    The cabbage patch conjures up romantic images or kidsand adults alike. Te leaves are big, and young people andsmall rodents can easily hide within it. Tis old vegetable

    and other brassicas are reliable, store well due to the high sugarcontent and have great traditions in cuisine rom boiled cabbageand stuffed cabbage to soups and ermented products like sauer-kraut and kimchi to coleslaw and other raw salads and sandwiches(Vietnamese Banh Mi, or example). Te cabbage is a vegetablethat seems to find its way into all cultures and every season.

    A variety o cabbage that I experienced this year was the Arrow-head cabbage, which has been enjoyable to prepare, eat and to sell.It is ofen used in making a special sauerkraut called Filder Kraut.We are so used to the big round dense heads, but the Arrowhead is

    a bit less dense, and very sweet when sauted. It is cut into wedges,making a great presentation.

    Te beauty o vegetables is continuously inspiring. Te brassicaamily leads in this regard in many ways. For example, romanesco,with its ractal structure, or the cheddar cauliflower, which is ayellowish orange instead o white brighten any salad or entre.Kohlrabi looks like Sputnik (the 1957 Russian rocket) and hasgreat crunch when eaten raw or a delicate flavor when cooked.In late all afer the first rost, we will have the tall stalks withprotruding Brussels sprouts or sauting, steaming or pickling.

    A healthy choiceCabbage, and others in the amily, is high in vitamin K and C.Cabbage is highly regarded or its anti-inflammatory properties,cancer prevention and treatment, and antioxidants (red cabbageespecially). It is recommended to lightly saut or steam them toretain the most benefits when cooking.

    Making sauerkraut in a jarSince we will soon need to put away our summers bounty, hereis a very easy way to make your own sauerkraut. Tis process isadapted rom Stocking Up: How to Preserve the Foods You Grow,

    Naturally. I have used this method or years, and it works etime. Unpasteurized (resh) sauerkraut has more o the good bria or your digestive system, which boosts your immune syste

    1. Wash and sterilize quart glass jars, rubber rings and lids.2. Cut cabbage in thin slices or shred via ood processor

    press firmly into the jars.3. Continue to press until cabbage juice starts to occur, add m

    cabbage until you have about a 1 inch space lef in the jar4. Add 1 teaspoon salt.5. Add a teaspoon honey.6. Fill slowly with boiling water.7. Insert a knie to dissipate any air bubbles.8. Leaving 1 inch o space, put lids on tightly.

    9. Place jars in a tub in a cool place (65-70 degrees) outdooin your garage

    Fermenting will cause leakage, that is part o the process. Ferming will take about six weeks.

    The way o unorgiveness leads us down a path thattwists and turns, and is filled with thorns and road-blocks. Te way is not clear, or it is not seen at all.

    With orgiveness, the way becomes clear. Forgiveness does nottwist the truth into something it is not. It leads us home.

    In every situation that crosses our path, we have a choice. ooofen though, our choice is to blame our discomort on another, beit another person, an organization, the government, society, financialinstitutions or the media. We place the blame squarely on someoneelses shoulders instead o looking within, where the problem lies.

    In A Course in Miracles, we are reminded, I am never upsetor the reason I think. We think the problem is outside o us, hencethe blame game we play again and again. In reality, it is a problem

    in our own minds. Or you could say, a disturbance to our lie orce.Te concept o orgiveness, as it is discussed in A Course in

    Miracles, is as ollows:

    Forgiveness, on the other hand, is still, and quietly does nothing. Itoffends no aspect o reality, nor seeks to twist it to appearances it likes.It merely looks, and waits, and judges not. He who would not orgivemust judge, or he must justiy his ailure to orgive. But he who wouldorgive himsel must learn to welcome truth exactly as it is.

    I we come to realize that what we see outside o us is not the causeo our being upset, and instead see with loves eyes, it will result inorgiveness. When we look at the issue in ront o us, we are not

    judging it in any way. We are asked to simply look at the unrealityo the problem on the level o the divine. Te divine source doesnot see what was wronged. Here in the world, we ollow what weneed to do to report a crime, file a lawsuit, set a boundary, removesomeone rom your lie and the like. We do not pretend it has notoccurred in the effort to be spiritual, we take care o ourselvesbut we look beyond what has occurred to the love that we all are.

    Easier said than done, right?I we proess to be spiritual, it is more helpul to work through

    the issue than simply intellectualize. Te words above are poignant

    indeed, yet we are called upon to actually use the words to heree us rom our thorny path.

    When we look at the situations that call or orgiveness, wasked to step back and, without any judgment, look at whaego is doing. We notice the insanity o it. When we are hell-on the problem, then we will never see the love underneath.

    Nothing in this world can take our peace away. oo ofengive our peace away readily. We willingly give away the poo our mind and become the victim. I have heard this romCourse in Miracles students throughout my many years o te

    ing. Tey will relate a situation and consistently reer to the operson or entity as the problem. Even I too sometimes have reerred to as the problem. Te egos projection is so manin its deception that it will use anyone in ront o us, even twe love. It will whisper to us to run away rather than to acetruth in our minds. Here, we need to move rom the othethe problem, to realizing the problem is in our own mind.

    We have been araid o love in our mind. We say we dlove, yet i we allow love in we are terrified that our egowould dissolve into nothingness. Hence, we continue to insisproblem is outside instead o inside.

    Te real problem is the separation. Te real answer is oneFear or love? What will guide your lie? It is entirely up to you

    There are many health-related terms and concepts whichare becoming popularized by mass media. For the mostpart this is good, as it brings some greater awareness to

    individuals about things which may be causing them poor health.However, the popularization o these topics also may conusemany individuals; concepts like leaky gut, adrenal atigue, hypo-thyroidism and chronic atigue are some o those commonlydiscussed on health shows and online blogs. Scholarly articlesabout these items can also be ound, given the usage o the appro-priate search terms. For the health-conscious among us, the termchronic inflammation is also probably something which one has

    heard o. But what is chronic inflammation and an inflammatorystate? Does this really impact health? And i so, what can be doneto help healing?

    What is chronic inflammation?Inflammation is a necessary state associated with illness and injury,in which the body sends in immune cells to respond, break down

    products o injury, attack microbial invaders and eventually prohealing and tissue regeneration. Each o these is a very chinflammation at a low level (measureable by various inflammmediators), and there are many impacts on health long term.

    Health impacts of chronic inflammationMany diseases that are increasingly common have been shto also have a connection with chronic inflammation. Autmune disease, allergies, chronic pain, depression, diabetes, hdisease and cancer are all diseases shown to have connectwith chronic inflammation in the body.

    Decreasing inflammationTere are multiple approaches to reducing chronic inflammation.Natural approaches are ideally suited to decreasing inflammation,as it is a systemic state which many holistic treatments will collec-tively improve. Ofentimes when there is chronic inflammation, astate o intestinal permeability and poor mucosal health, inflam-mation also exists in the gut, promoting and exacerbating inflam-mation elsewhere in the body. Removing oods which promoteinflammation or irritation, healing the gut endothelial surace,improving the balance o gut microbiota and promoting healthydigestion are all part o reducing gut inflammation and perme-ability, and thereby reducing chronic inflammation.

    Various botanical and nutritional substances also have effects oreducing inflammation. urmeric, bromelain, ginger, boswellia, andberberine: each o these herbs and botanical isolates have evidenceo reducing inflammation. Other substances that balance theimmune system response and by these means and others reduceinflammation are fish oil, probiotics and vitamin D. Vitamin Dlevels in the general population are ofen low, and some studieshave shown improved health with serum vitamin D levels, whichare higher than the commonly accepted normal lower limits. Anti-oxidants, provided by intake o colorul ruits (particularly berries),

    vegetables, green tea and other antioxidant supplements such asvitamin C, vitamin E, lipoic acid and CoQ10, when consumed inappropriate amounts, can also act to reduce damage by neutralizing

    reactive oxidant species (also known as ree radicals), which causedamage and are increased with chronic inflammation.

    In conclusionOverall, despite the unknown level o inflammation that manyo us experience rom time to time in lie, eating a diet which ishealthy and avoids processed oods, is high in ruits and/or vege-tables, and is organic whenever possible will support the reduc-tion o inflammation and disease risks associated with this. Occa-sionally, individuals who have been diagnosed with these diseasesmay find it helpul to seek additional support rom an individuallike a naturopathic doctor who has been urther trained in assess-ing and addressing the causes o inflammation or other aspectso managing chronic disease. When considering health, it neverhurts to seek a second opinion as so much can be done naturallyto support health and disease prevention!

    On March 6, 1999, Shannon Kenitz gave birth to a beau-tiul baby girl named Grace. As happy as any parentwould be to welcome another addition to their amily,

    Shannons happiness began to ade as she noticed a drastic changein her child. Grace wasnt eating well and her eyes began to rollrequently. Grace was later diagnosed with a rare mitochondrialdisorder and suffered repeated seizures. Shannon visited withseveral physicians and exploited various therapies or Grace, but

    Graces condition turned lie-threatening.Subsequently, Grace was put on a eeding tube, lost her vision,

    was unable to walk and was on 42 different medications. AferShannon and her eldest daughter, Lily, lived in a hospital or threeyears monitoring Graces condition, the hospital won the rightto take Grace off lie support as Shannon had exhausted all theinsurance the state offered. As a last effort to save her daughterslie, Shannon heard about hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO)through a national parent-to-parent network called MUMS.

    Shortly afer, Shannon took Grace out o the hospital and droverom her home in Madison to Florida, where Grace would beginHBO. Miraculously, afer 17 sessions, Grace grabbed her moth-ers hand or the first time. Grace was finally showing improve-ment both physically and cognitively. As Shannon and her twodaughters ound themselves practically living in another hospital,Shannon knew she had to get back home to save her marriage.

    Upon arriving back in Wisconsin, Shannon was ast at worksaving her marriage afer saving her daughters lie. However, ourweeks into being home, Grace started sleeping 18 hours a day, andwhen examined by doctors, it was confirmed that Graces brainwas shutting down. Again, doctors were convinced that Gracewould not survive. Shannon knew she had to bring HBO to

    Wisconsin and ultimately to Grace. In only 12 weeks, Shanmanaged to gain corporate sponsors and opened her own hybaric clinic in Madison; Grace defied the odds, yet again,regained neurological unction. oday Grace is 15 years oldlives a great lie with her amily.

    Tis is important because the body you have right now is thebody you have earned with your daily movement habits over the

    Enter joint mobility practice. Tese drills are designed to helpyou consciously move a joint through its ull range o motion. Teresults rom something as simple as making a circle with your wristor ankle can be astounding. ry moving these joints in as many waysas you can. Begin with sideways and up/down motions, then moveon to circular motions. Always avoid any spots that are painul. Youmight have to use your hands as a guide at first.

    Big payoff joints Ankle.Five small joints make up the ankle. Each individual

    joint must be able to move reely or you to be able to walkwith a proper gait and exercise efficiently.

    Mid-back. Your thoracic spine is meant to be a very mobilepart o your back. Te vertebrae o your thoracic spine shouldbe able to move orward and back, lef and right and in circleswithout moving your low back, your neck or your shoulders.Tis is essential or optimal back health throughout lie.

    Neck. Te range o motion that your neck is supposed to be

    able to move through is quite remarkable. Any limitationto injury or misuse/neglect that limits neck mobility will a great impact on your low back, pelvis and hips. Te cervcal spine (neck) needs to be able to move in lateral glidinmotions, tilting motions rom side to side, sliding unkychicken type motions and circular motions as well as rottions to the lef and right.

    Istumbled across the practice o sympa-thetic joy a number o years ago in myquest to quell my envious soul it

    was either that or break open my sternumand yank out my heart. Learning to prac-tice sympathetic joy seemed a less vicious,bloody way to handle things.

    Tis special type o joy, rooted inBuddhist philosophy, is considered aninnate ability o humans, one in whichwe contain the boundless capacity tosavor lies blessings, regardless o whethertheyre showered on us or on other people.Tis altruistic joy, at its essence, is the plea-

    sure that comes when we delight in otherpeoples well-being rather than begrudgeor envy it.

    I craved this orm o pleasure. I wantedto be able to be genuinely happy or others,to eel expansive, instead o shriveled bythe raging death grip envy seemed to have

    on my heart. It was easy to understand whythis green-eyed monster had overtaken mysoul: I was single as the result o a requestor a divorce; our in vitro ertilization babyhad slipped away in a miscarriage; andmy lie did not resemble my dreams. I eltout o my league and deeated in the pres-ence o riends with happy marriages andmamas with at, contented babies.

    Four things needed to happen, I discov-ered, to be able to practice sympathetic joy:

    1. BE OKAY WITH THE ENVY LAVA

    BUBBLING UP. So ofen we scoldourselves or what we are eeling and

    make ourselves eel wrong or whatweve been taught is a bad emotion.While envy and jealousy runningamok can lead us to do some reallymean and awkward things to others,the emotions in and o themselvesare a part o being human. I learned I

    Hypnosis reers to a state o mind or a condition wheresomeone is in a heightened yet relaxed state o aware-ness, and is receptive or responsive to suggestions or

    induction. Induced trance states and trance dance dates back toEgyptian and Greco-Roman times. Down through the centuries,many contributed to this lucid sleep state.

    It wasnt until the 19th century that this mental process becamea psycho-dynamic tool. Franz Mesmer utilized what he reerredto as animal magnetism, a practice that later became known asmesmerism, involving ormalized induction to trance states or adefined purpose. British doctor James Braid used eye fixation on

    objects like a watch or candlelight and coined the word hypnosisrom the Greek hypnos,meaning sleep.

    It is thought that Dr. Sigmund Freud first used the term hypno-therapy in the mid-19th century in his research and explorationo hypnotism, prior to his ounding o psychoanalysis. Freudound hypnosis to be a most proound therapeutic tool. Freudspsychoanalysis in act is a subtle kind o guided sel-hypnosis

    leading the patient out o the sel-induced negating egoist dazones. As psychoanalysis took off, hypnosis took a back seat.

    Do a brie relationship analysis. ake amoment to think about your relationships:

    amily, coworkers, classmates, neighborsand brie encounters with people you dontknow well or at all. Are they all happy andharmonious? What are the characteristicso the people with whom you most liketo spend time with or enjoy meeting? Arethey angry or happy? Miserly or generous?Jealous or supportive? You get the idea.

    What characteristics do you bring toyour relationships? Do you put the otherpersons happiness beore your own? Are

    you patient or impatient? Compassioor indifferent? As Dr. Phil says, Howsworkin or ya?

    Finding inner peace and happinepossible when we have reed our mrom delusions (negativity) such as adesirous attachment, jealousy, hatred,ishness and so orth. We can easily seewhen our mind is clouded by negatour relationships with others are trouas well. On the other hand, whenheart is filled with positive qualities

    generosity, patience, equanimity and or others, relationships tend to be wand positive, too. Buddhas advice caneach o us become that person with weveryone enjoys spending time.

    Danni realizes that she eels unhappyaround Cindy. But why? Cindy did nothingto her. She has no special power to make

    Danni unhappy. What Danni is eeling isarising rom within her own mind. Whatis that unpleasant eeling? Jealousy? Yes,Danni thinks, I eel jealous toward Cindyand I made a mean remark to try to makeher eel bad. She might also think oother situations (relationships) in which

    jealously has prompted her to say or dosomething harmul to the other person.Danni does not think o hersel as a meanperson or as someone who enjoys hurtingothers, but when she thinks about this,there it is. She thinks, I said those thingsand I am really, really sorry that my wordshurt anyone. Does she need to apologizeto Cindy? Perhaps. Or she could make apoint o paying her a sincere complimentthe next time they meet. Tis is not neces-sarily an easy thing to do, but with medita-tion and practice, it gets easier over time.Simply creating the wish to do it is a start.

    Upon reflecting on all o this, Danni isdetermined to change so that she doesntact on jealous eelings again. She can medi-tate on this determination to recognize

    jealousy as it is arising and not let it havethe upper hand. She can promise herselto practice this awareness or just one dayor even just part o one day. By repeatingthis practice again and again, her ability tosquash jealousy will steadily improve.

    Would it surprise you to learn thatCindy and Danni later became bestriends? When we put Buddhas advice intopractice, we notice that all o our relation-ships improve, and that every day becomesa great day!

    Have you contemplated adding juicing to your diet? Once youhave a base o eating primarily a whole oods diet, limitingprocessed oods on a routine basis, juicing may be a great

    addition. Juicing separates the liquid rom the pulp (fiber) o ruits andvegetables. Tis allows the body to use the vitamins and minerals inthe produce at a aster rate because its in its most absorbable orm, andextra energy isnt needed to break down the fiber. Juicing allows you toconsume a larger amount o nutrients rom the produce because youwill not be filling up with the fiber. Knowing you will not be gettingfiber rom the juice, its important to be conscientious and add fiber inthroughout the day by eating a variety o ruits, vegetables and wholegrains, such as oatmeal, quinoa and wild rice.

    Three main types of juicersThe centrifugal juicer is the most common type o juicer sold andusually the least expensive. Tis is the astest juicer compared withthe other two juicers mentioned in this article, but a higher amount ooxidation occurs with this type as well. Due to the oxidation, it is bestto drink the juice as soon as its made because as it sits, it will lose itsnutrient value at a aster rate. It is a fine juicer, but i you are planningon juicing greens (kale, spinach, etc.) you may be disappointed. Tecost is appealing, with most juicers ranging rom $100-$150.

    The masticating juicer operates a bit slower than the centri-ugal juicer, but the juice has a higher quality. It is better or juicinggreens and the juice will maintain the nutrients better than acentriugal juicer. Te biggest downside o this type o juicer is thecost, ranging on average rom $200-$400.

    A triturating (twin gear) juicer operates at an even slowerpace than the masticating juicer. You will get a bit more fiber,enzymes, vitamins and trace minerals, resulting in a higher quality

    juice than i youd use one o the other two juicers mentioned. Withthe higher quality comes a higher price tag, costing anywhererom $400 to over $1,000.

    I finances are an issue, you may want to consider purchasing ahigh quality blender versus a juicer, such as the Ninja blender,

    which costs $150-$200. With a blender you will get the fiber the liquid so there is less waste. It takes a higher amount o proto produce one glass o juice than it does to make one smooth

    When I tell people Im a groomer, the response I mostofen hear is, Oh, it must be un to play with dogs andcats all day! It is un, but it requires more than just

    a love o animals. Anyone whos attempted to groom their ownpet at home knows that. In act, it only takes a couple o attemptsat home beore most people begin to search or a proessionalgroomer. What is the first question people usually ask aboutduring this search? Price. Tis seems particularly odd to me whenthere are more important things to consider.

    One thing most people dont know or consider when lookingor a groomer is that pet groomers arent licensed or regulated. Youcould put down this magazine right now, make up a Pet Groomersign and hang it outside your ront door viola youre a pet

    groomer! Kind o scary, isnt it? So here are two little-known butequally important things to consider in your quest or a groomer.

    1. Where did they learn their grooming skills? 2. Have theyinvested their time and their money into attending a groomingschool? A hands-on pet grooming course at a grooming schoolwill generally span 16 weeks and cost several thousand dollars.Grooming schools will teach a potential pet groomer more than

    just how to cut your dog or cats hair. Most schools cover thebasics in anatomy, health care and behavioral issues, as well asthe correct use o tools and hair care products or pets.     As we continue to sel-nurtureourselves and build our housethis month, I am going to touch on

    eelings. It is such a small word but it cancome with such big results.

    Feelings have a language all o their own.Tis language is your intuitive sel and whenyou eel uncomortable eelings, they aremessages that you are out o harmony withyoursel. For most o us, it is like a oreignlanguage and something we need to and can

    learn though coaching. Most o us are discon-nected rom our eelings. A womans eelingsare typically more intense than a mans eel-ings. But we learn to suppress eelings whetherby what we were taught growing up or what isexpected in a workplace or organization.

    Our eelings are neither right nor wrong,they are just that eelings. When we eel,we process through our thinking mind,and that way o processing helps us tosuppress those eelings. What we need to

    do is to learn to really, really eel those ings. I know right about now youre thing, I eel my eelings all the time. angry, happy, sad, etc. Well, angry, hasad, etc. are thoughts, not eelings. Wyou get angry, where in your body doeel angry? Focus and ask yoursel thetime you get angry, what are you eeFor example, when I am sensitive andhurt rom anothers actions or words, my throat area getting tighter. When

    angry, I eel it in my stomach. Once I amaware o my eelings, then I can validatethose eelings and get the healing bene-fits rom them instead o blocking thoseemotions and suppressing them.

    When suppressing eelings, they comeback at you in ways o illness, conusion,guilt, anxiety, depression, blame, etc. Whatyou cant eel, you cant heal! Remember,you cant think your eelings, you can onlyeel your eelings. When you think youreelings, you are repressing them.

    ake some Post-its and write, How amI eeling? Post them around your houseor work cubicle, car, wherever you will seethem daily. Tese reminders will help youto keep conscious o eeling your eelings.When you see the How am I eeling?note, ask yoursel, How am I eeling? and

    i you think you are eeling happy, where inyour body do you eel it? Does your bodyeel energetic, tingly and positive? Or iyou are thinking that you eel sad, wherein your body do you eel it? Do you eelpain? A tightness in your throat, stomachor heart? Learn to really eel and then youcan start to process those eelings.

    How do we process our eelings? When

    we really eel, we need to do somethingwith any negative energy that is comingrom that eeling. For example, i I amblaming someone or something, I ammost likely eeling angry and have a stom-achache or my throat eels tight. Afer I

    validate that yes, I have every right to eelangry, I may need to set up some boundaryprotections and move on, but I also needto move that negative energy. We use anexercise called WAIF, where we continue tomove that negative energy out until we eelwell again. Ten, we are ready to move on.

    Tere is a story about a teacher who wastrying to teach her student a lesson abouteeling. It was the middle o winter andthe student was sent outside in the rigidcold to experience a healing process. Testudent had on a light -shirt and wastold to resist the cold by using her mind.Te student was saying things like, Tisis stupid, I dont want to be out here, Ihate this, I dont understand what stand-ing in the cold, reezing, has to do with me

    eeling my healing eelings, Im goinget sick, etc. Te teacher then askedstudent to stop resisting and just eecold. Te student started to rub her aran in place, jumped up and downallowed hersel to eel the cold. Oncedid, she told hersel that since she dhave to resist being cold anymore, shegoing to go inside and put on her coat

    As soon as the student started to resisting (what resists persists) ecold, she then took the action she neto do to eel better. Te same is trueyou. As soon as you allow yoursel toyour healthy eelings, you will then action and eel better quickly.
