Career Services

The importance of Internships

By Ashley E. Brady and Kimberly A. Petrie for CarpeCareers

"But how do I know if I'mgoing to like teaching?"That was the sentimentexpressed by one of thevery first postdoctoralfellows to come throughVanderbilt University'scareer developmentoffice more than 10 years ago. He was applying forteaching-focused faculty positions because he hadenjoyed being a teaching assistant and guest lecturing forgraduate-level courses, but his lack of significantexperience in an undergraduate classroom left him feelingwoefully uncertain about his next step.

His concern is still echoed by many Ph.D. students andpostdoctoral fellows today, regardless of their careerinterests, who are in the midst of determining what they willdo when they finish their training.

I am always suspicious ofclaims that "things used tobe easier" in highereducation, or "morestraightforward" in the past.In reading C.P. Snow'snovels about academe inEngland, I've learned that intrigue has regularly hoveredover coveted faculty appointments. That said, things certainly used to be different when itcomes to writing letters of recommendation.

As a veteran faculty member, I am often asked to writesuch letters, and the most challenging ones to draft are foryoung scholars applying for tenure-track jobs. In anacademic job market that remains highly competitive -with dozens or even hundreds of qualified candidates foreach coveted position - I (as well as other seniorprofessors) am not infrequently asked to write letters formore than one candidate for the same job.
