The Perfect Crime One victim, no perpetrator, and no motivation behind

the crime.

In 2005, An elderly man aged 80 years old was found dead in his own home. No injuries were found on the body, and no signs of trespassing or murder were present. Thus, the investigation concluded that the death was an incident that commonly occurs with the elderly, which is chronic illness. A few days later, another body was found dead in the public park. The victim is a female aged 60, with a 2.5 – 3 cm wound on the right side of her head. This incident is still a mystery and has not yet been resolved, mainly due to the lack of witnesses and motivation for the cause of death. Later, 19 more bodies were found in a span of a single month. All of the incidents of these deaths all occurred between 12 – 4 pm, which made people believe that there is a serial killer targeting the elderly aged 70 years and above who lives alone. 3 months later, a body was found floating along the river in New Orleans. Along that time, 67 people were found dead in a single day. These deaths were so depressing to handle to the point that it led 2 police officers who were responsible for the case, who dealt with handling the deaths which happened every day, to commit suicide. This further caused hundreds of people to become disheartened and hopeless. These certain cases of death happened all over the world, causing the population to fear death even more. Many events happened in 2005. Earth became warmer, in which that period was recorded as having the highest temperature in human history. Between 12 – 4 pm, the time during which the elderly passed away the most, is a period with extremely high heatwaves. When the temperature of the Atlantic Ocean increased, hurricane ‘Katrina’ formed in the Lantin America region, causing floods and landslides that resulted in unprecedented damage to cities.

“These are deaths and crime that we all acknowledge, but we cannot claim responsibility from anyone. The changes in temperature all over the world can perhaps be called a new form of the

perfect crime.” – Christopher Flavin, Worldwatch Institute –

13. An experiment was conducted to find the

effect that pollution have towards the

germination of seeds. Which of these is not

one of the procedures and experiment results?

1 Add diluted sulfuric acid solution to a petri

dish, then add water to another petri dish.

2 Place a piece of filter paper onto the petri

dish, then put in the seeds in different

quantities.

3 Close the lid of the petri dish, then keep it

at a warm area.

4 Count the number of germinated seeds in

both the two petri dishes at the same time

every day for a week.

5 Most of the seeds cannot germinate in the

petri dish containing sulfuric acid, but most

of the seeds can germinate in the petri dish

containing water.

14. The following information are the procedures

and time needed to completely digest food

inside our bodies.

When we eat food, after the food have entered our

mouths, they will be chewed using our teeth and

become mixed with saliva from our tongues. After

that, the food goes through the esophagus and

directly towards our stomach. The stomach has the

characteristic of a large muscle bag where food will

be mixed with digestive juices produced by the

stomach through contractions.

During this process, carbohydrates from food such as

rice or bread will be sent from the stomach to the

small intestine using around 3 hours. Food with fat as

a component will be sent to the small intestine using

around 6 hours. Food that enters the small intestine

will dissolve into nutrients with small molecules, then

absorbed into the small intestines using around 4 – 5

hours.

Food waste (fibers) left from the small intestine will

then be sent to the large intestine. The large intestine

is responsible for sucking up the moisture from the

food waste. After this, the food waste is driven out of

the body in the form of excrement (feces). The time

spent before reaching the final stage differs slightly

depending on the food eaten, but it usually requires

around 9 – 15 hours.

The consideration of time spent digesting food in our

bodies are used for scientific examinations. The

consideration of digestive conditions left in the

human stomach or intestines (victim) of murder or

accidents can help in the determination of when the

victim passed away, the food

eaten before death, or time

passed after death.

Which of these correctly describes the use of

digestion in scientific investigations?

1 Digestion of food within our bodies takes

approximately around 6 hours.

2 There are only 2 organs that are involved in

the digestion of food within our bodies, so

they can easily be used for fact checking

and bodily examinations.

3 The investigation to find out what foods

were eaten a few hours before someone

passed away is not important in the process

of investigating the truth behind incidents of

death.

4 If there any bread or rice that cannot be

digested left in the stomach, it means that

the person died not less than 5 hours after

eating those bread or rice.

5 Due to the fact that time spent on digestion

within the body varies according to

nutrients involved, if we know the level in

which carbohydrates and fat were digested,

we will be able to predict the time when

the victim died.

15. The following information is about environmental

hormones, also known as endocrine disruptors.

Which of these correctly analyzes and predicts

the above information according to the logical

reasoning?

1 Environmental hormones are included in

pesticides.

2 Environmental hormones are naturally

occurring.

3 Environmental hormones act similar to normal

hormones in the body.

4 When environmental hormones enter the

body of a living organisms, it cannot be easily

expelled.

5 Environmental hormones interfere with

women’s menstrual cycle and the creation of

female reproductive cells.

[Specific properties of environmental hormones]

Environmental hormones are groups of chemicals

that live in the environment around us. Once it

enters our bodies, It will mimic reactions the same

way as hormones.

[Example of damage caused by environmental

hormones]

Bald eagles exposed to pesticides have a

decreased rate of eggs incubation.

have occurred in many countries. The image is

the damage from the flood that occurred in an

old city of one certain country.

Which of these methods can reduce the damage

from flooding when planning a new city layout?

1 Increase drainage facilities.

2 Limit the number of floors of buildings.

3 Build an artificial lake in the city.

4 Reserve sufficient green space for the city.

5 Build smooth roads using asphalt and cement.

[Information 1]

Normally, the amount of rainfall in the desert in 1

year is usually no more than 250 milliliters. This is a

phenomenon in the desert that humans discovered,

as people would believe that floods cannot occur

in the desert. Flooding occurs in areas with heavy

rain and becomes severe during specific seasons.

Korea has heavy rain in the summer, and the reason

why the country possesses many dams is because

of the frequent floods.

[Information 2]

Cherrapunji, an area located to the northeast of

India, is an area with average rainfall of 11,430

milliliters per year, which is the highest rate of

rainfall in the world. Due to many places in the

world lacking in water, this might be seen as a good

thing for Cherrapunji in times of crisis. However, this

is not the case. In 1 year, Cherrapunji went through

26,000 millimeters of rain which is more severe

during the summer. Cherrapunji does not have any

facilities that can store water or allow water to drain

quickly into the sea. Therefore, the area often had

to deal with large floods during the summer.

[Information 3]
