    365.Tats the number o days in a year. Its also the number oopportunities you get to make a change, hopeully posi-tive. Whether its a personal goal youd like to accomplish,or someone elses lie you want to make better, each day youare given a choice: continue to do things the way youve beendoing them the previous 364 days. Or do something else.

    Jan. 1 is the day many o us make our New Years reso-lutions. Statistics vary, but most research indicates upwardso 50 percent o Americans make resolutions, many othem health-related. For many, its a mere three weeks laterthat most o those good intentions go by the wayside. Fastorward 24 months and youll nd 84 percent o those peoplehave allen o the resolution wagon.

    Im not in the habit o making New Years resolutions.Unless you really work your plan its usually a recipe orailure. And, really, i something is that important, why put

    it o until Jan. 1?Tat said, i you choose Jan. 1 as the big day, there are

    a number o things you can do to help ensure success. Oneis to write down your goals. Seeing something on paper is a

    visual reminder o what youre trying to do. You can reer toit as oen as youd like or reinorcement.

    Or, i you see the positive aspect to peer pressure, tellsomeone about your goals. A riend or amily member canhelp keep you accountable. And theres nothing like thecoworker you pass in the breakroom who says, Hows thediet going? to keep you on the straight and narrow.

    its the beginning o January and 2011 has nally come to anend. Most armers have harvested their last crops and preppedtheir elds or the coming harsh Wisconsin winter. Unlike the

    typical Wisconsin armer though, Growing Power, Inc. is neitherwinding down nor hibernating or the next several months. Inact, the sta at the historic urban arm in Milwaukee are actuallygearing up and prepping their multiple armsites or a busy winter season in which theygrow ood in up to 50 hoop-houses.

    O course, nothing comes easy: or the pastyear Growing Power stas worked tirelesslyto acquire land or the year-round growing.As a result, in 2011 alone, Growing Power

    constructed 25 hoop-houses and initiatedagricultural production on over 100 acresin and around Milwaukee. Te organizationhired 35 new employees and provided quality

    job-training to help manage this organi-zational growth andprovide opportunities orunemployed individualsin Milwaukee at the sametime.

    There are many areas in a persons lie that contribute towhether or not an individual is happy with themselvesand/or their lie. Identiying how you dene happiness or

    yoursel is the rst step to improving your health and happiness.I youre truly being honest with yoursel, most o us already knowwhat we want to change about ourselves or our lie, but simplydont act on it because something is holding us back. We all havewithin us an innate ability to listen i we choose to. Whether youchoose to or not will be the dierence to you living a lie thatsmore ullling. Te only way you can change your lie is by listen-ing to your inner sel and sorting out whats holding you back. Isit because its uncomortable or you to initiate change? Fear o theunknown or a past ailure? Negative sel-talk or low sel-esteem?You have to own why youre asking this question to begin with,as Im a rm believer in where the mind goes, the man ollows.

    Are you unhappy with yoursel, your appearance, how you eel,your health, nances, environment or your job? What is it? Is it

    one thing or 5 areas o your lie youre not excited about? Its criti-cal that you start by writing down the areas o your lie that yourenot pleased with, and whats causing you to eel like you could behappier so you can live a more ullled lie, thus greater heights ohappiness. An easy way to assess your current liestyle is by lookingat your current lie, how you live, eat, your job, your relationshipsand so orth. ake the time to evaluate what your ultimate lie wouldlook like i you allowed yoursel to just dream or a minute? ruly,its in dreaming we allow ourselves to explore the many possibilitieso change that will ulll us and allow our inner sel to have a voice.A great way to approach that is by simply writing out your wellness

    vision.Dening your ultimate wellness vision means dreaming big. I

    there was nothing that stood in your way, where would you be inthe next 3-5 years o your lie? Who would you surround your-sel with, where would you live, how would your nances be andwhat would you change about your lie today or an exceptionallyullled tomorrow? As a coach, behavior change is what I help youwork on. Our job is to help you identiy whats holding you back iyoure eeling you want to achieve new heights, or i youre happywith your lie and you simply want to continue down that path osuccess, what is the next step to make that a reality?

    For anyone to live a lie o complete ulllment, one needmake certain to assess all the elements in their lie that they eeessential or them to be completely happy. Assessing your lie mlooking at all areas o your lie that you need to tackle on a dayday basis, some o which could be amily, nances, work enviment, your job, your aith, sel-condence and so on. You nebe able to take each area and make a list o whats working orand what isnt. Its that simple. We reer to doing that as peelinonion to get to the root cause o why you may be eeling unllbegin with or how to stay on the right track and avoid past obcles. Most o us can identiy the obvious obstacles in our headsuntil you write them down and do some soul searching, you wont get to the root cause o your unhappiness. Tus you wonable to make change eectively in the areas o your lie whercritical or you to ulll your wellness vision.

Tink about it, etime you limit your thoughts to wanting more or yoursel much higher scale, we set ourselves up or disappointment, eless than, and the possibility o eeling stuck where you aryoure blaming someone else or your situation, a bad experior your upbringing or your lack o living your best lie, yostuck. Feeling limited and stuck is not living. Within each o a spirit that just wants to be set ree. When you put yoursela little box, living each day staying in your comort zone, we down the endless possibilities o expression expression o we truly are and who we want to become.

    Happiness truly does come rom within, not rom the extactors, I get that. Tere are no goals, accomplishments or drethat will make me happier than I allow mysel to be. Tis is its so important that you identiy with who you truly are or wto be. Within all o us is an amazing ability and potential, unand real just screaming to come out. When we dont listen toinner-sel, or give it a voice, lie becomes more o a challenge it has to be. Tink about it, living by everyone elses standardbecause its all you know or that you are amiliar with, you c

    the door to a lie that you so need and want. oo oen we put onblinders and ocus only on what others think is right or whatsacceptable, and we miss out on everything else lie has to oer.Terein lies the problem. Most people never get the gumption tomake a shi in their lives because its too risky, unamiliar or out otheir comort zone. Tey take a ew steps, possibly become earul,or simply do not want to put up the ght that it will take to bringyour lie to a whole new level. Most o us just give up.

    Te essence o beginning to live a lie o ulllment means allow-

    ing ourselves to expand upon the gis that weve been given andexploring a hidden talent or skill. Fulllment comes rom beingauthentically happy. Authentic happiness or me is dened as nevereeling content with what is every day. It means embracing the goodand looking or the lesson in the challenges we ace and not lettingnegative experiences or emotions rom our past ruin today or abetter tomorrow. With that comes having to be open to change andpossibly having to orgive others that have hurt us, so that you canmove toward a happier you.

    Its important or anyone to set goals or themselves. Dream-ing is a long-term goal that allows or you to start taking stepsnow to get closer to living a more ullled lie today. I nd writingextremely therapeutic. Its truly something I love to do. It bringsme a sense o calm and validates my eelings. Just writing downyour thoughts aer every day (or weekly to begin with), can bein and o itsel extremely therapeutic. Most people say they dontneed to write things down, but truly when you do its like you giveyour thoughts lie. rying to sort things out in your head daily

    just doesnt work. Our minds are too busy and scattered orto be eective or most people. Meditation is also a great whelp you ocus, whether its being alone with yoursel 15 mina day, taking a yoga or Pilates class, or simply taking a wasort through your thoughts. Allowing yoursel to just be o

    just be alone or 15 minutes a day can make all the dierencyou because getting regular exercise and eating healthy is keyhealthier you!

    So why not get on the road and reclaim your personal powe

    maybe discover it or the rst time! You just might nd that acknedging your inner voice and giving it lie will allow you to idewith who you truly are meant to be! Keep it simple. Either youcontinue to choose to be where you are now and eel unlled orchoose to change your lie, today, right now! Its always up to ywish you much joy and happiness and I can only hope that youchoose to share your positive energy with others that surroundeach any every day, or your lie is truly what you make o it whenmake the choices or yoursel that eel right.

    We all have our avorite pair oboots or shoes. Its taken us along time to break them in just

    right. Tey t so well and are so comort-able. No pinching, no blisters, no socksrubbing or bunching up. Its like going bare-oot. Winter arrives, the rst snow alls, outcomes our avorite ootwear and o we go.

    aking a hike in a winter wonderland

    is a great way to combat cabin ever, espe-cially i a light snow is alling. It is magical.Unortunately, our everyday winterwonderland usually involves salt-treatedconcrete in one orm or another. Going toand rom work sometimes becomes chal-lenging. Streets, sidewalks, parking lots atwork and parking lots at the mall are ullo snow that has been treated with salt.On warmer winter days, the snow meltsand we step in puddles o salt water. It

    penetrates our shoes and boots and leaveswhite stains. Our avorite ootwear ends up

    looking pretty bad. Te question is, shouldwe throw them away?

    An alternative to throwing them awayis de-salting. Its a great way to save ourwinter ootwear. Using a solution o hotwater and vinegar or a commercially-prepared desalting solution, brush thesolution into your boots or shoes. Te solu-tion neutralizes the salt. You can repeat thisprocess i needed. For severe cases o salt,wrap the ootwear in a white dish towel

    Conventional veterinarians andeven many holistic veterinariansare hesitant to recommend essen-

    tial oils or pets; however, when prepared,selected and utilized properly, they can bean eective and sae modality to preventand treat many conditions which aict ourdogs and cats.

    Sadly, many pet owners are lead tobelieve that it is necessary to apply amonthly spot-on pesticide to their pets coatto prevent eas and ticks rom biting thepet. Some o these products contain knowncarcinogens and others are suspected.Some cause itching and hair loss. Essen-tial oils such as cedarwood, lemongrass,

    peppermint and eucalyptus can provide aneective and healthy alternative, however,poorly distilled, adulterated or improperlyapplied oils can also cause some seriousproblems.

Yetblends o therapeutic grade oils containingmelaleuca have been used successully onmany pets when applied in small amounts orwhen diluted properly with a healthy vege-table oil such as olive or coconut oil.     care or animals that this time o year maypose threats to their urry riends, and suggestthe ollowing tips to avoid cold weather perilsand help keep their animals sae:

    Keep your animals inside. Even NorthernBreed dogs like Malamutes and ChowChows need heated, comortable shelteraway rom bitter cold temperatures andhigh winds to stay sae. Only take yourdogs outside long enough to relieve him/hersel and keep catsindoors at all times.

    I you see spilled antireeze, clean it up. Te sweet taste othis lethal poison actually attracts animals. Use more animal-riendly ormulations o products i possible, such as propyl-ene glycol instead o ethylene glycol.

    Always keep your dog leashed on snow and ice. Despite theirpowerul noses dogs oen lose their scent in the snow and ice,and can easily become lost.

    Never leave your companion animal alone in the car, espe-cially in cold weather. Te car can quickly become a rerigera-tor and your beloved animal can reeze to death.

Every human body is a tuning ork designed togive and receive the energy o sound. Having said that, it is impor-

    tant to choose music that ts your yoga practice.Here are some hints that may help you in choosing music or

    your own yoga or or your yoga class i you are a teacher.According to the Yoga Sutras o Patanjali, the objective o yoga is

    to calm the mind: yogah cittavtti nirodhah literally means Yogais the cessation o the uctuations o the mind.

    So, i the objective o yoga is to calm the mind remember this:Music can trigger memories and evoke emotions. More compli-cated music with a plethora o dissonant chords creates compli-cated thought processes. Te brain is always trying to gure thingsout, including music lines.     When you leave a job whether due to layo oror any reason you are

    out. Over time, many employeeshave accumulated substantial balances in these employer planswhich are designed or tax-advantaged retirement savings.

    For this reason, it is wise to understand the implications o eachoption. Some employers oer the opportunity to maintain yourretirement account at the company. On the other hand, by rollingover your unds to an IRA, you can maintain control, manage theunds any way you want, and remain subject to IRA rules alonerather than the limited investment selection and perhaps restric-tive distribution policies o your ormer employer. Note, however,that while you are permitted to take loans rom your 401(k) plan,this is not possible in an IRA, and depending on the investmentsused to und the IRA, charges and expenses could be higher orlower than those you would incur inside your 401(k) plan.
