In 2010 Gerhard Maree organised monthly get-togethers with friends – events accompanied by

great food and music they fondly called soirées. Very quickly word began to spread and more artists joined in the events. The idea to make a public event was sparked and Gerhard decided to curate and organise more events.

With two main components, Secret Soirée events being specifi cally for music, and Drawingrooms for artists, City Soirée has Pretoria on its toes, providing locals with a variety of interesting events.

What was the inspiration behind City Soirée?I think it has always been about connecting people. It started with music mainly because I come from that world and simply understood it better. We felt that events could be done a bit better. Not so much in the curating or execution fi eld, but more to

do with mitigating the risk for everyone involved and trying to fi nd ways for artists with strong communities around them to do events and do it sustainably.

Was the choice to base the events on crowdfunding purely practical?Practical but also philosophical. Even the smallest event has some sort of risk attached to it. Crowdfunding also goes further than just the money. It also creates a sense of community and gives the fans, who have always been seen as consumers, more ownership of the project.

How do artists profit from these events?Each event is completely dependent on the target of pledges needed. That income needs to cover the necessary costs for the event, which includes a base fee for the artists as well as ourselves, and then if the venue size allows more tickets to be sold, we have a profi t share with the artists based on what everyone made from the pledges.

Any exciting projects or events we can keep our eyes peeled for? We’re setting up a few Secret Soirées with American blues legend Doc MacLean towards the end of the year. We’re looking at Pretoria, Jozi, PE and Cape Town for these, so defi nitely something to keep an eye out for.

Shaken, not stirred

E very once in a while it’s good to indulge in the mystery that is the spy world. Since the 1960s, Ian

Fleming’s James Bond series has had a major impact on popular culture. The famous quote, “Shaken, not stirred”, has conjured up many an argument between cocktail connoisseurs. Some believe that shaking a Martini results in a bubbly and bitter drink. Bond enjoys a variety of drinks in the books and the fi lms, champagne being a fi rm favourite. Two forgotten drinks seem to be the Americano and the Scotch and Soda.

The AmericanoThe Americano is well-known for being the fi rst drink James Bond orders in Casino Royale. This drink is signifi cant to the 007 adventures as it is an introduction to Bond’s refi ned drinking style.

Ingredients:• 30ml Campari• 30ml Cinzano Rosso vermouth• Club soda

Pour the Campari and vermouth in a glass of your choice fi lled with ice. Fill up the glass with club soda and garnish with an orange slice.

Scotch and SodaThis drink reigns in the book series, but never gets its deserved limelight in the fi lms. A simple drink Bond most often enjoyed with Scotch. Every now and again he substitutes the Scotch with bourbon or whiskey.

Ingredients:• 60ml Scotch whisky• Club soda

Add the Scotch to a highball glass fi lled with ice or whiskey rocks. Top up with club soda and stir briefl y.

The Vesper Martini

In the fi rst James Bond book, Casino Royale, Bond describes exactly how he would like his

Martini prepared. The Vesper Martini is named after the fi rst Bond girl, Vesper Lynd, and made with Kina Lillet.

Unfortunately Kina Lillet does not exist anymore; however, Lillet Blanc or Martini vermouth are adequate substitutes.

Ingredients:90ml Gordon’s Dry Gin

30ml vodka15ml Lillet Blanc/ Martini & Rossi Extra Dry vermouth

Add all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake the mixture well until it is ice-cold. Pour

into a Martini glass and add a large piece of lemon peel.

Loerie Land is a registered independent school with the best interest of the child at heart. Its

curriculum is based on the Caps system, but also includes subjects such as music, dance and art. Parents who work long hours will benefit from knowing that their children are cared for and educated, and that homework is completed.

Q: How did your business start?A: The school was built and started as

a creche. I bought it because of the need in the area for trustworthy

and dedicated educators. Each year since I started we have had to expand because of the huge demand for our services.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop?

A: The choice was largely an emotional one. I really liked the area and felt that I could make a difference in The Reeds where there are many families with young children. When my friend introduced me to the school, I already knew that the area was very convenient for access onto the N1 south or north depending on where the parents work.

Q: How did you find your premises?A: The school was for sale and was

shown to me by a friend. Q: Why are the premises ideally

suited to your business?A: It is very convenient for the parents

who live in The Reeds since they can drop-off-and-go on a circular driveway. I have been fortunate to be able to buy the adjoining buildings to enlarge the school as more children needed us. The main building was designed specifically for children and the purpose of a school. The building is designed in the form of a bird with the wings containing the classes and the body the office and reception areas. The playgrounds are large which is wonderful in a suburban setting.

Q: Who are your neighbours?A: Young families living in

houses or townhouses.

Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?

A: Rental prices for housing range from R6,500 to over R10,000 depending on

your needs and income. House prices range from R850,000 to R2,5m.

Q: What is your shop footprint?A: We have about 450 children in

the school. Parents often pop in for a visit since we are very family oriented. We offer aftercare to other schoolchildren in the area. We also have day visitors at times when parents need to drop off their children if the nanny is unavailable.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans?A: Yes. We have expanded rapidly

with the help of business partners. We grew from a preschool to a primary as well as high school. Our next project is a farm which will be utilised as a boarding school and technical school with a range of Seta-accredited certifications. The farm is situated on the R511 and is close enough to The Reeds to be easily accessible, but far enough to feel as if one were out in farm land. This is a very exciting project and the children are looking forward to the hands-on, independent approach that we will follow.

Q: Do you operate online as well?A: We have a Facebook page.

Q: What’s your most popular service?A: Our extended hours are very popular.

Our extensive remedial and aftercare programme and the fact that we do homework with the children under supervision, are very important.

No place for business as usual

By the end of this year, it is likely that Standard & Poor’s would have downgraded South

Africa’s sovereign debt to below investment grade status. Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his team are doing as much as they can to try to prevent this from happening, but it is unlikely that they will succeed.

This is not only because their interventions are probably too late, but because they cannot do everything that needs to be done on their own. For South Africa to avoid junk status, what we need more than anything is faster economic growth, and that requires clearer leadership and policy direction from more than just the National Treasury.

The simple truth is that South Africa’s economy is meandering because there is no real direction from our leaders. There is a reluctance to make any difficult decisions about how we move the economy along.

We cannot simply carry on as usual and hope that things will somehow sort themselves out. Things have to change, otherwise we will continue to underperform.

The chief economist at Investment Solutions, Lesiba Mothata, believes that one of those hard decisions is that raising taxes isn’t going to help. Other countries that have been in similar situations to the one South Africa is in now have had no success by increasing the tax burden on individuals and businesses. This is because higher taxes don’t stimulate an economy. If anything, they do the opposite.

Instead, Mothata believes we have to think of innovative ways of increasing our growth, and primarily that means focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). These have to be the key to South Africa’s prosperity, and unfortunately we are neglecting them.

This country has developed in such a way that large businesses control most of the economy. They also have the most influence with the government. The result is that SMEs are at a heavy disadvantage and they aren’t receiving the kind of support that would really drive their growth.

In South Africa, SMEs only employ around 40% of the workforce. In India, this figure is 67%, and the government there still thinks the sector can do better. It recently announced that any new business will be tax exempt for its first five years.

These are the kinds of policies that South Africa needs to look at to make starting and building a business an attractive idea. We have so many entrepreneurs in this country. What we need is to give them the right space in which to prosper and build the economy.

Rosebank’s Keyes Avenue transforming into pedestrian-friendly arts precinctPhase one of a project to

convert Rosebank’s Keyes Avenue area into a dedicated

art precinct has begun. This upgrade in the heart of Rosebank aims to attract visitors and tourists to a more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly space.

The area is already home to the Everard Read Gallery, the Circa Gallery and the Goodman Gallery. The project’s objective is to create attractive streets so people will be encouraged to walk or cycle through the area.

StudioMAS Architects and Urban Designers created the development plan for the area upgrade.

It addresses the state of disrepair of streets, its many blank and windowless walls, and parking garages that face the road. These create an unpleasant, even unsafe, environment for pedestrians.

“The current condition of Keyes Avenue appears to be a haphazard overlap of cars, scholars, church congregants, gallery visitors and daily commuters,” states the plan.

Its architects highlight a street in disrepair, dominated by vehicle movements to the detriment of pedestrians.

They note that despite the “degradations and state of the streets, pavement and buildings” the area is an emerging precinct with “great development potential”.

Phase one of the Keyes Avenue art precinct, involving the upgrade of the pavements, is currently under way. The second phase is imminent.

More than 30% of homeowners selling their properties through

Sotheby’s International Realty in Gauteng are doing so with the intention of relocating to the Western Cape, says company chairman Lew Geffen.

“According to our agents in Pretoria, the figure stands at around 10% to 15% of their sellers, but it’s as high as

40% in many Joburg suburbs such as Dainfern and Blair Athol,” says Geffen.

Property economist at FNB, John Loos, puts the Western Cape as the province with the strongest net inflow of repeat buyers and suggests people are moving away from Gauteng for lifestyle reasons.

But according to Geffen, those reloc ating to Cape Town in particular need to study the market and manage their expectations.

Can you run a business from a sectional title home?

very popular for young and upcoming professionals

and young families because of its central position – within easy reach of Centurion, Midrand, Joburg and OR Tambo International Airport.

“Now that there is very little land left to develop, property values are sure to rise,” says IHPC estate agent Almarie Joubert.

Anne-Marie Scholtz, owner of top local agency RealNet Elegance, says, “Prices

for high-end homes in the Silver Lakes Golf Estate to the east of Pretoria have climbed steeply in recent months in response to a growing shortage of stock. The average price of recent sales in Silver Lakes has been around R4m,” she says.

“And although it’s the premier estate in the area, we are now experiencing more robust sales in the surrounding estates like The Meadows and Six Fountains, where buyers currently have a greater choice of homes for sale and the average price is only

around R2,7m.” Joubert says she has dealt with many buyers from America and Europe – Germany and Italy in particular – and this could be attributed to the “embassy boulevard” in central Pretoria.

Anton van der Walt, owner of the Chas Everitt International franchise for Pretoria East, says there has been a steady growth in prices which have risen by 7% to 8% in the past year and made the area one of the safest investment prospects in the Tshwane metro.

Semigration patterns“The fact is that residential property in Cape Town is, on average, far more expensive, and you’re likely to get less house for your money if you’re only spending your Gauteng house sale price," he says.

"On the up side, return on investment on Cape Town property also tends to be higher, so once you’re in the market you should have a higher-yielding, safe investment.”
