Do you feel passionate about something?

Whether its your kids, your relationship, your career or a hobby on which you like to spend all your spare time, feeling passionate about something is a strong motivator for realizing success. The man featured on our cover, Troy Reissmann, is passionate about healthy lawn care. The Valley Organics owners mission is to save the planet, one lawn at a time. It sounds like a lofty goal, but he believes its possible. With equal parts perseverance and perspiration, along with a lot of help from his wife and three children, Reissmann truly believes that someday everyone will realize that customized, organic lawn treatments are a better alternative to traditional chemical-based services. Im passionate about a few things right now, not the least of which is spring and warmer weather. Weve endured a lot this winter and a change is welcome. Im also pretty passionate about trying to live healthier. For the past couple months, Ive been trying to eat more consciously. That is, pay more attention to the nutritional value of the food I eat, and watch my portion sizes. That ties in with my other health goal, which is running a half marathon in May. I have found that having an event on the calendar (and a paid registration) are two big motivators in helping me to keep my eyes on the prize, as it were. But do I expect an actual prize for running 13.1 miles? No. My goal is to simply finish and enjoy the experience with friends who will also be running. If I accomplish that, Ill be happy.

With that, Id like to encourage you to find your passion. Then cultivate it, nurture it and watch it grow. Youll be amazed by all that you can accomplish. Peace,

Jen

High-pressure sales tactics no way to get a healthy lawnBy Troy Reissmann id you ever see the movie, The Boiler Room? Its a great movie about sales. It shows the everyday life of a high pressure cold call salesman and the stresses he goes through on the job. It reminds me a lot of my days at the big chemical lawn care company I once worked for. Every day, from 11 in the morning to 9 oclock at night, I would sit and call, and call and call! I cannot tell you how much I hated that job. You see, for the most

part, the people I was calling were current customers of that company, or those who used to have the service and had sense

enough to fire them. I would start the day calling the quitters and offering them a deal to come back. If they came back, great,

Id get a commission. If not, they would go to another call program to be pestered in about a month. If the customer said yes, but to a smaller program, they would be called continuously after each round to upgrade their program. They would also get called for spring aerations, fall aerations with over-seeding, fall aerations without over-seeding, winterizing, tree and shrub programs, grub programs and finally insect control programs. If you do the math on that, it can be as many as 13 separate calls to upgrade and thats if you pick up the phone. Once your number is in their system, it continually loops until you pick up the phone. I remember calling the same person 20 times a day, six days a week! After a sale or up sell was made, the call would go over to an auditor and he or she would call you back to confirm the order! The sales manager was no dummy. If the customer refused to pick up, he would ask you to call them on your personal cell phone to trick them into answering. Needless to say, it was awful. I couldnt wait until the door-to-door sales started,

just to get away from that stale office. Im not a big fan of pestering customers, or any people for that matter. I know how you feel about cold calls, I feel the same way. The funny thing is, if you sign up for the Do Not Call Registry, they can still bother you. You have to tell them to take you off their list before they legally have to comply. Now, lets say you fired them, and then got on the Do Not Call Registry. You would think youre safe, right? Wrong! Last year they started sending salesmen door to door, specifically to those customers they can no longer reach legally by phone! It seems like that would be illegal, but its not. Trust me, I checked it out with the Department of Consumer Affairs. Its great to have a nice looking lawn, but at what cost? The chemicals and pesticides they use are dangerous, and something Ive talked about at length. The high pressure sales gimmicks they use are horrible. You deserve better. You can get that healthy, green lawn, without dangerous chemicals. Youve just got to give me a call because Im not going to call you. At least not like they do. Together we can save the

planetone lawn at a time.Troy and Lisa Reissmann own Valley Organics. For more information, or to receive a free quote on organic lawn care, call 920.268.8235. Valley Organics is located at 5091 Pumpkin Court, Larsen.

The problem of hidden sugar in pet food

S

By Cheryl Larson ugar is NOT an essential nutrient for pets. Too much of it can lead to serious health problems such as obesity, tooth decay and diabetes. Obese and older animals are more likely to develop diabetes, and all breeds are susceptible. Sugar and high-carbohydrate diets are also linked to hyperactivity, kidney, urinary and pancreatic problems, cataracts, arthritis, allergies and Candida yeast (including yeast ear infections). Why would sugar be added to the diet of

carnivores? Carnivores get all the sugar they need from the small amount of vegetables in their natural diet. Sugar is added because it is addictive! Your pet craves meat and vegetables, but can become addicted to the

sugar in poor-quality diets and treats. Your pet gobbles up the sugar quickly causing you to buy more. The addiction can make it very difficult to switch your pet over to a highquality diet as your pet may hold out for the sugar fix. Fortunately, that is a temporary problem. Once your pet is hungry and tries the new food, they will love the taste of real food again. Pet food companies have been sneaking increasing amounts of sugar into food in recent years. Poor quality rules the marketplace. Take a close look at the ingredient lists in your grocery store or large chain pet store. Species appropriate human-grade ingredients account for less than 10 percent of commercial pet diets. Treats sold by pet food giants are even less nutritious. The troubling reality is that pet food marketed for the masses is produced for profit. By creating an addiction, the giants know that you will buy that brand over and over again. The following is a list of ingredients to avoid when purchasing your pets food: Cane molasses A by-product of the manufacture of sucrose from sugar cane. Added to make pet food morewww.naturespathwayswi.com

Corn syrup Prepared from cornstarch, used in numerous food products as a sweetener. Unnecessary in pet foods. Fructose A very sweet sugar. Used as a preservative. Sorbitol Used as a flavoring agent, sugar substitute and a moisturizer in cosmetics. Sugar May include sucrose, cane sugar, caramel, corn syrup and others. Sugar is also naturally present in starches and grains. These carbohydrates differ significantly in levels of natural sugar. Dry pet food contains either grain or starch, not

because of the nutritional level, but because it makes the kibble stick together. Grainfree diets offer an array of options for this purpose. Remember, you are looking for carnivore-appropriate, low-natural sugar and carbohydrate and gluten-free food.Source: http://nutritiondata, www.natureslogic. com, http://healthypets.mercola.com Cheryl Larson is a holistic pet consultant at Down To Earth Nutrition and Massage, 2331 Velp Ave., Suite M, Green Bay. Is your child eating enough?

W

ith childhood obesity epidemics on the rise, many parents and healthcare providers are concerned about the dietary habits of children. However, many parents to toddlers or even school-aged children may wonder if their children are eating enough. Children often go through periods of finicky eating or disinterest in food. It is not uncommon to have a child who eats a wide variety of foods when he is younger only to dislike the same foods a year or two later. Most doctors say that if a child is growing and active, chances are that he is healthy and getting enough food. If the opposite is true, there may be some cause for concern. Parents should consult the childs pediatrician if eating habits seem to be compromising their childs growth or energy levels. There are estimates that a young child should eat about a tablespoon of food for each year of the childs age. Therefore, a 3-yearold should be getting at least 3 tablespoons of food. If the child is

interested in more food, certainly offer it. If he pushes food away after eating, dont force more on him. Most children should have 3 meals and 2 snacks per day. Toddlers may not eat enough in one meal to remain full until the next meal. Small, healthy snacks of vegetables, whole-grain crackers or low-fat dairy products can help take the edge off of hunger. Health experts say that it can take several introductions to a new

...it can take several introductions to a new food before the child becomes accustomed to its taste and texture... offer a variety of new foods together with something he already enjoys eating.food before the child becomes accustomed to its taste and texture. It may be a good idea to offer a variety of new foods together with something he already enjoys eating. Its also common for kids to only eat one type of food over and over again. Dont worry that the child is not getting enough nutrition. Chances are he will grow out of this stage and soon enjoy a variety of foods. Threats or punishments to eat will only serve to cause a poor relationship with food, advise childhood experts. Also, dont bribe a child to eat with the reward of a snack or dessert later on. This sets a poor example of eating and could lead to behavioral problems. Many children develop finicky eating habits. However, as long as a youngster is growing regularly and has plenty of energy for daily activities, theres a good chance that the foods being eaten are not interfering with health.SOURCE: Metro Creative Connection

Need healing? Ask the angelsBy Nancy Freier Ive been writing this column for a few years now and I have not talked much about intuition or the subject of talking with angels, although this is central to my work as an intuitive. I awakened to this phenomena in 1986 following the sudden death of my fianc. I was in a tailspin and in the grip of grief, as you might imagine, but also during this very dark time there was a very bright light peeking through. Walking to my car after receiving the news of his death that night, I heard a voice an inner voice that said, This is not the end, its just the beginning. The words were very comforting, but I didnt know they were from an angel who later told me they had to bend near the Earth to save me, because I was so sad. Back to the tailspin. Up to that point in my life I had never thought much about angels. I was raised in a strict religion that believed in a vengeful God. My life had spun so out of control, I had little faith there was a God, or angels, that could be loving and on my side. So, whose voice was it inside my head calming me, compelling me? The night my friend died I pleaded to get through the ordeal alive, and if I did, I promised I would help others heal and move through grief. My life changed in that instant. I read every book I could find on death, dying and life after death. I began attending A Course In Miracles discussion group because I needed a miracle. I was driven to learn how to talk with the angels through a technique called automatic handwriting. After some diligent practice, I perfected it and later taught hundreds of people how to talk with their angels. Listening to this inner voice of guidance was like having a roadmap to life, so this month Im featuring a couple of questions I asked the angels, along with their answers. I was curious what role the angels play in our wellness regimen, and they replied, We say to you that healing, being of a higher vibration than that of disease, and that we emanate from a higher level of being, we naturally instill healing into whatever wewww.naturespathwayswi.com

Nancy Freier,

touch or direct our energy toward. This higher vibration, and the speed at which it radiates into the world of form must heal by the virtue of it being higher in vibration. Our light/love/energy will always raise a lower vibration to a higher level. This is what you call healing. Light is a higher vibration than dark, so when you flip the light on in a dark room, the light floods the room and the darkness disappears. We say that illness is like darkness. The act of extending healing from one being to another through your thoughts, prayers, and hands-on healing/energy techniques, is an act of love, of sharing light, and giving healing. We are this higher vibration that is intricately interwoven with

loving, healing intention that fires-up dark places. We are love-in-action. We are called healers because that is the result of our intention and touch. I asked, Where are the angels when a person does not get well? and they said, We say to you, do not judge what occurs in the physical, for you cannot see the entire panorama from the tiny portal from which you look. Sometimes a person may not heal because his life on Earth is concluded, his mission accomplished, as it were. We say to you, always remember there are no accidents and nothing happens outside of Divine Order. The Earth plane is like a schoolhouse set up by your Higher Self for you to open your heart to experience a wide array of feelings and emotions. And, you are not without personal power

The word angel comes from the Greek word angelos which means messenger. i use the term angel to identify the source of the inner voice of wisdom and guidance i intuitively receive. i do not intend to alienate anyone whose terminology may differ from my own. Please substitute your own word for this remarkable inner wisdom available to everyone but perhaps known by different names, or perhaps none at all.

on this plane. Your words have power. Ask for healing and it is given to you, however, it may come in a way you dont expect, but always comes as a part of a greater plan. Remain open to travel the road where it leads you. Be mindful that your guardian angels never leave their posts, as it were, and they keep an eye on you and on Divine Will for you. We see the path you walk and we guide you in making wise choices along the way. We never take control but may nudge you to change the course youre on to divert unnecessary disaster. Be open and listen! It is our wish to alleviate the pain humanity feels it must endure for lack of another alternative. Nourish your goal of being completely healed, whole, and filled with joy. Hear us knocking on your door and know that we stand by ready to serve. Simply be willing, reach to us, and we are there.Nancy Freier is an Essential Feng Shui consultant, angel communicator and spiritual adviser. But why do you take the fish oil? I doubt that you take it so you can consume more fat from fish. You take the oil, whether it is a gulp from a bottle or a handful of capsules, to get the omega-3 fatty acids (like EPA and DHA) into your body. For decades, the only choice we had was to either eat fatty fish or take fish oil, with varying levels of ability to digest and absorb these unique nutrients. What if you could take all-natural whole food omega-3 fatty acids from salmon without the oil? I have learned about a new, patented way to extract the omega 3 fatty acids from salmon without disturbing their delicate structure. This process yields the first new news in omega-3 fatty acid science in decades a highly absorbable EPA and DHA extract with 50 times the absorption of fish oils! acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) creates a supplement that is much closer to nature and how people were meant to absorb and use these nutrients. Because of this process, omega-3 fatty acids are retained on their natural sn-2 position, and are carried by phospholipids making them absolutely identical to the omega-3 fatty acids in the human brain. This perfect match allows the body to absorb and use the fatty acids much more efficiently. This is the way youd get your omega-3s by eating fish in the natural sn-2 position, not the sn-1 position into which they are twisted when extracted in fish oil. Researchers have found that the omega-3s naturally bound to these whole salmon phospholipids are up to 50 times better absorbed than fish oil. Normally, you have to get people to take a lot of fish oil just to see a benefit anywhere from 4 to 6 grams for results, and people have trouble adhering to a program of 10 to 12 (or more!) capsules a day. But with this new process, the recommended daily dose for healthy people is one tablet. It delivers bioidentical EPA and DHA bound to phospholipids for absorption that is far superior to fish oil, krill oil or squid oil.

European science

Its fairly well-known that most people dont get the omega-3s they need from their diets. To make up the difference, a lot of people try to get their omega-3s through fish oil. The benefits of omega-3s for heart disease, cancer, depression, inflammation, arthritis pain, and more make fish oil seem like a natural choice. But it isnt. While fish oil has been recommended for generations, it really isnt that natural. By the time the oil is bottled, it has been processed (you could say over-processed) so much that it bears little resemblance to the omega-3 fatty acids you would get from eating fish. This is something that has bothered me for some time, but luckily, theres a better way to get omega-3s in supplement form. Not long ago I discovered a better, safer, and more bioavailable source of omega-3 fatty acids. This supplement uses a new European breakthrough in omega-3 science that creates many advantages over the oil-form of omega-3s. This new process is the closest thing you can get to eating salmon (without eating salmon). Processing changes the natural structure

Bioidentical omega-3 fatty acids

Most fish oils are extracted from small, cold water fish, including: sardines, anchovies, herring, and other mixed fish. Then the fish undergo a lot of processing. The cooling and pressing steps, for example, bring the raw material close to boiling and coagulate the naturally-occurring proteins in the fish. This creates its own problems, as it requires large quantities of solvents (hexane and methanol to name two of them), and the need to reprocess the toxic waste that this method generates. But this heat method also changes the position of the fatty acids as well. Rather than being where nature intended them, on the sn-2 position on the carrier chain, the damaging heat-and-solvent method displaces the fatty acids to the sn-1 and sn-3 positions.1, 2 This might not sound like much, but if you think about it, small changes can be enormously important. These structural changes mean that the EPA and DHA are no longer bioidentical to those in the human body. Because the EPA and DHA in fish oils are carried by 20www.naturespathwayswi.com

triglycerides, rather than phospholipids, people need very large doses of fish oil to get good results usually several grams. Unfortunately, the problem with that approach is that fish oil doesnt sit well in many peoples stomachs. They experience gastric discomfort, bad aftertaste, and fish burps. Until recently, thats what everyone has had to deal with because thats the nature of fish oil supplements. The good news is that the oils delivered omega-3s that your body greatly needs; the bad news is that it takes a huge amount of oil to do it, and oils are very unstable and often quite rancid. Initially, absorption of phospholipid-bound omega-3 fatty acids from salmon was documented in a scientific report from the University of Nancy in France, which also incorporated data from an earlier 2004 study.3,4 The absorption levels of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil were compared to omega-3 fatty acids using this specialized process. The study used the gold standard, validated test of gastrointestinal absorption, called a CACO-2 study. What the researchers found was that these phospholipid-bound essential fatty acids were absorbed 5 times (or 500 percent) more than the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil. This five-fold increase in absorption is in itself quite respectable. Researchers then looked at the incorporation of these essential fatty acids in the calls and found a remarkable difference between fish oil and this specialized omega-3 bound to phospholipids (fish oil =
