Editor’s ExclusiveCLAIRE BARNARDO

I must admit that this year started o a little too gloomy for my liking – the rand is weaker, there are murmurs of a recession, and we’re experiencing a severe drought. It points one way – maybe 2016 is the year when we must all pull together as

communities. While I was listening to a radio news report this week, I was delighted to hear of the extent to which this is already happening through Operation Hydrate. The operation, started by a group of volunteers who deliver water to drought-stricken areas, is testament to what can be achieved when people work together. Driven mainly through instant messaging, they aim to deliver 1,5m litres of drinking water to a ected areas. This is proof that every little bit helps.

How will you make your mark this year?

Happiness and health (in a cup) become reality WORDS: RITA-MARI LUDIKE IMAGES: SUPPLIED

Happy Me, the brainchild of Jan and Jay Roode, is a South African-owned franchise that draws inspiration

from drink trends from all over the world. Inspired by various travels to countries such as China, Taiwan, Mexico and Ethiopia, comes a drinks menu that will excite your taste buds. Using the concept of mixology combined with molecular gastronomy to create interesting and beautiful drinks in the test kitchen in Joburg has earned Happy Me the love of various drinks enthusiasts.

In terms of branding, Happy Me has nailed it. It is bright and clean, which translates into an invigorating, healthy and happy space. With more than 100 drink combinations, it is di cult to choose your fi rst drink to start your Happy Me experience. The make-your-own bubble tea is a good place to start if you have no idea what to choose. This allows you to choose a teabase, a fl avour and a texture. The texture comprises a choice between popping pearls (spherifi ed juice) or nata de coco (which is chewy coconut water jelly). Both are delicious.

There are also drinks available without any of these kinds of extras if you’re not keen on the idea. After trying one of each cold variety, the favourites that emerged were defi nitely the tea lattes. The apple

and cinnamon iced tea latte with roasted oolong has

an exotic but clean and healthy

fl avour.

However, I would steer clear from adding the black pearl option.

The smoothies are the perfect guilt-free post-workout treat. The mango yoghurt smoothie in particular is refreshing and tasty without being too heavy or overbearing. You could also choose to add whey protein if you are famished or if you would like to replace a meal. The chocolate variety drinks are surprisingly light and come with interesting options such as cookies and cream, Iced Zoo cookies, Belgian chocolate, and mint.

What caught me by surprise, was how reasonably priced the drinks are. What also impressed me was that it wasn’t necessary to add anything extra for a drink to be tasty. All in all, I was surprised that I didn’t grow tired of the fl avour of a specifi c drink. There are so many textures within each drink that every now and again a new fl avour surprises you.

Where to goCurrently there are two Happy Me franchises in Pretoria: the fi rst is a small one in The Fun Company area. This is not ideal for a sit-down meal unless you’re waiting for your kids in the play area. I would consider this as more of a takeaway spot for a refreshing drink before or after shopping. If you would like to sit down, kick back and enjoy a few Happy Me menu selections, it would be best to hop around to Forrest Hill, as it has a large seating area in a quieter space.

Go slowWORDS: CHRIS REID IMAGE: THE COFFEE REGISTRY

The slow movement has been an infl uence in food for many years, as the proliferation

of markets around the country is testament to. By encouraging people to take their time and focus on the process behind what they do, the proponents of the movement say they’ll better appreciate the outcome.

What many do not realise, however, is that this same approach can also be seen in the way people experience their homes.

In the home we’re seeing people reject -ing the idea of decorating a space all at once, but rather starting minimally and gathering possessions over years. It’s not a fi nancial matter, but rather about mindfully surrounding yourself with things you truly love.

Living slow is also about a certain meditativeness, and creating rituals that help to ground and centre you. It’s this spirit that has seen people reject appliances like espresso machines in favour of slower but more artisanal methods like the hipster favourite – the pour over.

Locally, we’re also seeing this trend go beyond individual homes –South Africa already has its fi rst slow town. Sedgefi eld on the Garden Route has been certifi ed by the global slow town organisation Cittaslow since 2010.

While the principles of slow living may be di cult to take up wholesale, its appeal is easy to understand. And while everyone can’t live in a slow town, it is creating small moments of slowness that matter in modern life.

When capsaicin is ingested the

sensory nerves of your mouth and throat send a message to the brain which increases your heart rate and level of endorphins

South Africans aren’t afraid of getting a little hot under the collar, especially when it

comes to our cooking, and we all love a good peri-peri sauce. Here are some facts about this Portuguese staple:

• The main ingredient for a peri-peri sauce is the peri-peri chilli also known as the African bird’s eye chilli.

• When Portuguese explorers fi rst arrived on the east coast of Africa, they discovered the African bird’s eye chilli which the locals called peri-peri.

• Only the terroir of south-east Africa can produce the African bird’s eye chilli.

• The smaller the chilli the hotter it will actually be.

• A chilli’s heat comes from the amount of capsaicin it contains.

• When capsaicin is ingested, the sensory nerves of your mouth and throat send a message to the brain which increases your heart rate and level of endorphins.

• Peri-peri chillies are rich

in vitamin A and C.• One of the spiciest chillies, the peri-

peri chilli, has a rating of 170,000 on the Scoville scale – a measurement of pungency (spicy heat).

• In 1987 Fernando Duarte and his friend Robert Brozin visited a restaurant called Chickenland in Joburg. They were so inspired by the taste of the peri-peri chicken that they bought the place, and Nandos, home to South Africa’s favourite peri-peri chicken, was born.

The poor rand

W ith the rand at its current levels, it’s hard to remember that just five years ago

one dollar would cost you less than R7. Since around the middle of 2011, however, the rand has been on a one-way slide against the US currency.

Unfortunately the consensus is that this trend is likely to continue. Most analysts believe that South Africa is heading for a credit rating downgrade from at least one of the major international ratings agencies this year, and together with higher US interest rates, persistently low commodity prices, and concerns over China’s growth, there is apparently little in the rand’s favour. Some forecasters are even saying that the rand will hit R20 to the dollar before the end of the year.

Many South Africans are responding to this currency weakness and concerns about the local economy by moving more money offshore. This has become an apparently simple choice. With the rand falling, international assets are going up in local currency terms, and so all one has to do to make money, is turn it into dollars and watch.

However, it is always important for anyone investing for the long term to be careful about making decisions based on short-term market movements.

If investors are taking money offshore at R17 to the dollar, they have to be confident that, in the long term, that is at least a fair price to pay for US currency, and preferably it should be a price at which dollars are cheap. And one has to look past the short-term negative prospects for the rand to make that decision.

It’s very difficult to judge exactly where a currency is trading at “fair value”, but there is a reasonably widespread belief that right now the rand is undervalued. In other words, if you are using local currency to buy dollars now, you may be paying too much.

That doesn’t mean that the rand is definitely going to come back to a more “reasonable” level any time soon. Market sentiment is currently against emerging market currencies, and the rand is not suddenly going to regain its sparkle.

However, investors should act with caution when taking money offshore. International diversification is important, and has become even more important, but don’t be in too much of a rush to expatriate your entire life savings just because of what is happening to the currency. Markets always move in cycles, and even the poor rand will eventually have its day again.

While the general sentiment globally is one of caution and instability, the

coastal belt from Durban North and Umhlanga through to the Sibaya node and Umdloti is bucking the trend.

This is according to Carol Reynolds, area principal, Pam Golding Properties Durban Coastal, who says the property market in this growth node is buoyant, driven by huge demand from local buyers and up-country investors.

The Department of Construction Economics and Management at UCT has partnered
