Jayne Christakos Bio & Application (continued)

Please provide biographical information and any position statement you wish to make. This statement will be published in the CASBO publication in conjunction with balloting. Please limit your response to 200 words.

I am the associate superintendent of business, facilities and operations for the San Bernardino City Unified School District, where I provide leadership for the overall business services of the district, which has an enrollment of 53,000. I began my career in education in 1997 as an accounting technician and budget manager for alternative education at the Riverside County Office of Education. Prior to joining San Bernardino City Unified, I served as assistant superintendent of business services in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (enrollment 26,000) and as director of fiscal services and assistant superintendent of business services in the San Jacinto Unified School District (enrollment 9,000). I have been a longtime member leader with CASBO, and I have over 25 years of leadership and management experience with a collaborative style which motivates people to make an organization successful. I strive daily to grow the skill and knowledge of my team and improve systems to provide outstanding customer satisfaction to my district’s stakeholders. I am passionate about aligning resources to support my district’s goals to prepare students for success today and college and career in the future!

Briefly describe why you want to be a member of the CASBO Board of Directors.

I have benefited both professionally and personally from CASBO, and I want to give back by continuing to support members of the CASBO Eastern Section at the state level and contribute to CASBO’s future success!

If elected as CASBO’s Eastern Section State Director, how would you support the implementation of CASBO by Design 2.0?

If elected, I would support CASBO by Design 2.0 by constantly communicating the various components of the plan, including its mission, vision and belief statements and its parameters, objectives and strategies; and by reinforcing how our collective work supports both the growth of CASBO and of our subscriber organizations. I would also share CASBO by Design 2.0 updates at every section meeting. For example, a great way to start a section meeting would be to engage section leaders by inviting them to share strategies for building their own district staff capacity through professional development and how those efforts tie into CASBO by Design 2.0.

How would you work with the Eastern Section Board of Directors to increase member participation?

Under the new membership structure, it has never been easier to support and provide access for professional growth to our employees. San Bernardino City Unified is active in CASBO, and our goal is to more than double our membership in the coming year. I would encourage the Eastern Section Board of Directors to increase membership from within their own districts, as well as develop strategies to reach out to other districts within the Eastern Section to encourage more of their employees to join CASBO.

JAYNE CHRISTAKOS CREDITS CASBO WITH HELPING HER overcome a fear of public speaking.

A member for two decades, she was servingon a CASBO research and development com-mittee years ago and recalls, “We always shared our project in a fun way by performing skits that included music and dancing. Be-tween CASBO and Toastmasters, I am able to engage in public speaking without the anxiety I used to feel. I would not be a CBO today without this very important skill.”

In her current position as chief business officer at San Bernardino City Unified School District, Christakos works closely with Superinten-dent Dale Marsden’s cabinet to achieve the district’s goals.

“I am responsible for budget, accounting, purchasing, risk management, employee benefits, technology, nutrition services, facili-ties planning and development, maintenance and operations, transportation and energy management. We have so many opportuni-

ties every day in San Bernardino to make a difference for over 50,000 students.”

Christakos says what she loves about her job is the opportunity to work with some of the most inspiring and outstanding leaders she has ever encountered in her career.

“I believe in coaching and mentoringindividuals and teams so they can be thebest. We’re all so fortunate to be a part of school business. We provide the support needed so teachers and site administrators can focus on the most important thing…the student in the classroom.”

Although her position keeps her very busy, Christakos has also made time to be involved in CASBO. She’s a member of the CBO Pro-fessional Council and is serving in her second year as chair of the Legislative Committee.

“CASBO has done great work in this area and deserves a lot of kudos for its involvement in advocating for policy in the areas of school business and finance,” says Christakos.

“Some of the benefits I derive from being involved on this committee are sharing the impact decisions will have on my district,as well as all districts. It’s fun to delve deepinto education bills and research the impactto public agencies.”

Originally from Beaumont, California,Christakos received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California State University, San Bernardino, followed by a Master of Arts in Management from the University of Redlands. In 2008, she earned her CBO Certification from the Fiscal Crisis & Management Assistance Team and CASBO.

“We’re in a fast-changing world and wehave to run to keep up and provide the best systematic support for our students,” she stresses. “I can’t emphasize enough the value of serving on professional councils or other CASBO committees. The best thing you canall do as leaders is to develop your staff. CASBO is an outstanding resource that will grow and develop your team!” z z z
