Motorists and visitors in Swords will be well aware of the wonderful display of daffodils at the roundabouts on the main approaches to the town. Many people have remarked aboutthe addition this initiative by the County Council has made to the appearance of the town. The County Leader spoke to the Council’s Senior Parks Superintendent, Kevin Halpennyabout the comments regarding the roundabouts and he said, “This approach to mass planting of bulbs in very visible strategically important locations, is in line with keeping ourgreen open space strategy for Fingal. It’s a very sustainable approach to civic decoration. It provides for succession of colour in visually important locations, providing maximumimpact. This is the second year of this initiative and we’re very pleased with this particular approach, in terms of achieving our sustainability targets as well. We’re delighted that thepublic response has been so positive and we intend to expand this approach to other locations around the county,” he said.Pictured inset are County Council maintenance crew members Des Grant, Pat Crouchman and Tommy Madden.

Donabate Leisure CentreAre Top QualityThere was great newsfor the DonabatePortrane Communityand Leisure centrerecently when theywere awarded the level2 Q Mark by the EIQA(Excellence IrelandQuality Association).

The Q Mark is a busi-ness excellence awardthat is given to organi-sations after they passan assessment on allareas of their business. This is a highly soughtafter credential as Itsignifies that a busi-ness is run to a veryhigh standard. TheDonabate PortraneCommunity and LeisureCentre are the onlyleisure centre acrossthe entire North Countywho have achieved the

Q Mark. Speaking tothe County Leader,Jacinta Lowndes, manager of the leisurecentre said; “The QMark is a qual i tymanagement system. The EIQA come out andconduct an audit on allof our systems, poli-cies, procedures, etc.So it covers all of thecentre and the staffing, how we do our HR, andall our customer care.We were rated on all ofthose categories so itreally is hard work.”She went on to say;“We did it initially fouryears ago. F irst offthey come out and do apractice audit and tellyou where you need tobring your standardsup. So after that weworked on everythingthey pointed out to us

for about 6 months. Wehad brought our stan-dards up so much thatwe made level 1, whichwould be pretty good, but now we are up tolevel 2. There are only3 levels so it’s really anachievement. We got acertificate to say thatwe have achieved level2 and we got ourqual ity mark and weare allowed to use thelogo.” “From the staffpoint of view everyonegets to take part in anaudit so they under-stand the paperwork

that is involved and allthe processes behindit. From a busi-ness point of view thatis very valuable forthem to know. Thetraining is continual sothere is continualpersonal developmentfor all of the staff thatwork here. Outwardlyit shows people thatuse the centre that wehave a certain qualitysystem in place that weabide by and we tryeach year to improveon it “ she said. Sheconcluded by saying;“We have alreadyconducted our auditthis year and we haveachieved level twoagain and in fact ,higher again, so we arehappy with that. Local councillor, Joe Newman(NP) has put forward a motion atthe most recentBalbriggan/Swords AreaCommittee Meeting, where he iscalling for an all-weather facilityfor sports clubs in Swords andsurrounding area.

Newman is asking the Council toexplore the possibility ofproviding these facilities in anarea that will not cause anyinconvenience to residentialareas. He feels that the ideallocation would be close to theproposed Swords by-passbetween Ridgewood and DublinAirport. He told the County

Leader, “I believe there’s a realneed among local clubs for thisfacility. Locating it at Ridgewoodmay well help to solve the trafficcongestion where people usethe estate to get to pitches atpresent. The Council, as part ofthe Development Plan 2017 are

looking at a hub somewhere toallow for the provision of an all-weather facility. In my opinion, there are three possible loca-tions for this hub, namelyRidgewood, River Valley Parkand an area close toBrackenstown. This would be ofgreat benefit to clubs like RiverValley Rangers, St Finian’s GAAClub and Swords Manor FC. Itmay well be a great help totennis clubs as well,” he said.“There is certainly a real needfor a community outlet in thearea, which will provide asporting outlet for children andadults alike in the community. Iam actively pushing for this atCouncil level and I am appealingto clubs to communicate nowwith the Council to let themknow what their plans are. It’sjust about choosing the properhub,” he concluded.

C o u n c i l l o rAdrian Henchy(FF) submitted amotion in rela-tion to theGarda presence on theDonabate PortranePeninsula. In it heasked the Council; “Inlight of the recentimprovement in Gardaresources in the localarea, that our areacommittee write to boththe ChiefSuperintendent and theincoming Minster forJustice to prioritise theappointment of two fulltime Community GardaOfficers assigned to theDonabate PortranePeninsula given thecurrent population is

It has been a busy few weeks for thestudents of St Joseph’s SecondarySchool Rush. Between taking part in atwo week immersion programmewhere the school visited Uganda overthe Easter Holidays, taking part in the

Trinity College Medical Week and theschools annual Ability AwarenessWeek, the up coming bank holiday issure to be one of much deserved restfor the dedicated students. Speaking to the County Leader, teacher in the school Yvonne Kielysaid; “We try to take a more inclusiveattitude towards education here in StJoseph’s. It’s not just about maths andenglish and irish. We try to give our

students a broader spectrum of educa-tion.”She went on to say: “The TrinityMedical day was part of a programmewe run with second years where we tryto convey that every one is entitled to

an education regardless of background. So you might have a child whomaybe none of their family has gone tocollege so they might think that theycan’t. With this programme we showhow accessible education can be toeveryone so that might encourage thatchild to go to college later on.”“With the Uganda trip, that was 27 4thand 5th years and five staff memberswho went. It was an immersion project

to show the students how other peoplelive in other parts of the world. The tripwas organised in conjunction withcharity Aidlink and the students raised80,000 euro between them all for thecharity. It was really great becausethey got to experience something thatvery few people have the opportunityto experience. They visited a localprimary school in the Wakiso Districtand a Secondary school in Masaka, itwas a very valuable experience forthem. “ she said.Speaking about the Ability Awarenessweek she said; “Another aspect of ourlearning here is trying to be as inclusiveas we can. That is where the AbilityAwareness week comes in. We are theonly school to do it in this area and it isreally to show the kids that everyonedeserves to be treated equally.Regardless of whether or not they haveany disabilities or differences. We areall the same with different abilities. Thestudents learn about different thingson different days. For example; one daythey might learn all about autism thenthe next day they would learn all aboutdyspraxia. This year the week endedwith a play about the 1916 rising thatwas performed by a cast made upmostly of young people with learningdisabilities. It was lovely and it wasreally touching to watch.”“Again this is all about encouraging ourstudents to appreciate everyone andlearn about things that are not just onthe schools syllabus or in a text book,”Concluded Ms Kiely.

Beverton Preschool Win AwardBeverton Preschool inDonabate have beenleading innovators inoutdoor and alternativeteaching methods forsome time and have wonmany awards giving themcredit for the work theydo. The teachers andmanagement of Bevertonbelieve that outdoorteaching and the inclu-sion of cultural diversitywithin their teaching is ofgreat importance. Recently, the EarlyChildhood Ireland confer-ence, which was held inCroke Park showed that‘outdoor play is funda-mental’ to young chil-dren’s development.Beverton were invited tothe conference and whilethere two of their chil-dren staged a ‘prisonbreak’ for more outdoorplay along with pre-school manager NickolaCullen who managesBeverton Preschool. Thepurpose of the stagedprison break was toemphasise the fact thatmore outside play isnecessary for young chil-dren. Speaking to the CountyLeader, Nickola Cullen, manager of the pre-school said; “There is a

real resurgence at themoment of the need foroutdoor play. There’s ahuge amount of researchthat has been going onthat says that childrenare just not gettingenough outdoor play.”The pre-school haverecently been awardedtheir second green flagand are the only pre-school in the area to havebeen awarded one.Manager, Nickola said;“An Taisce had stoppedthe green schoolsprogramme for pre-schools because offunding so we were reallylucky that they took uson. This is our secondgreen flag so we’ve had itfor four years now.”Clearly no strangers toawards and accolades, four weeks ago themanagement of the pre-school heard that theyhad won an EarlyChildhood IrelandLearning Story Award. These awards have beeninitiated to showcase thewonderful work andlearning that ishappening all over thecountry in early yearssettings; “Recently wehave won a learning storyaward. This is our fourth

year now. Early childhoodIreland has an awardpresentation every yearso you can put in somepiece that is very innova-tive or a learning storyand we’ve won both ofthose categories for thelast four years. We wonthe overall category twoyears ago which was anation wide one.”“Our learning story is abeautiful piece abouthow we handle diversity. It’s about a little girl,Roisin, who is with uswhose Mother is fromIndia and how wewelcomed her wholeculture into the service. Her Mother came into usand we celebrated Divali, which is a celebration oflight,” she said. Many Pre-schools willcelebrate things likeChinese New Year or StPatrick’s day, but thelearning story aspect ofthe awards ceremony isawarded to services whocan show how they goabove and beyond to beinclusive. Nickola told us that;“Roisin made a book allabout her pre-schoolhere which she broughtto India with her andshowed everybody overin India. During the timewhen she was explainingto us about her culture, she began to tell me thatI was pronouncing thingswrong, she told me that‘you have to use yourIndian voice to say itsilly!’, so then Roisinspoke in her Indian voicefor the whole day. It’s allabout equality and diver-sity and about beingrecognised and makingsure she knows that hervoice is being recognisedas important in all thatwe do. The other side of itis that she’s teaching herpeers all about India.”This touching story aboutinclusion, diversity, iden-tity and belonging high-lights how Beverton are apre-school that goesabove and beyond toensure inclusivity for allof their children andemphasises the impor-tance of diverse andalternative learningmethods.

Everyone knows thatSpring is the time ofbright colours andsmiles. It’s a time forpositive changes. Withthe month of May justaround the corner andthe daytime hoursbecome longer, we cannow stay out and enjoymore time in the greatoutdoors and love thethoughts of cominghome to our beautifulhomes. However, peopletend to spend more timeinside their home thanout, so why not makeyour home as bright andrelaxing as possible.

Room By Room

What ever room you feelneeds your attentionfirst is the place youwant to start. Let’s sayit’s the bedroom, in thatcase there are smallimprovements that willmake your room look

like a new boudoir. Newcurtains and blinds are astart, to make thewindow a beautifulfeature in your bedroomand you can still havethat minimal look.Keeping all your clothesand belongings tidiedaway will automaticallykeep your room lookingfresh and clean. If youhave a small bedroom, minimalism is veryimportant and there arelots of tricks and ways toensure all of your essen-tials are well out of theway. Under bed storageboxes and bags are agreat way to store someof your things. Youshould also take advan-tage of your attic, if youhave one. Once all ofyour belongings aresorted and tidied, tryscattering a few cush-ions on your bed andclearing bedside lockers.Try a nice lamp on your

bedside locker that willmatch your curtains orbed clothes. This givesthe room the feeling offew colours and makes itlook bigger.

Kitchen

Now this is the placethat many of us spend alot of time in. Whetheryou cook, watch TV orjust come in every sooften to grab a snack, you still wouldn’t wantthis place to be dark, miserable and cold, especially in Spring.Paint the kitchen walls ina bright creamy colourthat wouldn’t be tooannoying, but would bepleasant to your eyes. Also, why not take thosedark blinds down andkeep the windows open,or even try some newwooden blinds thatcome in many differentcolours. This way, youcould enjoy the sunshinewhile cooking, whichwould make the processa whole lot more enjoy-able.

Living Room

During Spring, yourliving room should havea lot of space. Therefore, get those old books andmagazines out. Thecarpet may be dark anddirty after the winter, soits best to get a new onein the colour you wouldprefer. It is, however, advisable to leave it verybright and warmcoloured. This wouldcreate a strong sense ofSpring and would surelymake you feel happier. Ifthere is old furniture thattakes up lots of space, replace it with some-thing smaller andbrighter. Don’t forget, aliving room is a place forresting, keep it as openas possible.
