October is an exhilarating month or all o our senses.Te colors, the tastes, the crisp air, the excitement it really getsme reminiscing about my childhood experiences rom this time oyear: carving pumpkins and roasting the seeds; sipping on momsold-ashioned hot cocoa; trick-or-treating during the golden age;raking leaves into jumping piles; watching Its the Great PumpkinCharlie Brown; and sleeping with the windows open just a bit buried under the newly applied winter quilt.

Its important to recognize that some o us dont have such goodmemories to draw upon, however. For those o us still dealingwith the eects o childhood trauma, October is the beginning oa three-month period notorious or being dicult to get through. It can also be a time when the unortunate symptoms o undiag-nosed depression issues pile on. I encourage any o you who arequestioning the status o your mental health to take advantage othe increased resources available this National Depression and

Our authors have some great articles to educate us about waysto take better care o ourselves and be more aware o our overallhealth. eresa Martens inorms us about the reiki principles andhow they can help us be present in the moment. T manstam mcal appoac oautommun sosAllopathic treatments o autoimmune diseases and other condi-tions that generate inammation, such as osteoarthritis, eczemaand rashes, are treated with creams or injections to suppress theimmune system. Tese immune-suppressing medications havebecome increasingly popular and come at a high price bothmonetarily and in side eects. Common side eects include theinability to fght acute inections and dormant viral inections,

bone loss, numbness and tingling, and diminished eyesight. Tesemedications can also damage the liver, heart and kidneys.

HUMIRA, a commonly prescribed medication or rheumatoidarthritis, costs insurance companies over $1,000 or a single monthlydose, with average costs o $15,000 per year per patient. Tese typeso medications are burdening our already broken health care system.

Abbotts June 6, 2012 Press Release, Abbott Announces 10-YearData Evaluating HUMIRA (Adalimumab) or Patients with Long-Standing Moderate-to-Severe Rheumatoid Arthritis, reports that:

78.6 percent o patients achieved at least 20 percent improve-ment in their symptoms.

55.5 percent achieved at least 50 percent improvement in theirsymptoms.

32.8 percent o patients achieved at least 70 percent improve-ment in their symptoms.

T olstc appoac o autommunsosNatural treatments or autoimmune conditions require a multi-aceted approach that addresses both immune system triggers andcalming down an overactive immune response.

Te three common triggers that overstimulate the immunesystem are:

STreSS: Stress reduction is best achieved with some combina-tion o meditation, exercise, coping skills, liestyle changes and

holistic therapies, including therapeutic-grade essential oils, massage, homeopathy, chiropractic and acupuncture.

lOw-grAde ChrONiC iNeCTiONS: Tese are oenoverlooked by allopathic medicine as normal, but they willconstantly trigger the overactive immune system. Holisticunctional medicine providers look at blood and stool testingto identiy and eradicate low-grade chronic inections.

OOd iNTOlerANCeS: Such intolerances are dierent thanood allergies in that they create inammation and malabsorp-tion o nutrients. Food intolerances can be identifed usingblood, stool or saliva testing, or elimination diets.

Aer the immune system triggers are reduced, the immune systemcan be balanced. Te easiest analogy to understand balancing theimmune system is a teeter-totter. Te center support o the teeter-totter is -helper-3 (T-3), which is responsible or returning theimmune system to a balanced and relaxed state aer an immuneresponse. -helper-1 (T-1) is one side o the teeter-totter, whichis the frst line o cellular deense that strongly attacks cold andu bugs, viruses and allergies. -helper-2 (T-2) is the other sideo the teeter-totter, which creates antibodies in the extracellularuids to attack anything that has been tagged with an antigen.

Michelle Buchanan, certied acupuncturist, is the owner o IsAcupuncture Center, LLC, 890 W. Wingra Drive in Madison, Wsin. Tey oer a variety o holistic therapies, including acupuntherapeutic massage, Chinese and Western herbs, unctional metherapeutic grade essential oils and consultations to meet the

care goals o their clients. Michelle also teaches classes or other health care pers. For more inormation, call 608.441.9355 or visit www.isthmusacupuncture

Rebalancing the immune system is best handled in three st1. First is to support T-3 with high-quality fsh oil, vitamin

and citrus essential oils by Young Living .2. Second is to identiy the overactive side o the teeter-totte

looking at herbs and spices known to supplement T-1 or Tand analyzing how they respond in the body, the over-responside can be identifed. One method is to see i the specifc or T-2 herbs and spices generate intolerances on blood or during elimination diets. Another method uses Japa

acupuncture diagnosing technique combined with therapegrade essential oils called Body-eedback with essential oils

    3. Tird is to support the weaker side o the teeter-totter, wnaturally pulls down the overactive side.

Autoimmune conditions require liestyle commitments to wness. Holistic therapies can reduce abnormal immune respoand a multiaceted approach is best. Some people can control symptoms entirely with holistic methods, while others can retheir pharmaceutical medications with holistic support. Haa team o health care providers that specialize in autoimmconditions is the key to success.

Not many people will openly discuss how their homes eelenergetically, or that they have areas in their homes thateel not quite right (e.g., their basement eels creepy to

them). Do you have children that or some reason will not play ina certain room, or does your cat/dog look past you as i staring atsomething behind you? I, like many others, have had eelings ouneasiness in a home right away upon entering it or even eel likethere is something there. Just sensing these negative energies cancreate discomort, but or one to openly discuss this with someonecan be even more uncomortable. You can easily imagine how one

could have worries or ears o what others may think, especially iyou eel you may be imagining it yoursel. Well let me tell you romexperience, you are not!

We do tend to think o our homes as places that have walls, oors and roos, which include rooms that contain our personalitems. Te subtle energy o our homeis aected by what we bring home with us aer a long day at work,as we do shed the stress once we are home, or by the atmosphereand moods o people who are now living there or who have previ-ously lived in the home. Now take a moment and think o a time inyour lie when you have had a very negative person in your home,or discovered that the previous owners o the home argued a lotand are now divorced. iremember the frst year I started practicing chiropractic. Iwas situated in a small city and took care o a lot o peoplethat drove in rom rural communities. Tere was one man in

particular that I will always remember. He walked into my oceone day complaining o excruciating pain throughout his wholeback. Every spot along his back was so painul that the only thinghe could do to get through the day was take narcotics. Review-ing his history, he told me he was a armer and a ather with twobeautiul children. He was suering and his pain was aectingeverything in his lie: work, sleep and, most importantly, how heinteracted and played with his children.

Unortunately, I never had a chance to help him. It was only oneshort day later that he was gone, leaving his two beautiul childrenwithout a ather. He had lymphatic cancer that had aggressivelyravaged his whole body. Can you imagine, one day living, playingwith your kids and the next day youre gone? All I know is that

cancer touches our lives, whether it is ourselves or through a lovedone or someone we know. Every time the same questions press onme: Could anything have been done dierently? I there was onething that a person could do dierently, would they live?

In my many years o practice and helping people get well whether they had cancer or they wanted to live their best lives there were always key things that I would recommend or them. Here is a simple way to maximize youre vitality; its called theRAINBOW liestyle.

reST:It is very important to get your sleep. Many people inour society are stressed and sleep deprived. Eventually, chroniclack o sleep can and will lead to health disturbances. A verycommon ailment associated with sleep deprivation is adrenalatigue, which can lead to a whole host o issues. Rest is impor-tant and I recommend 6-8 hours per night.

ATTiTUde: Focus on what you can do something about.Everything relies on our perception o an event and ourresponse to it. Te universe is balanced, and i you can seek thebalance in it and oster it with orgiveness and gratitude, youwill experience less stress.

iNTAKe O NUTrieNTS/dieT: Getting adequate nutrientsor your body is essential. Tis means ensuring that your body

is digesting ood properly so that you are utilizing your nents or energy, growth and repair. In the case o cancer, cacells love sugar; it provides them with an acidic environmwhich encourages rapid growth. It is important to incorpoa diet with many resh vegetables. Equally important isyou are also experiencing proper elimination. Autointotion (toxicity o the bowel) can lead to a whole host o ailmin the body, not just discomort.

NiKe: No, you dont need to wear Nike shoes. However, you need is movement. Movement IS lie! We oen orgetmovement is a vital nutrient or the body just like wateoxygen is or us. Movement stimulates the circulation o nents within our cells. I encourage everyone to walk 10 minper day, at the very least.

belieS: What are your expectations o things to be? Lbeautiul! When you walk into a room, do you light it up w

you enter or when you leave? I its the latter, then ask youhow you can experience more joy. Embracing a belie syo happiness and vitality will encourage optimal health. Cout the video o positive psychology called Te Happy Sto Better Work by Shaun Achor on ED.com.

OXygeN: Yes, breathe! Oxygen is a key nutrient or the unco our bodies. In this stressed out world, we are breathingShort and shallow breathing is oxygen-depleting and very aor the body. Healthy, well-oxygenated cells are cancer resistathe least and cancer proo at the best. We want to ocus on exsive, deep meaningul breaths to nourish our tissues.

wATer: Lie is about hydration. Every process in the brequires a hydrogen or oxygen molecule hence water (H

Any disease that aects the heart or lungs can cause panting.High blood pressure, congestive heart ailure, pneumonia, tracheal collapse, lung cancer or laryngeal paralysis can bepossibilities.

Another very common cause o panting is too much body at.Being overweight increases the work o breathing, plus acts as aninsulator, keeping the body temperature elevated aer exercise. Iyou cant easily eel your dogs ribs, then it is time to cut back onportion size, cut out treats and increase the exercise!

Since excessive panting can be due to many treatable causes,be sure to discuss concerns about your dogs panting with your

veterinarian. Comprehensive blood work should be done to lookor endocrine diseases, chest X-rays should be done to look orheart or lung problems, and medications can be tried to helpwith anxiety or pain. Bottom line: Your dogs panting is trying totell you something!

wat s acupunctu?Acupuncture is the most well-known parto raditional Chinese Medicine (CM)that involves inserting thin sterile needlesat specifc points on the body. CM isbased on thousands o years o observationo natural phenomena, both in the exter-

nal environment and within the body. ounderstand acupuncture, you must frstunderstand CM. Here are a ew key prin-ciples to help you understand CM:

Qi: All living things are powered by alie orce energy known as qi (ch). Manyinterpret qi as a vague concept, but it isactually a concise way to describe all o theenergetic processes and exchanges that takeplace in the body. For example, in CM, daqi is the energy we take in rom the air webreathe, and gu qi is the energy we take inrom the ood we eat. Te body convertsda qi and gu qi into the raw materials weneed to make new cells in the body and theenergy we need to perorm daily unctions.

MeridiANS: Qi ows in predictablepatterns within the body. Just as the bloodwithin our bodies ollows a predictablepath through our circulatory system, theqi in our body ows along predictable andcontinuous pathways called meridians.

Tese meridians connect each part o thebody to every other part o the body, includ-ing the mind and the spirit. Tis intercon-nection means that no one part o the bodycan be isolated rom the body as a whole.

    CAUSeS O diSeASe/SyMPTOMS:

Certain actors, such as stress, overwork,

inappropriate diet, trauma or injury, cancause qi to become blocked anywherealong the meridians. Tese blockages actlike dams on a river, stopping the owdownstream (defciency) while causinga backup in ow upstream (excess). Inother words, they cause imbalances in thenormal ow o qi that, due to the intercon-nected nature o the system, can cause animbalance in the body as a whole. Physicalsigns and symptoms are the maniestationo these imbalances.

diAgNOSiS: A practitioner o CMmust evaluate the patients collection osymptoms to identiy his or her patterno imbalance. Using various diagnostictools, including a detailed health history, examination o the pulse and tongue, andpalpation o the meridians, the CM prac-titioner reaches a dierential diagnosis thatdescribes the individual patients conditionand helps guide the treatment plan.

TreATMeNT: Based on the dential diagnosis, the CM practitiwill develop a customized treatment designed to correct the patients speimbalance. Acupuncture, which helpsblockages in qi, is one o the best wayrestore normal qi ow within the b

Te leo the course o treatment is oen reto duration o the symptoms (i.e.,longer youve been experiencing trothe longer it may take to correct the imance), but each person responds dierto acupuncture.

days. Tere is no bad news with biorhythm, only inormation.

Te frst 11.5 days o the physicalbiorhythm cycle are considered to be thepositive hal. During this high period,we give o energy with a prodigality thatpeaks around the sixth day rom the starto the cycle. At this point we are the stron-gest, can work out the hardest and have

more endurance than during the rest o thecycle. We are also more resistant to disease, better coordinated and generally in betterphysical condition.

During the second 11.5 days o thephysical cycle, sometimes called the nega-tive hal, the body recharges while energyaccumulates. Naturally, we tire moreeasily, need more rest and fnd it hard totrain vigorously. During this period, we aremore likely to experience a physical slump, since we are weaker and more vulner-able to disease. Te body begins gatheringstrength or a return to the high side othe cycle. I we are in good physical condi-tion, no mishaps or illnesses should occur we will merely experience a simplereduction in physical potential. It is onlyduring the critical days o the cycle, whenthe rhythm is changing rom positive tonegative or vice versa, that the physicalrhythm becomes so erratic and unsta-ble that extra caution becomes a neces-sity. It should be very obvious that i youare training and/or competing, it is very

important to become aware o your 23-dayphysical biorhythm.

Te 28-day sensitivity (emotional) cyclecontrols the nervous system and aectsdisposition, mood and coordination.During the frst 14 days, the positive phase,we are inclined to react in positive andconstructive ways to most events. Sincewe get along better with others and withourselves during this phase, this frst halo the sensitivity cycle proves to be the besttime or undertaking projects requiringcooperation, a positive attitude and creativ-ity. Tis period is great or socializing.

Because the emotional cycle is a poweruland pervasive one, it can modiy both thephysical and the intellectual cycles morethan you might expect. In a period o phys-ical decline combined with an emotionalpeak, even training or athletic peror-mance may be up to par, simply because othe very positive attitude generated during

the apex o the emotional phase. Tis isparticularly true in mind sports, suchas powerliing, bodybuilding or running, where concentration and determinationare extraordinarily important.

Te strengths o the sensitivity rhythmsinuence are also apparent in intellectualand creative endeavors. It is reasonableto think that during the negative part o

the intellectual cycle, it will be dicult toachieve any major insights or to produceespecially viable ideas. However, i thatsame period is one o an emotional high, the ideas and insights may ow in a virtualtidal wave. Interestingly, the sensitivityrhythm is the easiest o the three to track, since each o us is usually a good judgeo his or her own eelings. Even skepticsabout biorhythm admit to an awareness oregular uctuations in their emotions.

In its 14-day negative phase, theemotional rhythm can result in verydangerous results, since eelings aect

judgment. Te days during which werecharge our emotional powers are poorones or perorming dangerous jobs. Criti-cal sensitivity days carry much more dangerthan the days o the negative phase. Teyleave us open to sel-inicted harm. Anemotionally critical day, particularly whenit is combined with a critical day in eitherthe physical or intellectual cycle, defnitelycalls or taking all available precautions.

    Te fnal phase, the intellectual/mental

cycle, originates in the brain and takes 33days to complete. It aects intelligence, reasoning and comprehension powers. Tefrst 16.5 days, or the positive phase, is agood time or sel-improvement throughreading and education, since our minds aremore open, retentive and our understand-ing is at its best. On the other hand, duringthe negative, or low phase, most o us fndit harder to concentrate or think thingsthrough with maximum clarity.

When we are in the center o a biorhythmcycle, be it up or down, we undergo a spinperiod, a phase that may be just as seriousas a critical period.

Te relative strength o the physical, emotional and intellectual biorhythms

varies among individuals. It is oolish togeneralize about which rhythms in whichphases will dominate other rhythms andphases, and this problem complicatesthe question o interpreting mixed days.

Heredity and talent help explain tdierences.

A natural bodybuilder (i.e., one has inherited great genetics and phystrength) places much more emphasithe physical cycle than other bodybers, and in the case o the proessicompetitor, this emphasis is even stroWhat we are as a result o inherited cha

You may want to include a soothing activity in your routinethat does not include eating or nursing: singing, massage, stroking (ull to intermittent), white noise. I they wake in the night, comort them minimally but makeit boring or your children. Avoid eeding them, playing withthem and staring lovingly into their eyes at night. Parentswho are good sleepers fnd this easier than most, since theyare tuned out to most stimuli themselves, thereore setting agreat, dull example or their children.

Nutrition aects sleep. Avoid caeine, sugary oods and oodadditives. Balance your childs meals with protein, healthyats, slow carbohydrates, vegetables and ruit, and you willenhance sleep by balancing their blood sugar levels.

According to sleep expert racy Hogg, there is a simple ormulathat parents can use to help their children develop good sleeppatterns early on.4 Te acronym or this method spells the wordEASY, but the author notes that it is not easy or parents to do, just

simple to remember. It reers to the preerred order o events thatlead up to sleep or children. E i or eating, A is or activity, S is orsleep and Y is or you. Yes, having some time or yoursel is cruciali you are to be the best parent you can be. I think the authors pointis that although nursing or bottle eeding babies to sleep worksand is a wonderul experience, it does not work to develop the bestsleeping patterns. Te experts all agree, however, that getting sleepis always preerred over no sleep at all, so although some methodsare better than others, any eorts you make to value sleep in yourhousehold are sure to beneft your amily greatly.

The probability is very strong that a person willhave a subpar day and be more subject to injury on those days. The peaks and valleys o each cycle are called mini-critical daAlthough some difculty may be experienced on these days, theare not as potentially difcult as critical days. is based on biorhythm. From airline pilots to bus drivers, wor

are alerted to their critical times, and accident rates have reduced tremendously, more than 60 percent according to sstudies. Many other studies involving human error have conducted, and the results show an amazing correlationsaety and awareness o biorhythms.

With all o the persuasive evidence avoring the ecacbiorhythm awareness, it is surprising that the theory is not more oen in the felds o industrial saety, trac control, mcine and athletics. When it is used, the statistics are not mpublic. Perhaps the reason biorhythm has yet to be applieextensively in the United States as it is in Switzerland and Jis because such studies are complicated and costly.

Whatever the case, it is always important to keep an omind and improve in every way possible. Biorhythms just give you that extra edge!

One only has to walk down any grocery meat aisle and readthe labels to become conused. Phrases that stand out are:grass-ed, grain-ed, natural, naturally raised, pasture raised

and AGA certifed grassed. What is their signifcance and value?

Even some so-called experts dont get it right. According to MaNoble, communications director or the American Grassed Asstion, a James Beard Award-winning che reerred to the meserves as some grassed and some grassed and grain-fnished.is totally incorrect. Noble makes a point that many ches and writers are oen conused over what grassed bee really is.1

system with strict standards to insure the animal has eaten nothingbut grass rom weaning to harvest, has not been confned and hasnever been given antibiotics or hormones. AGA-certifed grassedalso means that the meat is produced in the United States rombee cattle and other ruminants born and raised in this country.

ga fh Tis term has no legal meaning and is a sel-made marketing claim. I an animal is grassed, it is, by defni-tion, grass fnished, so theres no need to claim grassed and grassfnished. Te term by itsel on a label can mean anything, so its upto the consumer to ask questions o the producer or seller.

naua Tis USDA term applies to the fnished product andmeans that it contains no artifcial ingredients or added color, andis only minimally processed. Minimal processing means that theproduct was processed in a manner that does not undamentallyalter the product. Te label must include a statement explainingthe meaning o the term natural (such as no artifcial ingredients;minimally processed). Te term has nothing to do with how theanimal was raised or ed.

nauay-a Tis is another USDA term with legal stand-ing. It means that the animal has never been ed animal byproducts,

growth hormones or antibiotics. Te eed could be grain or grass, and the animal could be confned to a eedlot or a portion o its lie.

oac Te USDA certifes organic production standards, whichrequire that the livestock was raised without antibiotics or synthetichormones, and on eed that was vegetarian, and pesticide- and herbi-cide-ree, and that contained no GMOs. Organic does not equal grass-ed. A ranch with organic certifcation may eed its herd entirely ongrass, but many also eed organic grains and grain by-products duringperiods o confnement. Conversely, many grassed producers choosenot to pursue organic certifcation, even though they ollow organicstandards in the production o their meats. With this label, the bestthing to do is ask the armer or research more about the brand.

Pau a You may encounter this term in articles that use it asa general term or any animal that never sees confnement; however, when you see it on a label, its another sel-made claim with no legaldefnition or independent verifcation o production standards. Tisis another case in which you should ask plenty o questions.

For more inormation, the August 2013 issue o Consumer Reportsdiscusses what ood labels to look or and those to ignore. Te ewgood labels/logos, according to this article, are: USDA organic,Animal Welare Approved and American Grassed (Ameri-can Grassed Association).
