National Centers for Environmental Prediction: COPC Data Distribution Systems – IDP & NWSTG
Michelle MainelliDeputy Director, NCEP Central OperationsNOAA/National Weather ServiceCOPC meeting4-5 November 2015
NCO’s New Organizational Structure
What does this mean for COPC? The realignment of our Organizations and IT infrastructure will better serve the needs of our partners
• On April 1, 2015, NCO and the TOC operations and staff merged as part of NWS HQ Reorg
• NCO Director became system owner of OPSnet and NWSTG systems
• All NWS network services, support, and maintenance centralized with reorganization
• On October 4, 2015, NCO was approved to add two new branches

NWSTG Overview• NWSTG is a weather hub (24x7) for collection and distribution of weather data
• Current legacy NWSTG status:– Limited backup capability: 74% backup operational capability– Limited capacity and infrastructure: Inadequate capacity to accommodate projected increases of
satellite, model and radar data
• NOAA’s Integrated Dissemination Program (IDP) NWSTG Re-architecture Project is providing:
– 100% backup capability – Accommodate for projected increases in satellite (e.g., GOES-R) model and radar data – Leverage IDP dissemination infrastructure at College Park, MD and Boulder, CO
• Re-architecture will encompass fundamental changes to:– Hardware, software and network infrastructure equipment
• All NWSTG existing functions will be transitioned with minimal impact to NWS and DoD customers by FY 2017

COPC Impacts• Summary of the implementation schedule:
– NCO has separated each NWSTG application into its own project– The IDP System in Boulder will be operation by FY16Q2 with complete
integration / activation of all College Park IDP applications by FY16Q4– All applications will be migrated to IDP no later than FY17Q1
• Impacts to the COPC partners:– NWS eMail Data Input System (EDIS) – allows met. data providers the
capability to input weather bulletins to NWSTG via email.• One of the projects to migrate to IDP system• Due to security-related issues, NCO had to terminate the web entry service a couple
weeks ago• Customers who use the email input and ftpmail service will be migrated to other services
by FY16Q4
• Benefits– Full redundancy, support, larger networks, more data & cross-trained staff
