    Welcome, April!Our outside environment is abuzz with positive energy, and theworld is alive again! Gardeners, walkers, bikers and what I callputzers are emerging in abundance. Its an exciting time o year!

    Getting more active outside means spending more time innature. Recently I read an interesting article about ecotherapyand its regenerative powers: stress, anxiety and depression reduc-tion, and overall mood improvement. More and more healthcare providers are giving their patients nature prescriptionsor treatment o various medical conditions as well. Research isshowing that spending time in a natural setting has benefts ormind, body and spirit.

    On April 22 we pay homage to our precious Mother Earth.Tere are many ways to celebrate Earth Day and make a dierence:treat your yard to some compost (best o all, that which you madeyoursel!), reduce, reuse and recycle, pick up litter, shop local orride your bike or an errand. Small acts by each o us can really addup to make a big dierence!

    ven aer seven years o doing thera-peutic massage, I am still surprised,even startled, when someone asks

When this happens,the muscles in the back o the neck have towork extra hard to keep your head straight.Tis is the most common cause o tensionheadache pain.     For those that suer rom requent head-aches, there is hope or you, too. An impor-tant act to keep in mind is that pain is asymptom. Te problem can be knottedmuscles or injuries. o take ibuproen torelieve pain is merely masking the symptom.It rarely does anything to help the problem.Tat is why the pain comes back so soon.     Heres an example: One woman fnally ed up with getting headaches esingle day or more than a year. She cin and got a weekly 30-minute masor around three months. She had a knot on her that was so large that it was causing sin her neck muscle.     This is a somewhat touchy subjector me to cover, but since Im askedabout it so oen, I eel it is impera-

    tive to enlighten you on it.Weve all heard o the 80/20 rule. Tis rule

    can be applied to many things in lie, romeconomics, business and marketing, to healthcare and even relationships. But what does itactually mean when applied to weight loss?

    As youve probably noticed, even thoughI am a master trainer and a nutrition expert,I dont really talk about exercise nearly asoen as I do nutrition. Obviously, exerciseand general physical activity are importantand have many health benefts, like acilitat-ing weight loss. Te reason I dont talk aboutthis much is because I am nearly 100 percentcertain that exercise and/or some orm odaily physical activity will naturally become

    part o your overall maintenance plan. Tatshow confdent I am in your willingness tofnd your way to becoming more physicallyactive. I dont even have to stress it.

    With that being said, the 80/20 rulecertainly does apply here. Eighty percent oyour weight-loss success will come directlythrough your nutritional choices and 20percent will be aided by your activity level.Yes, that is correct; the biggest impact onachieving your weight loss goal will undoubt-edly come rom your nutritional choices.In act, aer more than 20 years o helpingpeople achieve their weight-loss goals, Irarely have to try to convince someone toincorporate an exercise plan into the equa-tion. Once I get a person on the right tracknutritionally and they start to see the weightcome o, nearly 100 percent o the time theynaturally migrate to some type o exerciseplan and become more physically active. Itstruly amazing to witness this process and see

    a person adopt a whole new liestyle all romchanging what they put into their body.

    A closer look at physicalactivity and exercisePhysical activity is dierent rom exercise.Physical activity is defned as being activethroughout the day by not leading a seden-tary liestyle, whereas exercise is a plannedactivity such as running, cycling, aerobicsand strength training. Physical activity willbecome eortless once youve actually seenand elt change take place.

    On the other hand, when looking at incor-porating some sort o exercise program intoyour newly ound liestyle, please take it slow,especially i youve been inactive or sometime or have never exercised beore. Donttake the all-or-nothing approach. Incorporate

    a sound plan and adapt it to your personliestyle, schedule and disposition. Tisyou will incorporate it into your liestylemake it a permanent aspect o your lie.

    So there you have it. With the balance o good nutrition and physical aity, weight-loss success can be yours!

    Unortunately, because our pets cannot verbally commu-nicate, they oen suer to the extreme beore someonenotices they have a problem. One o the most commonly

    overlooked aictions is otitis, inammation o the ear.While you might start whining to a riend when you have an

    earache, your pet may simply not want to socialize. A cat mighthiss at others in the home and a dog might snap when childrencome near, as they are not able to explain what is wrong. Your petmight rub his head into your lap or onto the urniture or carpet. Acat might use her ront paw to rub her ear, while a dog might usehis back paw to scratch his ear. Some dogs shake an ear so hardthat an ear hematoma (broken blood vessel) develops.

    Many causesNot all ear issues are the same. Incorrect treatment can defnitelycause harm. Repetitive, irritating management can lead to theneed or surgical intervention. Most pets do nothave ear mites!

    Can you imagine how it eels to have a sore, red, inamed earand then have someone put drops o pesticide on it? Yet, this isa common practice by well-meaning pet guardians who go to thelocal pet shop to purchase an ear treatment. Sadly, many dogs havediscolored rear paws due to months o scratching ears chronicallyinected with a yeast overgrowth. Ear inammation can be due toallergy, mites, bacterial or fungal/yeast infection or a combination!

    ProperdiagnosisA veterinarian willuse an otoscope to visual-ize the external ear canal and thetympanum (ear drum). I thecanal is too swollen or cloggedwith debris or discharge to seethe ear drum, it could be assumed that the ear drum is damagedall medications are sae to use i the tympanum has been ruptuEar mites can oen be visualized with the otoscope. Tese are mcommon in kittens. Dogs most commonly have yeast inections

    Many natural ear drops exist on themarket. Chinese ear drops, garlic/mullein,sweet oil or olive oil may provide tempo-rary relie, but rarely accomplish a satisac-tory cure. Essential oil preparations showpromise with their potent antimicrobial and anti-inammatory prop-

    erties, but they cannot be saely used inside the ear canal. Te vibra-tional requency o an essential oil against the vibrating tympanumcould cause signifcant discomort. Increasing the saety o essentialoils by diluting them with a carrier oil seems to diminish their potency.

    Conventional, multi-purpose ear medications seem to be the mostreliable. Tey all have an antiungal to kill yeast, an antibiotic tokill bacteria and an anti-inammatory to provide immediate relierom the pain and itching. Most pets groan in ecstasy the momentthis is applied deep into the canal!

    Management and preventionDespite the eectiveness o this ointment, why do so many petsdevelop chronic otitis? Proper application is vital. Te medicationtip must be placed deep into the ear canal. Guardians need not eardamage to the ear drum, as this is impossible due to the L-shapedear canal o the dog and cat. Many pet guardians discontinuetreatment too soon. Partially treated inections come back with a

    vengeance. Bacteria and yeast can develop resistance. Returning

    to the vet or a re-check to visualize a canal with healthy tympanum is important. Debris le in the canal plug up against the ear drum can sera source or recurrent inection.

    Question: I I get sick, will loading up onvitamin C help me get better sooner?Answer: Many people will start toworry about how much vitamin C theyare consuming when they eel an illnesscoming on. For the most part, studies haveshown little or no beneft. Consuming extra

    vitamin C aer youre already showing signsand symptoms o an illness will not helpyou recover aster. However, or those thatconsume the proper amount o vitamin Cregularly, this may help reduce the durationo a cold by about a day, and they may haveewer symptoms than a person not meetingtheir daily requirement. Unortunately,relatively high doses o 1-2 grams may beneeded to elicit these very mild benefts,so is it really worth it in the end? Keep in

    mind, the RDA or women is 75 milligramsper day and 90 milligrams per day or men.Vitamin C can be ound in acidic oods suchas oranges, strawberries and kiwis, and alsoin green, leay vegetables. Its also ound incitrus juices or those ortifed with VitaminC. Bottom line only you can decide i youwant to dose up on vitamin C. It certainlywont cause any problems, but the minimalbenefts may not justiy the added expense.

    Question:I have taken some time o romthe gym and gained some extra weight, notto mention the act that I eel a bit weaker.Did all my muscle just turn to at?Answer: Tis is a great question, and alltoo oen it may seem like this is actuallyhappening when people stop working out.However, muscle and at are two completelydierent types o body tissue. Neither cansimply turn into the other. When peoplestop working out or long periods, ood

    intake should decrease because i youre notexpending as many calories; you certainlydont need to consume as many calories. Itsimportant to remember that the musclesin your body are active tissues that areconstantly using energy even when youresedentary. Tis means the more muscle youhave, the more calories you need. Te oppo-site is true as well. Unortunately, whenworkouts decline, people oen consume thesame amounts o ood that they had beenwhen they were working out. Tese extracalories are stored in your body as adiposetissue (body at). I you make a consciouseort to consume ewer calories when youstop working out, then you should be ableto avoid the added pounds.

    Question: Foods seem to be so in salt these days, and Im aware odangers o hypertension, heart diseasestroke. Can you please clariy the amo sodium I should be consuming dailAnswer: Youre right salt is evwhere.     aste not, want not. Tat was always the mantra I heardwhen I was growing up. For the most part, Ive lived by it except when its come to my gym memberships. Whether

    two-year contracts or month-to-month, I was getting charged eachmonth on my credit card or a service I wasnt using. Something alwaysgot in the way, and it was usuallyme! I had to fnd a way to get out omy own way, so I decided to explore using a personal trainer.

    I was looking or the complete package: Someone who would holdme accountable, tell me the truth (even when I didnt want to hear it)and make getting in shape un. And I ound that Brian Bankenbusch,owner o Epic Fitness, was the personal trainer I needed.

    My frst meeting with Brian was something that I had neverexperienced beore. He started by asking many questions aboutmy ftness goals and any concerns I had, such as bad knees; Brianwas on a act fnding mission! Aer we talked, it was time or thedreaded scale and measurements. Brian assured me that the scaledoesnt tell all, and by measuring and using calipers, he coulddetermine where I really stood. I learned that the use o calipersis the most eective way to determine body at and that depend-ing on the BMI alone is not always reliable. Brian explained that abodybuilder could weigh 275 pounds (with very little at on him)and be considered overweight and out o shape with the BMI. My

    results showed that my body at content was higher than it shouldhave been, and now I had true numbers.

    Aer the initial interview and measuring, it was time or thephysical testing. Brian explained that these were gauges he usedto determine ftness levels, and his goal was to help his clientsimprove. He had me on the oor doing push-ups, planks, balanc-ing, stepping up and down, and this was only to see where my

    ftness level was at. What was I getting mysel into? Brian assme that he would put together a program that was eectiveecient, and that my only job was to ollow what he told me to

    I have to admit, I was anxious at my frst session, but Brianme at ease. I loved that it was just Brian and mysel at the gnobody was judging me. We started out with squats. How could that be? Well, when done correctly, with a weight in hand, they can be tough! Brian was there all the way reminme about using the correct orm this was where I learned aeciency. In the past, I was going through the motions, withaving results. Now, in a ew short minutes, I was out o brbecause I was using more muscles than I had in the past.

    Te program that Brian put together or me was challengingun! I tried kettlebells or the frst time, as well as ropes. At frstropes elt like I was twirling or double-dutch jump roping, much more dicult.     Using a personal trainer is an investment in your health. Haa scheduled time with Brian orced me to be there; no more wa

    gym memberships. His training is all inclusive. It includes a membership and one-on-one training, as well as nutritional gance. While it seemed expensive at frst, in the long run it wabest value or me. I cant put a price on my health.
