry system inevitably imposesmuch difficulty on the control system design. Traditionalcontrol system design theory cannot be applied to theselarge-scale systems. The distributed control system integratescontrol, computation, communication technology, and soforth and adapts to the developing trend of industrial controlsystem. However, insertion of communication networks intothe control systems comes at the price of nonideal signaltransmission: the data sent through the networks experiencetime delay or suffer transmission data losses [4]. So far, research attention has been paid to this area; see [5–9] andthe references therein.
In this issue, some research works on large-scale systemsand the related topics are reported. We are proud to noticethat these limited numbers of research works have shown agreat variety and in a sense give a fairly complete picture of thestate-of-the-art research on large-scale systems. In addition, abrief tutorial on large-scale systems from the Editorial Boardis also included in this special issue.
(1) Theoretical studies on the large-scale multiagent sys-tems are reported here. For example, J. Gao et al. discussed
the consensus of multiagent systems, Y. Zhang et al. studiedthe two-dimension first-order multiagent systems, R. Wanget al. discussed the modeling and control of highly flexiblesolar-powered UAVs, and M. Huo et al. focus on the faultreconstruction approach for distributed coordinated space-craft attitude control system.
(2) Theoretical analysis on the time-delay, packet drop-outs in the large-scale networked systems are reported. Forexample, D.-M. Dai discussed the fault detection for net-worked systems based on the reduced-order filter, X. Lu et al.studied the fix-point smoothing for descriptor systems withmultiplicative noise and single delayed observations, W. Yan-feng et al. considered the fault-tolerant control for networkedcontrol systems with limited information in case of actuatorfault, S. Zhang et al. focus on the stabilization of networkeddistributed systems with partial and event-based couplings, and Z. Hu and Z. Xu give some solution on the distributeddetection over a noisy multiaccess channel.
(3) Other results on the large-scale systems, such asmicrogrids, electric vehicle hydroturbine, and neural net-works, are also discussed. Interested readers are referred tothe detailed papers reported in this issue.
We hope this special issue will be a useful referencefor people working on this area, and more fruitful resultswill be obtained in the time ahead based on the publishedworks.
