Great Result in being awarded the 5* safety award as a group at the first attempt

Environmental award gained Biffa 4* again at the first attempt

Biffa is the first waste management company to undergo the British Safety Councils stringent audit of each of its divisions.

Auditors examined documentation, records and record-keeping, observed staff behaviour and interviewed workers, and scrutinised overall health and safety organisation, management systems and controls, emergency systems, reporting of accidents, near misses and ill health, and improvement identification and implementation.

The division was commended for its documented consultation and communication with staff, regular safety inspections and checklists, internal system and activity audits, risk assessments and development of safe work systems, effective promotion of risk areas such as near misses, health and safety administration, and the involvement of staff in purchasing personal protective equipment.

Biffa Safety Campaigns

South Staffs . Implemented a hazard and near miss reporting initiative, resulting in excess of 750

reports from 46 employees in the previous financial year. Part of the success was due the introduction of a Near Miss / hazard raffle draw. This successfully raised awareness and maintained focus as well as accident prevention..

Working closely with our client South Staffordshire Council and Staffordshire Police, lead a local media campaign highlighting the dangers faced by my employees working on the public highway, article was published in the local media followed by the Daily Mail which then lead to a piece being done with Biffa on The One Show

Installed 360 degree (four way) live web based cameras to the fleet of 16 vehicles used to monitor staff who predominantly work unsupervised. The objective is to use the system to further educate the employees by sharing the footage via live streaming on a wall mounted monitor in the depot and use this to ask “could this have been done safer?”, as well as recognising safety excellence and positive behaviours.

This is also being used to fight false insurance claims and improve accident investigations.

Wirral: Cars on Pavements and violent acts of aggressionBiffa, Wirral Borough Council and the Police have worked together and as a result a local process has been developed for the reporting of such incidents and for proportionate action to be taken in relation to them.

An Employee charter was developed to ensure the full commitment of employees in reporting incidents of this nature.

This has now been shared and taken on by other Municipal depots so that incidents of this nature can be actioned and reduced

Health and Safety Monitoring

Crew ChecksSupervision is an integral part of preventing accidents from happening, to ensure this is carried out with our field based employees we carry out a system of crew monitoring. This involves random visits from supervisors who carry out a set criteria of checks with questions based on the below areas:

Transport & Vehicle Condition Pedestrian safety (operatives and members of public): Slips and Trips Manual Handling and the use of lifting equipment: Uniform/PPE/Hygiene Tools and Equipment Paperwork/Defect Checks/Near Misses/TBT’s

Depots with 360 cameras have the ability to carry checks from a tablet near by before meeting the crew.
