country fordissertationresearch - oftenlost.

Back then, I was aNew Yorker livingin Texas, and Ididn't have muchdriving experience. To find my way to different archives, I relied on a usedGPS that would cut off in the middle of a long drive, announcing somewhere on I-10 that it was "recalculating."Similarly, when I first began revising, I knew where I wasstarting (the dissertation) and where I needed to end up(the book), but the map to help me get there kept goingblank.

Early on I assumed that most writers had a moment -walking to the store, going for a run, or driving to campus -when they finally, triumphantly figured out what their bookwas supposed to be about. So in my first phase ofrevising, I waited for an epiphany. In the second, longerphase, I turned off that metaphorical GPS, and devisedmy own plan to edit my way to an argument.

Helping Students in Distress: Tips forFaculty and TAs

As a teacher, students view you asa source ofinstruction, assistance, andsometimes personalsupport. In yourconversations with students, some will naturally share theirsuccesses and academic pressures, and a few willdisclose their own personal stories. Other students won'tintentionally share their problems with you, but you maynotice indirectly expressed signs of personal problems.Even if you are uncomfortable with this role, you become apotential resource in times of trouble.
